The Highs and Lows of things

by Charles Jay
Which pitchers have produced the most profit, based on $100 plays and what prices were available on their games?

Rookie Matt Palmer of the Los Angeles Angels (-130 to win the AL West at BetUS) is the pitcher who has "gotten the money" the best. Los Angeles was 8-2 in his first ten starts and that was good for a positive gain of $930.

The big right-hander, Josh Johnson of the Florida Marlins (+850 to win the NL East at BetUS) has made 15 starts, with his team winning twelve of them, for a net gain of $889. The Boston Red Sox (-140 to win the AL East at BetUS) are 11-3 in knuckleball specialist Tim Wakefield's 14 starts, and they are up $798 in those games. Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants (+1600 in the NL West at BetUS) is one of the favorites to win the Cy Young Award, and he has been bringing home the bacon for his team, up $719 on an 11-3 team mark.

Other rookies aside from Palmer are doing well. Jeff Niemann of Tampa Bay (+900 to win the AL East at BetUS) has made 14 starts, of which the Rays have won ten, for a profit of $660. Josh Outman of the Oakland Athletics (+2500 in the AL West at BetUS) has been in 67% winning efforts, with $526 profit, and Rick Porcello of the Detroit Tigers (-175 to win the AL Central at BetUS) has gone to the mound 13 times, with the Tigers winning nine, and that has produced $484.

The big losers? Remembering that this is a function of price, last year's American League Cy Young winner, Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians (+1400 in the AL Central at BetUS), is a big looser considering the team is 5-10 in his starts with a net loss of $638. Chien-Ming Wang of the New York Yankees (+140 in the AL East at BetUS) has been a disaster, as the Bombers have won one of his six starts, with a net loss of #684. His teammate C.C. Sabathia, who has been a favorite plenty, has been an even worse value with a net loss of $737 on his team's record of 7-8 in his outings.

The worst is Manny Parra of the Milwaukee Brewers (+275 to win the NL Central at BetUS), whose team is 3-10 and down $870 as a result of his efforts.

As far as totals are concerned, the biggest "over" pitcher has been Scott Kazmir of the Tampa Bay Rays. He has made nine starts, and all nine have gone over the total, with an average run count of 13.3 per game. Of course, a 1.95 WHIP ratio tends to contribute to that. Kazmir is currently on the disabled list, having last started on May 20. He has done rehab stints in the minors and on Monday he allowed just a single run in six innings at Triple-A Durham. He may be back in the Rays' dugout by the end of this week or at some point next week.

Interestingly, Roy Halladay, who was a leading Cy Young candidate before going on the DL himself, has been associated with a lot of "overs." Halladay's 14 starts have included ten games that have gone over the total.

The "under" pitcher in the majors right now is rookie Vin Mazzaro, creating quite a sensation as one of the youngsters in the Oakland Athletics' rotation. All five of his starts have gone under, with an average total of 4.2 runs. Scott Feldman, who seems to have found himself as a member of the rotation with the Texas Rangers (Even money to win the AL West at BetUS) has made eleven starts, with ten of them going "under". Teammate Kevin Millwood has made eleven unders, with two overs and two pushes in his 15 outings.

Much has been about how much of a hitters' park Yankee Stadium has been, and that is not an exaggeration. The new Stadium has produced 3.4 homers per game, which is highest in the major leagues. In fact, there are only three other ballparks in the majors that are within one homer of it. Not surprisingly, it also yields 11.06 runs per game and the highest OPS (on-base average plus slugging percentage) in all the majors at .818. However, the highest figure of runs per game is turned in by Coors Field in Denver, home of the Colorado Rockies (+1600 in the NL West at BetUS), which is averaging 11.31 runs, even though only 2.2 homers per game are being hit there.

The team playing the most unders is the Texas Rangers, and that is something no one would have forecast at the beginning of the season. Texas had 24 overs and 42 unders (with three pushes), which is kind of unusual, since half the games are played at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, and that building has seen 2.8 round-trippers per game (third in ML as well as an .807 OPS (fourth). Well, maybe that's not so unusual, considering that oddsmakers have set totals there well too high.

