Tips and Trends

Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers

Mariners: Seattle traveled to Cleveland after the All-Star break and, after losing the first game of the four-game series against the Indians, promptly captured the next three. All four games ducked ‘under’ the closing total, enabling the ‘under’ to cash in each of Seattle’s last six outings. In fact, the Mariners have not allowed more than four runs in any of those four contests. The run of low-scoring games has lifted the ‘under’ to 55-35-2 in Seattle’s first 92 games. A win in Tuesday’s opener against the Tigers would raise Seattle’s road record to .500. Garrett Olson (3-3, 4.53) will get the pitching nod in the opener. The 26-year-old southpaw never got going last Thursday against Cleveland, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks before the Indians chased him in the third inning en route to a 4-1 win. In two starts against Detroit last season, Olson was tagged for 10 earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks in 7 2-3 innings. The Mariners are 4-5 in Olson’s nine starts this season, with the ‘under’ going 6-2-1. Seattle is six games above .500 despite getting outscored this season by 13 runs (376-363).

Seattle is 6-2 in its last eight road games.

Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Tigers (-$1.25 O/U 9): Detroit picked the wrong team to open the season’s second half, as they were swept in a three-game series by the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers continued to struggle on offense, scoring just five runs in the three-game set and going a remarkably dismal 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position. The Tigers do have two things going for them in Tuesday’s opener against Seattle. Jim Leyland’s troops are a fine 27-13 at Comerica Park and 18-11 against southpaw starters. Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.14) will make his first start since July 5, the result of the Tigers' effort to hold down his workload as the 20-year-old enters the second half of his rookie season. He pitched 125 innings last year in his only full pro season, and he's at 87 innings now. Porcello beat these Mariners, 8-2, on April 19 for his first Major League win. He tossed seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits as a $1.00 road underdog. The Tigers are 11-6 in Porcello’s first 17 starts, with the ‘under’ going 10-7.

Detroit is 20-8 in its last 28 home games.

Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4
