Tips and Trends

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds

Cubs (-$1.65 O/U 9): Tom Gorzelanny celebrated his first win in his first start with the Cubs and Kosuke Fukudome smacked his first career leadoff home run to lead the Cubs to Tuesday’s 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the middle game of this three-game series. The win allowed the Cubs to stay tied with the Cards atop the NL Central standings and lifted Chicago’s road record to 24-29. The Cubs have now won 14 of 19 games since the All-Star break, the best mark in the National League. Rich Harden (7-6, 4.50 ERA) matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in his last start against the Marlins, but didn't get the win. The right-hander threw 99 pitches over five innings and left with the score tied. Harden has now fanned 11 batters three times in his career and has nine double-digit strikeout games. Harden allowed the Marline two runs on five hits and three walks in a game the Cubs eventually lost, 5-2. The Cubs are now 9-9 in Harden’s first 18 starts, with the ‘under’ going 9-7-2. The ‘under’ is 56-45-4 in Chicago’s first 105 games, including 30-20-3 in the club’s first 53 road encounters. Harden has won both starting assignments against the Reds this season (5-2 and 7-2), allowing a combined three runs on nine hits and fanning 16 batters in 12 innings. Both games were played at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are 10-3 in their last 13 games.

Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Reds: Cincinnati has now lost 14 of its last 15 games, including the last eight in a row. The loss lowered the Reds’ home record to 23-29. Cincinnati has also lost eight of 11 meetings against the Cubs this season, including the last six in a row. In addition, the Reds have failed to score more than three runs in any of the last four setbacks. After nine relief appearances this season, Justin Lehr's first starting assignment Friday against the Rockies ended earlier than he had hoped after the right-hander walked six batters in just five innings encompassing 97 pitches. Lehr allowed two runs in the first and then walked the bases loaded in the second before escaping with just one run. He settled down over the next three innings and didn't allow a run. Lehr will make his second career start, and look for his first win against the Cubs.

The Reds are 6-23 in their last 29 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Scott Rolen (head) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4
