Matt Fargo

Oakland at Chicago
Pick: Oakland +130

Playing on underdogs is a streaky endeavor at times and a lot of folks simply do not like betting on so-called “bad teams”. I for one completely flip that around and say I do not like betting on “bad teams” that are favored. And there is a good amount on the board every day and we have another example right here. Oakland may be considered a bad team by some but I consider Chicago a bad team as well and it is favored at a relatively high price. The White Sox are only 4.5 games better than that A’s and take away the first 15 games of the season on each side and that separation goes to just a game and a half so for the last five weeks, they have played pretty equal. Oakland salvaged a win in the series finale against Texas which hopefully can provide some good momentum heading into Monday. The A’s send Trevor Cahill to the rubber and he is definitely being overlooked here. Cahill has a 4.45 ERA and 1.50 WHIP on the season but those numbers and skewed by two games and two games only. Take away starts against the Tigers and Rays where he allowed seven runs in each and his ERA drops to an extremely solid 2.36 and his WHIP goes down to 1.27. He has allowed two runs or fewer in all eight of his other starts showing he is extremely consistent despite what the big picture may show. Chicago counters with Bartolo Colon who was a top quality pitcher just a couple ears ago. I do not consider him that anymore and while his numbers look slightly above average, this may be the time to go against. He has allowed two earned runs over his last three starts so that alone signals contrarian thinking. Only three of his nine starts have been quality including just one of four at night where he has a 5.75 ERA with Chicago going 1-3 in his four starts under the lights. The White Sox are just 1-5 in Colon’s six starts this season against a team with a losing record. Also, when listed as a heavy favorite between -125 to -150, Colon’s teams have gone just 13-22 showing just how overpriced he can be. 5* Oakland A’s

Top NL Total

I'm playing on Philadelphia and San Diego to finish UNDER the total. Many will expect this to be a high-scoring game. I'm not one of them. Blanton's overall numbers admittedly aren't very good. That said, he's better than his stats show and he demonstrated that in his last outing. Indeed, he went seven shutout innings and allowed only five hits. His 11 K's (only 2 walks) in that game show that he's capable of dominating. Correia wasn't nearly as sharp as Blanton was in his last start, as he was roughed up at Arizona. He'd been very solid in each of his previous three starts though, so I'm willing to cut him some slack. He went a minimum of six innings in each of those three starts (total of 19 1/3) and allowed only six combined runs. (That's a 2.79 ERA.) In his most recent start here at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, he allowed only one run through 6 1/3 innings. Both bullpens have been solid. The Phillies relievers have a combined 3.24 ERA and 1.147 WHIP on the road. Meanwhile, the Padres relievers have a stellar 2.20 ERA and 1.146 WHIP. The Padres are hitting only .216 here at home and averaging only 3.7 runs. Opposing teams are hitting only .216 here and averaging only 3.2 runs. The Phillies, who are off a sweep vs. Washington, have seen the UNDER go 5-2-1 when coming off three straight wins. I expect those numbers to improve here. *Top NL Total

Blue Chip

I'm playing on Seattle and Baltimore to finish UNDER the total. I played on the Mariners to finish 'over' the total yesterday and they exploded for 15 hits and eight runs, while giving up a whopping nine runs to the Angels. That wasn't typical for the Mariners though, as they'd seen the 'under' go 9-1 their previous 10 games. I expect things to return to "normal" and for this evening's game to be of the low-scoring variety. While he didn't get the decision, Washburn tossed six shutout innings in his last start. The final score was 4-3 in favor of Oakland which brought the UNDER to 6-3 in his nine starts. He's averaging better than six innings per start and has a solid 3.45 ERA and 1.204 WHIP. Hill had some trouble in his lone road start. However, he's been sharp in both his road starts (3.17 ERA) and both of them stayed below the total. Those games finished with scores of 4-2 and 3-2. Seattle comes in as the lowest scoring team in the majors. In fact, the Mariners average only 3.9 rpg including a mere 3.6 here at home. The Orioles don't exactly light it up on the road either. They average 4.4 runs away from Baltimore and hit only .232. They also don't score nearly as many runs vs. left-handers and have seen the UNDER go a perfect 4-0 their last four against southpaws. I expect those numbers to improve here. *Blue Chip
