Tips and Trends

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox

Angels (-$1.10, O/U 9.5): The Angels could be tired playing in their third different city in three days. The Angels arrived in New York at 2 a.m. for a makeup game against the Yankees on Monday. The Red Sox, on the other hand, were idle on Monday. The Angels have won six of their last seven games at Fenway Park. They lead the majors in team batting average and are on pace to break the franchise record for runs scored in a season. John Lackey (10-7, 3.53 ERA) has allowed just one earned run in his last three starts spanning 26 innings. He shut out the Mariners on Thursday allowing five hits and only one walk while fanning seven. Lackey had good bite on his breaking ball and his fastball was consistently in the 92-94 mph range. Lackey, however, is 2-4 at Fenway Park with a 6.34 ERA in eight career starts there.

The Angels are 27-13 in their last 40 road contests.
The Under is 11-1-1 in the Angels’ last 13 games versus a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Red Sox: Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to make his first big league appearance since June 19, nearly three months after going on the DL with right shoulder woes. The 28-year-old right-hander has had a miserable Major League season this year after leading Japan to its second consecutive World Baseball Classic title in the spring. Matsuzaka is 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA. Boston is 0-4 in Matsuzaka’s last four home starts. “Dice-K” was tagged for six runs on seven hits in five innings during his one career regular-season outing versus the Angels. The Red Sox have dropped 13 of their last 18 games to the Angels. They are 3-7 in their last 10 versus AL West clubs. The Red Sox have won 49 of their past 68 home contests. They are 39-14 in their last 53 games at Fenway Park when facing a right-handed starter. Boston is 36-17 when playing on Tuesday.

The Over is 16-7 in Boston’s last 23 home contests.

Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals

Marlins: The Marlins have a motivation edge gunning for a wild-card spot, while the Cardinals are waltzing to the NL Central Division title. Florida has won eight of its last 12 games. The Marlins, though, have lost seven of their past nine games at Busch Stadium. They are 8-21 in their last 29 overall games against the Cardinals. Rookie lefty Sean West will be making his 18th big league start. He’s 6-5 with a 4.81 ERA. The Marlins will be monitoring West closely since he’s thrown 152 innings this season, counting his minor league innings. West also turned his ankle in his last start running the bases in the fifth inning on Thursday against the Mets and had to be removed after going four plus innings. He had given up four earned runs and six hits. The teams are 11-6-1 to the under in their last 18 head-to-head meetings.

The Over is 27-12-1 in Florida’s last 40 games.

Key Injuries - Jeremy Hermida (oblique) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cardinals (-$2.40, O/U 8 over -$1.15): Adam Wainwright could add to his Cy Young credentials with another strong performance. Wainwright’s 18 victories are the most in the majors and his 2.59 ERA ranks No. 3 in the National League. Since the All-Star break, Wainwright has a 1.81 ERA and has surrendered just three homers in 74 2/3 innings during that span. He pitched seven scoreless innings against Milwaukee on Wednesday in picking up his latest victory. Matt Holliday is batting .371 with 48 RBIs in 47 games since being acquired from Oakland on July 24. Holliday has helped St. Louis go 33-14 during this time frame. The Cardinals, though, were in danger of losing five in a row for the first time since June, but ended their four-game losing streak battering the Marlins, 11-6, on Monday night. Despite that high score, the Cardinals still are 20-10-1 to the under in their last 31 home contests.

The Cardinals are 39-13 in their last 52 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - John Smoltz (shoulder) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)
