My 1* Free Play is on the Houston Astros (8:10 EST).
I don’t normally recommend playing favorites of this size, but if you don’t mind laying chalk every now and then, I do definitely think that Justin Verlander and the defending champs are well worth the price of admission in this spot.
Verlander (1-0, 2.31 ERA) gave up four runs off six hits over 5.2 innings, while striking out nine and walking one in a no-decision against the Orioles on Tuesday (Astros ended up winning 10-6.)
The home side counters with the volatile Lance Lynn (0-1, 11.25 ERA), who was shelled for five runs off three hits and six walks over four innings in a loss to the Pirates on Monday. Lynn posted a career-high BB/9 of 3.8 last season and all early indicators point to further regression for the 31 year old.
Note that the Astros are 147-94 (+24.7 units) the last two season against right-handed starters, while the Twins are just 100-136 (-28.4 units) in the same position.
For the most part MLB handicapping comes down to the starting pitching and when trying to properly assess a starting pitcher, “recent form” is often the best indicator we have.
Recent form displayed by these two starting pitchers suggests that Lynn is in a heap of trouble. As mentioned off the top, if you don’t mind laying juice, everything points to a lop-sided blowout here.
Consider Verlander and the Astros on Monday night.