The Seattle Mariners (+900 in the AL West at BetUS) have played 27 overs and 41 unders (with two pushes) and the Chicago White Sox (+500 to win the AL Central at BetUS) have been in 27 overs as well, with 42 games falling under the total. At Safeco Field in Seattle, 7.56 runs per game have been scored (a major league low). Next in line is San Diego's Petco Park (7.67 - it is also last with a .660 OPS) and U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago (7.83 runs/game). Atlanta's Turner Field is the toughest place to hit a homer, presumably, at 1.1 per game, and the Braves are 29-37-4 in the "over/under" scale.

Tips and Trends

New York Yankees at New York Mets

Yankees (-$1.30, O/U 10 under -$1.15): Chien-Ming Wang goes for his long awaited first victory of the season. The Yankees have destroyed the Mets in the first two games of this series. The Yankees have outscored the Mets, 14-1, and out-hit them, 22-4. The Yankees are 62-30 in their last 92 games during Game 3 of a series. However, Wang has been dreadful this season with a 0-6 mark and 11.20 ERA. The right-hander has yet to reach the sixth inning in a start this season. The Yankees are 1-4 in Wang’s past five interleague starts and 0-4 in his last four road outings. Wang is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in two career starts versus the Mets. The over is 9-3-1 in Wang’s last 13 starts. The Yankees have won six of the last eight meetings between the two teams. Derek Jeter has missed the past two games because of illness.

The Yankees are 4-7 in their last 11 road games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Derek Jeter (illness) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Mets: Playing without injured outfielder Carlos Beltran, first baseman Carlos Delgado and shortstop Jose Reyes, the Mets have not been competitive with the Yankees. Veteran right-hander Livan Hernandez will try to get the Mets on the right track, although he is 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA in six lifetime starts versus the Yankees. Hernandez is 5-2 on the season with a 4.05 ERA. His only two losses have come to the Cardinals. Hernandez faced the Yankees on June 12 and didn’t get a decision in a 9-8 Yankees win. The Yankees scored six runs on seven hits against Hernandez in 5 1/3 innings. Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira and Jeter all smacked home runs off Hernandez. The over has cashed in five of Hernandez’s last seven starts when he’s faced teams with a winning record. The Mets are 3-10 in their last 13 Sunday games.

The Mets are 11-6 in their last 17 home games when going against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Carlos Delgado (hip), Carlos Beltran (knee) and Jose Reyes (calf) are all on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

San Diego Padres at Texas Rangers

Padres: There are multiple reasons why the Padres are such big underdogs. Not only has San Diego scored the fewest runs, but the Padres are 18-41 in their last 59 away matchups. The Padres also have lost 37 of their past 52 interleague games, including going 4-10 this season. Erratic Chad Gaudin gets the start. He’s 3-6 with a 5.60 ERA on the season. He has been worse on the road away from pitcher-friendly Petco Park going 2-4 with a 6.18 ERA. Gaudin, though, tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts in his last start at Seattle. He was the winning pitcher in a 9-7 victory against Seattle on Tuesday. Gaudin yielded two runs on four hits, while going seven innings. Gaudin has an 11-to-three strikeout-to-walk ratio in his last two starts, both against the Mariners. The Padres are 7-20 in their last 27 games versus AL West clubs.

The Padres are 5-17 in their last 22 interleague games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Brian Giles (knee), Nick Hundley (wrist) and Jake Peavy (ankle) are all on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Rangers (-$1.55, O/U 11 over -$1.25): Texas is 17-6 (74 percent) in its last 23 home games versus an opponent with a losing mark. The Rangers are 11-5 in their last 16 interleague games as chalk. Texas also has won 17 of its past 26 home contests. The Rangers have improved their defense and pitching, while missing the bat of injured slugger Josh Hamilton. This has contributed to the under being 42-17-1 in the Rangers’ last 60 games. Tommy Hunter was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Matt Harrison, who was put on the disabled list with a sore left shoulder. Hunter was 3-2 with a 3.83 ERA for Oklahoma City. Hunter also stepped in for Harrison on May 29. The right-hander didn’t get a decision in Texas’ 6-3 victory against the Athletics. Hunter allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and three walks to go with one strikeout.

The Under is 22-6-1 in the Rangers’ last 29 home games.
The Under is 9-1 in Fieldin Culbreth’s lasts 11 games behind home plate.

Key Injuries - Josh Hamilton (abdominal) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
