Tips and Trends

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Mets

Rays: The Rays are 6-0 in their past six Saturday games. Tampa Bay, though, historically struggles away from Tropicana Field. The Rays have lost 22 of 36 away from home this season. They are 2-10 in their last 12 road matchups. James Shields is Tampa Bay’s No. 1 starter, but he’s usually far less effective away from home. Shields is 13-19 with a 4.73 ERA in 47 career road starts. Tampa Bay is 6-21 in Shields’ last 27 road starts as an away underdog. Shields is 1-3 on the road this season with a 4.15 ERA, compared to a home mark of 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA. This is Shields’ first away start since May 24 when he allowed four earned runs on 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings against Florida in a 5-4 loss where he didn’t factor in the decision. Shields has never faced the Mets before.

The Under has cashed 12 of the past 14 times in Shields’ last 14 starts as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Akinori Iwamura (knee) and Troy Percival (shoulder) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-$1.25, O/U 7.5 over -$1.20): The Mets are 11-3 in Johan Santana’s last 14 home starts. Santana, however, is coming off the worst start of his career. Santana was battered for a career-worst nine earned runs in three innings against the Yankees on Sunday in a 15-0 loss. The lefty with the great change-up, opened the season in high style going 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA in his first seven starts. But during his past six starts, Santana has a 6.50 ERA. The Mets are 19-7 (73 percent) in Santana’s past 26 starts. The Mets are playing well at their new Citi Field, winning 13 of their last 18 home contests. The Mets are 7-1 in their last eight games as a home favorite. The Mets have been winning despite missing the power-hitting of injured first baseman Carlos Delgado and the all-around play of star shortstop Jose Reyes, out with a calf injury.

The Under is 11-4-1 in the Mets’ last 15 home games versus a team with a losing road record.

Key Injuries - Carlos Delgado (hip), Jose Reyes (calf) and J.J. Putz (elbow) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

New York Yankees at Florida Marlins

Yankees (-$1.10, O/U 8): Yankees manager Joe Girardi is familiar with the Marlins and National League baseball having managed the Marlins three years ago. Yankees starting pitcher A.J. Burnett also knows the Marlins well, having spent seven seasons with them. Burnett was brilliant in his last start, tossing seven shutout innings on Sunday while allowing four hits and striking out eight in a 15-0 thrashing of the Mets. The right-hander is 14-6 with a 3.19 ERA in 28 interleague starts. Star shortstop Derek Jeter returned to New York’s lineup on Friday after not starting the previous two games because of a sore ankle. Alex Rodriguez won’t be in the Yankees’ lineup. He’s benched for the second of two games for what the Yankees are calling fatigue. Rodriguez’s is batting just .145 this month and is hitless in his last 15 at bats. The Yankees have won 21 of their last 31 games when favored.

The Under is 7-1-1 in New York’s last nine games versus a right-handed starter.
The Under is 8-2-1 in the Yankees’ past 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Marlins: Josh Johnson has won his past three decisions. The 25-year-old right-hander has a 3.11 ERA in his last five starts, all Florida victories. The Marlins are 11-3 in Johnson’s 14 starts this season. Florida is 22-6 in Johnson’s past 28 starts. Johnson threw a complete-game seven-hitter in his last start on Sunday, beating Toronto on the road, 11-3. It was Johnson’s sixth consecutive quality start. Florida is 9-2 in Johnson’s 11 home starts. This is Johnson’s first start versus the Yankees. The Marlins entered this series with the second-highest team batting average in June at .289. Only the Angels ranked higher. However, two of their key batters are in slumps. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida is hitless in his last 16 at-bats, while cleanup hitter Jorge Cantu has just one homer in his last 39 games. The Marlins are 2-9 in their last 11 games as a home underdog.

The Over is 21-6-5 in Florida’s last 32 interleague contests.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)
