Ben Burns

Los Angeles Angels at Washington Nationals
Prediction: under

Lackey has seen the UNDER go a perfect 7-0 in his seven starts this season. During that stretch, he's gone 4-1 with an outstanding 1.73 ERA and 0.923 WHIP. Most recently, he limited the Mets to just one run through 7 2/3 innings. This evening, he'll have the advantage of facing the lowest-scoring team in the National League. He'll be opposed by Jason Bergmann. While Bergmann's overall stats aren't that great, he is coming off a quality effort, limiting the Twins to five hits and one earned run through six innings. Including that result, Bergmann now has a solid 3.02 ERA in seven starts since being recalled from Triple-A. While Bergmann allowed one earned run or less in five of those seven starts, he has received very little run support. In fact, the Nationals have provided him with only five total runs in those seven games! Facing Lackey, he's not likely to get much run support here either. He will have the advantage of facing the Angels for the first time though, as no Angels hitter has faced him before. Two of Bergmann's last three home starts have fallen below the total bringing the UNDER to 8-5-2 his last 15 home starts, dating back to last season. Consider a play on the UNDER

Los Angeles Angels at Washington Nationals

The Angels have won four of their last five contests and have played great away from home, 8-1 in their last 9 road games. Meanwhile, Washington has lost 5 of their last 6 games and six of its last 7 at home. Los Angeles will send John Lackey to the hill. The right-handed is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last three starts. Washington counters with right-hander Jason Bergmann, who is 0-3 with a 6.59 ERA in his last three stars. Go with the Angels and Lackey to grab a victory in Washington against the plummeting Nationals. Washington bats are lifeless and they have lost Bergmann's last five starts at Nationals Park.

Sportsbettingstats

Colorado Rockies at Kansas City Royals

The Rockies come into this game after losing to the New York Mets 3-1, while the Royals beat San Francisco yesterday 11-10. Both teams are near the bottom of their divisions and are each around 10 games under .500, but both have been playing well as of late. The Rockies are 6-4 in their last 10 games and the Royals are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Taking the mound for the Rockies is Jeff Francis (3-6 5.22 ERA), who in his last outing pitched well going 6 innings giving up only 1 earned run in a win. In yesterdays loss to the Mets the Rockies scored 1 run on 4 hits and left 9 men on base. On defense the Rockies allowed 3 runs on 6 hits to the Mets. Taking the mound for the Royals is Brian Bannister (6-6 4.81 ERA), who in his last outing went 7 innings giving up 2 earned runs in a win. In yesterdays win over the Giants the Royals scored 11 runs on 14 hits and left 8 men on base. On defense the Royals allowed 10 runs on 16 hits to the Giants.

Staff Pick: Even though both teams are well under .500 they are both playing well in inter-league play, as the Royals are 9-3 against the NL and the Rockies are 7-2 against the AL. The advantage in the pitching match up for this game has to go to Bannister, who is looking for his 3rd straight win. Both pitchers had strong outing in their last starts. Cinderella has left the building for the Rockies, as they will have to make another spectacular 2nd half run to make the playoffs again. The Rockies rank 23rd in the Majors in runs scored (321), while the Royals rank 28th (291). The problems with the Rockies this season is that they have been beset by injuries and their team ERA is the 5th worst in the Majors (4.62). Both teams have endured long losing streaks this season, but both are rebounding and starting to make up a little ground in their respective divisions. With the slight edge to the Royals in the pitching match up coupled with the fact that the Rockies are not a good road team (12-25) should spell success for the Royals, as they will win game 1 of this series.

Royals 7 Rockies 5

Wunderdog

Milwaukee at Atlanta
Pick: Atlanta +106

It would be easy to look at the Braves overall record and discount this line having any value facing Ben Sheets. The fact is that the Braves are 27-12 at home and 4-1 when posted as a home dog. They have been a dominating team at home and have taken out some of the best pitchers the NL has to offer. The Braves beat Santana twice and once each over Brandon Webb and NL ERA leader Edinson Volquez at home this season. While Ben Sheets has been superb, so were the other aforementioned pitchers and they left Atlanta with a loss. Jo Jo Reyes is certainly capable of keeping the Braves in this one as he has allowed two runs or less in six of his 10 starts. The value is on Atlanta here.

Take the Mariners as the big road dog for the win over the Mets.

Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Seattle has the worst record in the majors and is going against Johan Santana.

Well I’ll tell you the reason we’re siding with the Mariners.

Felix Hernandez.

Forget everything about Santana and his superlative record against the M’s in his career. This is a new team and a new league, so that goes out the window.

Instead focus on what Hernandez has done recently. How’s a 0.95 ERA and a .184 opponents batting average sound while winning four straight starts?

Sounds good enough for me to back him as a live dog here.

I’ve seen this kid rise to the occasion more than once in his career. Remember the highly anticipated Dice-K start at Fenway last season?

I do. Hernandez pitches a one-hit shutout and the M’s win.

Don’t be surprised if he does something similar again tonight.

Take the M’s as a very live dog tonight over the Mets.

3* SEATTLE

Drew Gordon

Seattle +155 at NY METS

There's few times you can confidently back this Mariners team on the road, but that being said, one of those times is tonight, when you're getting one of the hottest pitchers in baseball at plus money. But let me explain further...

