Take the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs. There are plenty of All-Star snubs to point out this year (Russell Branyan and Nick Markakis in the American League; Adam Dunn and Jason Werth in the National League) but when it comes to pitchers (who are chosen by the coaches and not the fans) perhaps the one name that stands out the most is the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter, who pitched yesterday vs. the Cubs' Rich Harden. After all, we're talking about a former Cy Young award winner who came back this season from major surgery to put up phenomenal numbers so far, despite a short stint on the shelf with an injury. And we're also talking about a guy who has pitched the last seven seasons of his Major League career in St. Louis, the host city of this season's mid-summer Classic. In contrast, today's starter for the Cubbies, veteran Ted Lilly will not only be at the All-Star Game in St. Louis next Tuesday, but he will be the Cubs' lone representative to the game. Pretty surprising when you consider that many people picked Chicago to win its division and perhaps go much further this season. But the offense really hasn't clicked so far for Lou Piniella and company, and Lilly and his teammates will certainly have their hands full this afternoon against one of the most potent offenses in the league. The Cardinal bats are really heating up lately, and it's more than just Albert Pujols doing the damage. Rookie outfielder Colby Rasmus has been punishing the ball. Of course it doesn't hurt that LaRussa has been batting Rasmus directly in front of Pujols so he's getting some pretty good pitches thrown his way.

800♦ DETROIT TIGERS (LIST Galarraga and Pavano) - This is a great spot for Armando Galarraga, who looks as if he has regained the form that was mowing down hitters in April with precision pitches and confidence on the hill. He comes in off an impressive showing against Kansas City last Monday, when he limited the Royals to one earned run on five hits after seven innings. Quite honestly, I thought it was the best stuff he's had in a long time; unfortunately, the Tigers’ bullpen gave up the lead twice and he ended up with the no-decision.The most important thing to note from that game was how effective he was, scattering those five hits while striking out seven. He mixed in pitches well, and used a slider that was vividly better than the one he used in many of his other appearances this season. He was confident with his command, pounding the strike zone at free will. Tonight against Cleveland, he’ll have that same attitude with a revenge on the brain, not to mention confidence since it’s a club he beat three times last season.
Carl Pavano, meanwhile, comes in after just one inning of work against Oakland, which went into Cleveland and pounded the right-hander for eight hits in 6-2/3 innings. Yes, he only gave up two earned runs, but the fact is he’s been getting shelled by opponents since mid-May. Over his last five starts, Pavano has been pelted for 44 hits and 22 earned runs over 27 innings of work.Again, this is a revenge game from May 1, when the Indians and Pavano beat Galarraga and the Tigers at Comerica Park. Prior to that Galarraga was 2-0 in his four previous starts against the Tribe, as three of them were quality starts.Detroit extended its AL Central-lead to 3-1/2 games over the White Sox, who lost in Minnesota last night, and the one thing Jim Leyland stresses as a manager at this time, is not to look ahead to the break, to ride the first half out completely. A win over Cliff Lee was impressive last night, and with six straight over the Indians now on the tote board, I love the home team here and will be sure to list both pitchers for the win.

Jumper Jack

LA Angels -105 $400 The Angels are an incredible 25-5 at home in day games the last 2 years combined(7-1 this year), and they are also a perfect 9-0 the last 2 years in home day games against lefthanded starters averaging an astounding 7.56 runs/game! Jered Weaver has a 1.91 ERA at home this year, and the Angels are 7-2 in his home starts. Weaver also has a 1.12 ERA in day games, and in his only 2 daytime starts at home this year he did not allow even 1 ER in either. The Angels are 17-6 the last 23 at home against the Yankees and 11-4 against them last 15 overall. The Angels are 13-4 their last 17 games following a win, looks like the Angels go up 2-0 in the series.

This one will not be close as CLE is just realing and can't get out of there own way in last 10 games. CLE is 4-6 in last 10 games and has lost 3 of last 4 games. The big problem lately is consistent run support and really average pitching. There pitching staff has given up at least 5 runs in all of last 10 games with the worst ERA in last 10 games of any pitching staff. Pavano has been up and down all year but the last 5 he is 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA. On the other side Gallaraga has been great winning last two games going 14 innings only giving up 2 runs. DET has been
