Tips and Trends

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians

Tigers (-$2.10, O/U 9 under -$1.20): Justin Verlander is a heavy favorite, which is understandable considering Cleveland’s losing streak and his own 16-9 record and 3.44 ERA. Verlander leads the American League in strikeouts. But Verlander also threw a season-high 128 pitches in his last start on Saturday in a game the Tigers lost to the Twins. There is no extra day rest for Verlander despite the high pitch count. The Tigers are 40-18 in Verlander’s last 58 starts versus a team with a losing record. The over has cashed in 11 of Verlander’s last 15 starts versus Cleveland. The right-hander is 8-7 away from spacious Comerica Park with a 4.13 ERA, compared to an 8-2 record at home and 2.62 ERA. Detroit is just 6-9 in its last 15 games and feeling pressure from the Twins while trying to win the American League Central Division. Magglio Ordonez is batting above .400 this month.

The Under is 25-10 in Detroit’s last 35 road games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - Jarrod Washburn (knee) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Indians: Baseball teams in must-win situations can be over inflated in September. But it’s hard to over price any club playing Cleveland these days. The Indians have dropped a season-high 10 straight games. They have been outscored by 40 runs in these games, an average loss of four runs per game. The Indians have managed to score only 25 runs during their losing streak despite facing a number of less-than-imposing starters including Kyle Davis, Carl Pavano, Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Clayton Mortensen, Brett Anderson, Cio Gonzalez and Dana Eveland. Cleveland is 3-14 in its last 17 versus a right-handed starter. The Indians have dropped seven of their past eight home contests. Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 9.64 ERA), acquired from the Phillies in the Cliff Lee deal, is making his fourth big league start. He’s allowed 15 earned runs, including six home runs, in 14 innings.

The Under is 21-10-1 in the Indians’ last 32 home contests.

Key Injuries - Grady Sizemore (elbow) is out.
Matt LaPorta (hip) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
