TONY STOFFO

Nationals at Rays
Pick: Rays -153

Anytime we can get a good value price with a solid pitcher getting the start against Washington makes for a highly recommended play against the Nationals. And that's exactly what we have here as I feel that Andy Sonnanstine is rounding into his top form cycle.

Washington is 1-12 against the money line vs. good power teams - averaging 1.25 or more HR's/game this season. Tampa Bay is 31-7 against the money line as a home favorite of -150 to -175 over the last 2 seasons.

Washington is 4-23 against the money line in road games after 3 or more consecutive unders over the last 3 seasons.

Washington is 11-31 against the money line vs. a starting pitcher with good control (less than 1.75 BB's/start) over the last 2 seasons.

7* INTERLEAGUE TOTAL OF THE YEAR

Detroit / Pittsburgh Under

Zach Duke has been extremely effective this season, featuring a 3.07 ERA on the season. At home that number drops to 2.66 with a 1.09 WHIP. Duke is coming off one his worst starts of the season but in each of the three other starts where Duke has allowed more than two runs he has bounced back with an eight-plus inning effort. Duke has allowed two or fewer earned runs while pitching more than six innings eight times this season. In over 85 innings this season Duke has allowed just 20 walks and the Pittsburgh bullpen has been very respectable in the past month, including a 3.06 ERA in the past ten games.

Armando Galarraga has not been able to match the success he had last season but he has now made three straight quality starts. Galarraga allowed just six runs in four interleague starts last season. The under is 5-2 in his last seven outings and the Detroit bullpen has been greatly improved this season after being a serious problem the past two years. The under is 19-6 in the last 25 Tigers games as the pitching has been very good and the offensive production has leveled off after a hot opening month of the season.

Over the last ten games the Tigers are batting just .234 overall and on the year Detroit is hitting just .233 against left-handed pitching in road games. Pittsburgh has scored four or fewer runs in 16 of the past 22 games and the offense has been depleted with the loss of Nate McLouth. PNC Park has a reputation as a high scoring field, but that simply has not been the case, averaging just 8.4 runs per game. The under is 15-11 in Pittsburgh home games and on the year the Pirates are allowing an average of only 4.3 runs per game.

4 Unit Play. Take the Phoenix Mercury -7 over the Sacramento Monarchs

After a team like the Mercury who are 2-0 and dynamic at home and who get rocked against a Monarchs team desperate for a win, it is great to take the Mercury as they return home and look for revenge. This is the same Phoenix team that beat New York by 7 and San Antonio by 11 at home. My only worry is that the public is on Phoenix, but its all good as sometimes the public wins and the revenge angle is nice here. I can't imagine Taurasi, Pondexter, Smith and Johnson having another horrible game nor can I imagine the Monarchs shooting lights out for 90 points once again, I look for the Monarchs to have a big let down likely on the road while the Mercury bounce-back nicely at home. What's nice about home and homes is that revenge plays a major factor, and with the high potent offense of Phoenix, why not take the Suns to win by double-digits tonight. The Monarchs are 1-4 ATS following 0 days rest and the Mercury have covered their last 5 home games.

4 Unit Play. Take Under 9.5 between the LA Dodgers @ Texas Rangers

The Dodgers look to bounce-back from 0-6 loss to the Rangers yesterday. They will send Wolf to the mound who has been hit hard in his last two contests and who really needs a bounce-back today. What stinks for him is the fact Arlington is a hitter's ballpark but having said that, I have been founding the under in Texas for quite some time. In particular, when Feldman starts, I have been really going after the Under. Feldman has pitched in 9 straight Unders and we have been on at least 5 of them that I can think off my head. The young man from Hawaii is 5-1 and has dropped his era down to 4.01. Note, he had a non-quality start and I expect him to bounce-back today as I expect Wolf to bounce-back from back to back non-quality outings. So, you have two pitchers who are on bounce-back and although I think the Rangers are likely to roll once again, let's just ride the Under wave in Scott Feldman games to potentially make it 10 straight Unders for Feldman. The Under is 9-0 overall for Feldman of late and the Under is 9-2 in the Dodger's last 11 interleague games

Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh PiratesPittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh Pirates -116

I'm on the Pirates over the Tigers tonight with Zach Duke on the mound for the Bucs. Duke has been the ace of the Pittsburgh staff this season, sporting a 6-4 record, a 3.07 ERA, and a 1.20 WHIP. All of his numbers improve when he pitches in Pittsburgh, his ERA dropping to 2.66 and WHIP to 1.09 in 6 starts, where he has earned a 4-2 record. The Tigers throw Armando Galarraga, who is 3-6 on the season with an ERA over 5.00. Galarraga's struggles this year have come mostly on the road, where he is just 1-3 with a 5.20 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Pitt is tough to handle at home, where they are 15-12 this season, and behind Zach Duke they give themselves their best chance to win games.

Boston Red Sox vs Philadelphia PhilliesPhiladelphia Phillies
Philadelphia Phillies -119

The Phillies are the play in Philadelphia against the Red Sox Saturday. Daisuke Matsuzaka is still struggling this year, going 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA and a 19.8 WHIP in his last three starts, which actually improved his overall numbers on the season to 1-4 with a 7.33 ERA and a 2.11 WHIP. Until Dice-K shows he can put together a quality start, the Red Sox are going to be in trouble when he steps on the mound. The Phillies are one of the better scoring teams in baseball, averaging 5.4 runs per game. Boston walked away with Game 1 in the series with a very strong show from Jon Lester, but I doubt they will get the same support from Dice-K tonight. Take the Phillies.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Texas Rangers
Dodgers/Rangers UNDER 9.5

Similar to last night's game, this total is far too high for two teams that have really been struggling at the plate. The Dodgers are hitting just .242 as a team and averaging only 2.3 runs per game over their last 7, while the Rangers are batting only .211 as a team and averaging 3.1 runs per game over their last 7. Combine those poor hitting stats with the stats for the two starters tonight, and the under is an easy play. Dodgers starter, Randy Wolf has posted a 3.29 ERA on the road this season, while Texas' starter, Scott Feldman has just a 3.00 ERA this season at home. The Rangers won last night's game 6-0, but until both teams start putting up some runs, the smart money is on the under when these two match up.

Houston Astros vs Arizona Diamondbacks
Astros/D-Backs OVER 9.5

These typically aren't teams that score a lot of runs, but that should change tonight with two struggling pitchers on the mound. We'll start with Jon Garland, who is 0-3 in his last 3 starts with a 8.80 ERA and a WHIP over 2.00. We'll add that to Roy Oswalt, who has never really gotten it together this year, posting a 5.21 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP over his last three starts. The Over is 7-1 in Arizona's last 8 games overall and 6-3 in Houston's last 9 overall. For two teams that don't score many runs, they have a tendency to give up a lot. I'm looking for both of them to do just that tonight.

Chicago White Sox vs Milwaukee BrewersMilwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers -127
Take the Brewers tonight to beat the Chicago White Sox. We have two struggling starters on the mound, but Chicago starter, Jose Contreras, has been awful on the road this season. In 3 road starts, Contreras is 0-3 with a 10.94 ERA and a 2.07 WHIP. The Brewers start Manny Parra, who despite his overall 3-7 record, has pitched well at home, earning a 3.65 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 4 home starts this season. The White Sox have struggled this season against left-handed starters, hitting just .240 as a team and scoring only 4.1 runs per game. With their win over the White Sox last night, the Brewers are now 17-12 at home and should pick up another victory in Milwaukee over Chicago.
