Tips and Trends

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers

Athletics: The Athletics are playing well, winning seven of their last nine games. Oakland is batting above .300 during this span while averaging 6.5 runs. Ryan Sweeney has been Oakland’s hottest batter with 12 hits in his last 27 at bats (.444) with eight RBIs in his last six games. Trevor Cahill (8-12, 4.74 ERA) is looking to rebound from one of his worst starts. The 21-year-old right-hander gave up three runs, five hits and two walks to the White Sox on the road last week before getting the hook in the third inning. He’s allowed 26 homers, the most ever by an Oakland rookie. The Rangers knocked out two homers against Cahill when they faced him on Aug. 6 on their way to scoring five runs on eight hits in a 6-4 Texas win. The teams are 14-6-1 to the under in their last 21 head-to-head meetings.

The Athletics are 19-45 in their past 64 road games versus teams with a winning record.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rangers (-$1.50, O/U 10): The Rangers could be pressing. They are 1-5 on their current homestand and trail AL wild-card leader Boston by 6 ½ games. Texas has managed just one run in its last 28 innings. The Rangers have been without All-Stars Michael Young and Josh Hamilton. Young played for the first time since Sept. 1 as a DH on Tuesday. He flew out in his only at bat and was replaced. Young has been out with a strained left hamstring. He said he felt OK, but wanted to wait another day or two before playing full-time again. Right-hander Dustin Nippert (5-2, 3.95 ERA) is slated to make his first start since Sept. 1 when he beat the Blue Jays, allowing two runs in six innings during a 5-2 victory. Nippert is 3-2 as a starter with a 4.43 ERA. He’s 2-0 out of the bullpen with a 0.90 ERA.

The Under is 76-34-6 (69 percent) in the Rangers’ last 116 games.

Key Injuries - Michael Young (hamstring) is day-to-day.
Josh Hamilton (back) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants

Rockies: Colorado has lost five straight games to the Giants. The Rockies are 1-7 in San Francisco this season. Colorado has scored only 28 runs in its last nine games, plating more than five runs just four times during their past 27 games. The Rockies are tough at Coors Field, but are just .500 on the road and have lost 14 of their last 17 away contests to teams with a winning record. Jorge De La Rosa hopes to stop the bleeding. He’s 14-9 with a 4.37 ERA. The Rockies are 15-3 during De La Rosa’s last 18 starts. The southpaw hasn’t given up more than one earned run in each of his last three starts. He has 25 strikeouts in his last four starts, but also has walked 17 during this span. The under has cashed seven of the past 10 times De La Rosa has been an underdog.

The Rockies are 10-1 in De La Rosa’s last 11 starts with four days rest

Key Injuries - Huston Street (bicep) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$1.35, O/U 7): The Giants are very tough at AT&T Park, where they’ve won 36 of their past 53 home contests. Matt Cain has been one of the best pitchers in baseball with a 13-5 record and 2.61 ERA. The Giants have won three of Cain’s four starts against Colorado this season. He last faced the Rockies on Aug. 30, where he surrendered four runs in six innings giving up back-to-back homers to Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki. Cain hasn’t been as dominant in his last three starts, allowing 10 earned runs and 19 hits, including three home runs, in 19 innings. The right-hander is 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA when pitching at home this year. The Giants are 18-6 in Cain’s last 24 starts. San Francisco is 6-1 against NL West teams the past seven times Cain has faced them. Catcher Bengie Molina is 9-for-22 (.409) in his last six games

The Under has cashed in 8 of Cain’s last 10 home starts against Colorado.

Key Injuries - Randy Johnson (shoulder) is on the DL.
Edgar Renteria (shoulder) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)
