Arizona Diamondbacks at Cincinnati Reds

Diamondbacks: Injuries, the fourth-lowest batting average in baseball and terrible defense have contributed to the Diamondbacks owning the second-worst record in the National League, while losing eight of their last 10 games. Arizona has struggled in Cincinnati losing six of the past eight times to the Reds on the road. Some help is on the way as first baseman Chad Tracy was activated off the DL and is slated to start at first base. Jon Garland (4-7, 5.04 ERA) gets the start. Arizona is 0-8 in Garland’s last eight starts. The last time Garland won was May 19. He wasn’t sharp in his last outing, allowing six runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings in what turned out to be a 9-8 loss to Texas. Garland has been much better on the road with a 2-3 mark and 2.60 ERA compared to 2-4 with a 7.51 ERA at home.

Cueto has given up 10 earned runs in his last two starts spanning 10 2/3 innings against the White Sox and Blue Jays. During this span, he’s allowed 15 hits and been rocked for four home runs. In his previous three starts, the right-hander had yielded just two earned runs in 17 2/3 innings and only one home run. Cueto has pitched well this season at hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. He’s 6-2 at home with a 2.14 ERA. Cueto has faced Arizona twice in his career. He is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts versus the Diamondbacks. The under is 41-13-5 (76 percent) in the last 59 meetings between the two clubs. The under is 24-4-4 in the last 32 meetings between the teams in Cincinnati.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

Angels: A key question is have the Angels lost their momentum after surrendering five homers to the Rangers in Tuesday’s 9-5 loss? Los Angeles had won their previous seven road contests and 13 of their past 16 overall games before Tuesday’s defeat. They’ll turn to right-hander Jered Weaver (8-3, 2.65 ERA). The Angels have won six of Weaver’s last seven starts. The under is 6-0-1 in Weaver’s last seven starts versus the Rangers. Weaver has been solid nearly the entire season holding opponents to three runs or fewer in 12 of 15 starts. Weaver has been better at home than on the road where he’s 3-2 with a 3.77 ERA compared to 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA at Angel Stadium. Weaver will be dealing with an over-the-total home plate umpire in Tim McClelland. The over is 10-4-2 the last 16 times McClelland has been behind the plate.

He’s been very effective at home going 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA, compared to 2-4 with a 3.22 ERA on the road. The Rangers have won 19 of his last 27 home starts. Millwood held San Diego to two runs on four hits in six innings Friday in a 12-2 home victory. It was his sixth quality start in a row. Millwood has averaged 114 pitches during this span, which could take a toll later when the weather really turns hot and humid in Arlington. The under is 21-6-1 in the Rangers’ last 28 games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
