Triple Threat Sports

Play: Boston

Respect what Chicago has done as a home dog this year, but BoSox are very solid in AF role as well, going 8-3 when priced in this range, and the Red Sox are a very solid 17-9 against southpaw starters this year. Pitching matchup greatly favors road team, as Beckett has a 3-0 personal and 4-0 Team Start mark against the ChiSox while Danks has been hit around hard (8.68 ERA) in his only two starts against Boston.

Drew Gordon

St. Louis at FLORIDA -125

Now that the Marlins bats have come back to life (14 runs L2 games), they can get back to playing their brand of baseball, which thrives off power vs. finesse. Good news for Florida-backers is the Fish get just what the doctor ordered to keep their bats hot in the Cardinals struggling Joel Piniero tonight.

Speaking of Piniero, he's gotten absolutely rocked in each of his last 3 road starts, allowing a whopping 17 runs on 30 hits over his last 15 2/3 innings away! Look guys, its not just on the road either, as Piniero has had issues everywhere he's pitched, posting a 6.61 ERA over his last 8 start (allowing 10 hits or more in 6 of those 8 contests)! With the Marlins offense getting back on track over the weekend, Piniero finds himself in DEEP trouble tonight.

Opposing Piniero is the Marlins Anibal Sanchez, who two starts into his 2008 comeback season, has looked relatively solid, going 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA. He got his only win thus far at Dolphin Stadium, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits over 5 2/3 innings to the Rockies back on July 31st. Although questions still remain about his ability to recapture his 2006 form, fact of the matter is, he's pitching a hell of lot better than Piniero is right now, only 2 games into his season!

Finally, while the Marlins offense has awoken from a short slumber, the Cards offense has been nowhere to be found, scoring 2 runs or fewer in 3 of their last 4 games (1-3 over that span). While the Cards usually hit righties well on the road, they're not swinging the bats partiularly well of late, and face a Florida team that's 21-15 against righties at home under the lights! In the end, the Marlins protect their house, as Piniero's road woes are the difference in this one.

Take Florida behind Sanchez over St. Louis and Piniero in this MLB match up.

CHRIS JAMES SPORTS

Nationals/Brewers Over 8

Brewers RL -1.5 (+102)

Today is the final game of a 4 game set between the Brewers and Nationals and it's a series that Milwaukee really needed. So far they have won all three games and should have no problem getting the sweep today! There is one big reason I feel so confident about both of these selections today and that is the fact the Nationals are sending Garrett Mock to the mound. This will only me Mock's third start this season and his first since June 21st. He is 0-2 on the year with a 4.91 ERA. In his two starts this year his ERA is 6.97. In his last start he gave up 8 runs 4 earned, 8 hits and 8 walks in six innings against the Rangers which resulted in a 13-3 loss for the Nationals. Look for a similar outcome today! The Nationals are 19-41 in their last 60 road games and 16-35 in their last 51 vs. a right handed starter. That makes are a bad match-up for them today as they are facing righty Dave Bush. Bush isn't a great pitcher, but the Brewers offense should give him plenty of breathing room against Mock today. Bush is 6-9 with a 4.5 ERA on the year. The Brewers are 4-1 in Bush's last 5 starts and 8-2 in his last 10 home starts. The Over is 8-1 in Bush's last 9 home starts as a favorite and 7-2 in the last 9 Brewer's home games. Look for Milwaukee to score plenty of runs today and push this game over while covering the RL. Chris James Free Play Selection is on the Nationals/Brewers Over 8 and Brewers RL.

Las Vegas Insider

The storyline surrounding tonight's game is obvious. However, whether or not the Packers will survive without Brett or whether or not Aaron Rodgers is "ready for prime time," will NOT be decided tonight. However, the Packers depth-chart only goes three-deep at QB, with Brian Brohm and Matt Fynn following Rodgers. That may mean a little extra work for Rodgers plus I like Brohm. All three QBs will face a Cincinnati defense which has little front-line talent, no less any depth. As for the Bengals, head coach Marvin Lewis said when asked how long Palmer would play, "We've generally gone between 10 and 15, those numbers of snaps." After that it's backups Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Rowe, and possibly Palmer's brother, Jordan. I'm not high on ANY of those three. It looks like WR Chad Johnson may see some action, despite some lingering ankle concerns. However, WR Houshmandzadeh (leg) and RB Rudi Johnson (hamstring) are unlikely to play. With this game being carried on ESPN, HC Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson just may want "to make a point." I'm 'betting' they have an agenda.

