Tony Mathews

Matchup: Atlanta Braves vs. Colorado Rockies

Selection: Atlanta Braves -105

Explanation: We will side with the Atlanta Braves as they face-off against the Colorado Rockies in Monday's MLB contest.

The Atlanta Braves will use starting pitcher Tom Glavine. We like what we saw in Tom Glavine's first start of the season. Tom Glavine might of pitched only 5 innings, however, allowed only 1 single run. We see Tom Glavine pitching another solid game today!

The Colorado Rockies will use starting pitcher Aaron Cook. Aaron Cook struggled in his first start of the season. Aaron Cook went 6 innings while allowing 4 runs. We see Aaron Cook struggling once again today.

We don't mind the fact that the Atlanta Braves will be playing on the road. That's because Tom Glavine is a solid road pitcher. In fact, the Atlanta Braves are 21-9 in Tom Glavine's last 30 road starts.

Take the Atlanta Braves

For Monday take the Rays in New York.

Yesterday the Yankees skunked me 2-0 as I had James Shields and the visitors from Tampa Bay but I am still going back to that well here with the pesky Rays.

Tampa is not that bad at all and I am not really that high on the Yankees right now. Of course Arod, Jeter, Abreu, Posada and the getting older by the day Yankees can bash around Jason Hammel but Mike Mussina is no Cy Young right now himself with that 85 mph fastball and Carl Crawford and the fellas will definitely get their licks in here and have a great shot to take three of four in this series.

Joe Girardi's team is still obviously the better of these two teams and I would be crazy to try and dispute that but they are not hitting that much at all and over the past few seasons have been fairly terrible in the month of April.

Hammel will give up some runs but Crawford, Carlos Pena, Johny Gomes, BJ Upton and the talented boys from Tampa should get to the old man Mussina and help light up the scoreboard as well.

Early September of last season Hammell threw five quality innings against the Bombers allowing just one run in striking out seven. If he can do anything close to that then we are in great shape. If he doesn't then we still have a chance going up against the Moose and that's enough for me at this price.

It's the home opener for Arizona so the place will be packed and rocking as this team puts up its NL West championship banner and blasts the hell out of the Dodgers and Esteban Loaiza.

Plus the D'Backs get to show off newly acquired Danny Harren on the mound after he pitches good but not great in his first outing of the season on the road in Cincinnati. Haren allowed three runs on four hits in six innings in a 6-5 loss to the Reds but he got a no-decision. The former A's star was the All-Star starter last season for the AL and is 1-0 withi a 2.70 ERA in his career against the Dodgers.

Loaiza is making his first start of the season for the Dodgers. He appeared in relief on Wednesday and got tagged with the loss against the giants. He pitches just 2.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits. But this veteran must hate the Arizona environment as he's 0-4 in the desert in seven career starts with a 6.05 ERA.

Arizona is on a bit of a roll having just swept National League champion Colorado over the weekend. They got a 5-2 win on Sunday to sweep the Rockies in Colorado in their opening homestand.

Haren is out to impress in front of the home fans in this one and Loaiza is going to get swarmed by the D'Backs bats. Play Arizona in this one as the D'Backs blow out the Dodgers in the Phoenix desert.

4* ARIZONA

Tonight I am counting on some runs at Yankee Stadium. Thus far the Yanks have played UNDER the total in 5 of their first 6 games of the campaign.

Have to expect that to change tonight, as Mike Mussina is likely to give up a few runs once again. Mussina should not be in the starting rotation, and he did give up 3 runs in his first start of the season last time out.

Hammel is making his first start of the year, and he did have an over 6 ERA for the season last year.

No doubt about it, the runs will add up tonight as we finally get an OVER at Yankee Stadium.

1* OVER

Selection: Minnesota Twins +135

Today the Minnesota Twins will be on the road as they take on the Chicago White Sox. We will side with the Minnesota Twins as underdogs. We feel the Minnesota Twins will be sending the much better pitcher to the mound. The Minnesota Twins will send to the mound Nick Blackburn. Nick Blackburn to start off the season (in his last outing) had a solid game. In that game, Nick Blackburn pitched 7 innings while allowing only 1 single run. As for the Chicago White Sox, they will send to the mound Javier Vazquez. Javier Vazquez to start the season off (in his last outing) struggled. In that game, Javier Vazquez pitched only 5 innings while allowing 4 runs. To say the least, the Minnesota Twins will be sending to the mound the much better pitcher. The bottom line, we are getting the team with the better starting pitcher at an underdog price!

Take the Minnesota Twins +135

BRAD DIAMOND SPORTS

Play on: Baltimore over Seattle (Silva)

Not a good sign when a highly productive club chases their ace (former Oriole Erik Bedard)who has a hip inflammation (sure?)for a righty like Silva (0.86 WHIP 2008)in a get away game. Right now Baltimore is sitting at 4-1 (first place) in the division, while the Mariners are staggering after three straight losses in Birdland. Just last season Baltimore was 13-31 in one-run games, but Sunday the O's scored three in the bottom of the ninth to capture a win out of the jaws of defeat. Seattle did not lose such a game in all of 2007. That may cause a negative mindset, despite the "must win" nature of the encounter for the Mariners.