Its not just that Seattle's Felix Hernandez is hot, he's gone nuclear, going 4-0 with a miniscule 0.95 ERA over his last 4 starts! Opposing offenses are batting just .184 over that span against him, and when you consider 3 of those wins came against the (resurgent) Tigers, the Red Sox, and Marlins, it's that much more impressive. Then, throw in the fact the Mariners are 5-1 all-time against the Mets, and all of a sudden, that plus money is starting to look real good!

Mets Johan Santana gets the start, and while he's also pitched well of late, he hasn't got the same winning results as Hernandez, going 0-2 with a 2.37 ERA over his last 3 starts - all of which were Mets losses. He did not look good in his last start, getting tagged for 4 earned over 6 innings at the Angels. And despite the fact he has a solid career numbers against the Mariners, he'll have to be next to perfect to outpitch the surging Hernandez in this one.

Finally, while many of you already know about the Mets prowess against lefties this season, there's two things you might have missed. First, although they bat .297 against southpaws at Shea, they average only 4.3 runs in that spot. And second, despite all the Mariners woes at the plate, they happen to hit lefties well, batting .276 against them away.

Look guys, I'm not saying the Mariners win this series, but what I am saying is they've got one of the hottest arms in the Majors pitching tonight, at a price that's simply too good to ignore. We'll make this one a small play, but make no mistake, grab the plus money with the Mariners and King Felix in this one!

Take the Mariners behind Hernandez over the NY Mets and Santana in this MLB match up.

I thought about taking Ben Sheets in this contest, thinking he could pitch the Brew Crew to a rare win at Turner Field. After all, the Brewers have won his last five starts against Atlanta. But the fact they’re 1-4 the last five times they’ve visited the A-T-L left me leery. Instead, I noticed plenty of reasons to play the low number in this one, believing Sheets and Jo Jo Reyes could keep this one low.

First and foremost is this series, which has stayed under six of the last seven meetings, and 17 of the last 25 meetings in Atlanta. Now I know the over has gone over more times than not when Sheets is facing the NL Tribe, but he’s an entirely different pitcher this season, displaying the type of talent that was envisioned when he was drafted in the first round in 1999. The under is 17-5 in the Crew’s last 22 against the NL East and 11-3 in the opener of the Brewers’ last 14 series.

On the other hand, there are a slew of factors with Atlanta and Reyes, as the under is 9-2 in his last 11 overall, 44-18 in the team’s last 62, 20-8 in series openers, 4-1 in the Braves’ last five at home and 24-7 in their last 31 against the NL Central. We may have to lay a price to stay under 9, but that’s fine, as this one stays low.

2* UNDER

For Monday take the Diamondbacks at Fenway.

Let me just say that there is really only one play that I love today and that is in the game from Turner Field so make sure you purchase that fire-hot lock. But with a gun to my head I will take my chances with the snakes plus this number in Beantown.

Obviously Boston is a juggernaut and despite the rare series loss to the Cardinals are still more than capable to do some damage today against the struggling and ice cold boys from the desert. But with Big Papi still out and against a guy in Dan Haren who is more than capable I will back the visitors and take this fairly healthy price.

Josh Beckett is definitely a stud and looked great in that last start and may very well here against a reeling opponent but Haren is a former American Leaguer (A's) who should hold his own as well today as the guy is really really good. The Arizona starter is not chopped liver and was a Cy Young candidate a season ago.

Arizona has talent with Young, Upton, Reynolds and others and plus this number with a quality hurler in Haren is enough to make a small play on the Diamondbacks!

Your Monday selection is the Los Angeles Angels.

No doubt a bit of a high number with this one, but due to a limited card today this one is my second best play of the day as I look for the Angels to bury the slumping Nationals. After all thanks to the Angels impressive sweep over the Phillies it’s Los Angeles who rolls into tonight with major momentum. Momentum that will continue tonight in our Nations Capital against what is a very bad Washington team that has lost their last two games, 5 of their last 6 and sit just 15-23 at home this season. Even worst tonight for the National will be the fact that they will be at a huge disadvantage on the hill with Bergman 1-5 on the year as Washington is just 1-8 when the righty starts. Meanwhile for the Angels Lackey comes in hot at 3-0 with an ERA of 1.64 over his last 3. Flat out this one has mismatch written all over it and I am a bit surprised that the Angels are not an even bigger favorite.

All Los Angeles!

Priceless Picks

1 Unit Play on Colorado Rockies -103

The Rockies have won 5 of the last 7 meetings in this interleague matchup and they have the edge tonight with the southpaw Francis on the hill. The Rockies are 9-2 in Francis' last 11 Monday starts, 12-3 in Francis' last 15 road starts vs. a team with a losing record, and 20-6 in Francis' last 26 starts vs. a team with a losing record period. The Rockies are also 5-0 in their last 5 interleague games and 5-0 in their last 5 vs. the American League Central. The Royals are just 16-49 in their last 65 Monday games. In other words, this team does not start series' well historically. The Royals are also just 20-41 in their last 61 home games vs. a left-handed starter. Bet the Rocks tonight.