Wunderdog

Washington at Milwaukee
Pick: Milwaukee -1.5 runs

There is great value on The Brew Crew on the runline here. The Nats' pen ranks 20th in the major leagues and send out a pitcher today that has logged just two major-league starts. Mock is primarily a bullpen pitcher which means the underbelly of that Nats' pen is gonna get a lot of exposure here. Mock has not worked more than 1.1 innings since June in a game and was rocked in his two starts early on. The Brewers' bats have produced 5+ runs in each of the last five and this one should be another big performance for a win on the runline as the Brewers get the four-game sweep.

1 Unit PLAY on Detroit Tigers -153

The Blue Jays are just 4-10 in their last 14 games as a road underdog and 2-6 in Marcum's last 8 starts. The Tigers are 17-7 in their last 24 home games and 36-16 in their last 52 games as a favorite. The Tigers are an impressive 7-1 in Verlander's last 8 starts vs. the American League East, 7-2 in Verlander's last 9 starts as a favorite, and 26-11 in Verlander's last 37 starts that are right on time with 4 days of rest. Take the Tigers at home behind Verlander.

LT Profits

Toronto Blue Jays +140

Shaun Marcum of the Toronto Blue Jays looked like his old self in his last start, while Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers has resumed his early season struggles, making the Jays a nice value play at this price.

Verlander was considered a Cy Yong candidate before this season started, but he had a terrible start before appearing to straighten himself out. However, his early season struggled have resurfaced in his last three starts, as he has a 9.35 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 17.1 innings over these starts while allowing at least five earned runs in each outing. Verlander has been one of the biggest money burners in baseball this year, as the Tigers are 9-15 as a team in all of his starts despite him usually being heavily favored.

Now Marcum struggled in his first few starts after coming off the Disabled List, but that is understandable for a control pitcher, as his location was off just a tad. He did look like his old self last start however, allowing one run and three hits in seven innings. Now granted, that was against the light-hitting Oakland Athletics, but that does not change the fact that he had near perfect location. Marcum still has a 3.44 ERA and an excellent 1.10 WHIP for the entire season, so if his mechanics are indeed back in synch, he will by tough to hit for anybody.

Finally, the Blue Jays have the much stronger bullpen, improving their value even more.

Pick: Blue Jays +140

Philadelphia Phillies +120

The Los Angeles Dodgers just lost a series to the lowly San Francisco Giants mainly due to their porous defense, while the Philadelphia Phillies have been at their best as underdogs lately.

As much as the trade for Manny Ramirez helped the Dodgers offensively, his presence in the outfield actually makes what was already a shaky defense worse, and LA simply kicked away the last two losses to the Giants. Also, their starter Derek Lowe was terrible in his last start in St. Louis, allowing eight earned runs and 13 hits in just 3.1 innings.

Now we have never been fans of Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick, but he has now allowed two runs or less in three straight starts while going a minimum of six innings in all of them, and he has a great bullpen behind him. In fact, the Phillies rank third in the majors with a 3.15 bullpen ERA, so if Lowe struggles again and the Phillies get a quick lead, the Dodgers will have a tough time coming back.

Finally, the Phillies are on a lucrative 11-4 run as underdogs.

Pick: Phillies +120

Ben Burns

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox
Prediction: Boston Red Sox

These teams have alternated wins through the first three games of this 4-game set. The Chisox took the opener while the Bosox bounced back in Game 2. Yesterday, it was Chicago's turn again. This evening's matchup offers a solid opportunity for Boston to salvage the series split. Beckett is 3-0 (team is 4-0) in four career starts vs. the White Sox. Conversely, Danks is 0-2 with an ugly 8.68 ERA and 1.822 WHIP in two career starts vs. the Red Sox. Consider Boston
