Michael Cannon

Minnesota -115 at ST. LOUIS

Take the Twins for the road win over the Cardinals.

Kevin Slowey gets the start for Minnesota today and he’s established himself as the ace of the staff. The right-hander is 10-2 on the year with a 4.04 ERA. Slowey has also fared well in interleague play, going 7-1 with a 2.48 ERA in 10 career starts against the NL, including 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA this year.

Minnesota as a team has fared well in interleague play as well, particularly on the road. The Twins are 11-5 against the senior circuit this year, with a 5-2 mark on the road.

Going back further, the Twins have won 25 of 35 interleague games away from home since June, 2005.

St. Louis has lost three straight, scoring just three runs during that slide. The Cardinals are hitting a woeful .206 as a team in losing four of their last five.

Todd Wellemeyer will start for the Cards and he’s just 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA in five June starts.

Take the Twins as they grab the road win.

4♦ MINNESOTA

1 OF WUNDERDOG MLB RUN LINE PLAYS

Game: Minnesota at St. Louis (1:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: St. Louis +1.5 runs -160 (runline)

The Minnesota Twins will go with Kevin Slowey this afternoon against the Cardinals’ Todd Wellemeyer. Solwey has a deck full of aces so far as he is 10-2 on the season despite an average ERA of 4.04. It is because the Twins have scored 5+ runs in 70% of his starts, which is considerably above what this team has done on the season. Slowey has not been good on the road, where despite the run support, the Twins are 1-3 in his last four road starts - pitching to a 5.06 ERA. The Twins have struggled to a 14-22 mark on the road this season, and when favored, are just 2-9. The Cards have struck big in interleague play against right-hand pitching where they stand 37-15 over their last 52 in this situation. Getting a run and a half against a team that has struggled on the road and a pitcher with misleading numbers, against a team cashing big in this spot has a ton of value. That puts me on the runline with the Cards.

The hot Los Angeles Angels have won 10 of 13 games overall and are 12-4 in interleague play. To boot, right-hander John Lackey has gone 7-0 with a 2.54 ERA in his last nine starts against NL opponents. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are struggling. Arizona has dropped their last three games and nine of 12 overall. Go with the Angels to win their fifth straight road game. The Diamondbacks have lost their last 4 interleague home games.

The battle for the windy city takes place on the south side again today. The Cubs R. Dempster in 9 road starts has gone under 6 times. CWS M.Buehrle in 8 home starts has gone under 6 times. The two are 12-5 Under. The CWS are 26-9 Under when the total is between 8.5 to 10 runs. UNDER 8.5

I'll back the Halos this afternoon against the struggling D-backs, who have lost 6 of 7 and 9 of 12. The Angels are starting to get things together, having won 3 in a row and 10 of 13. The Angels are swinging hot bats right now, having scored 23 runs in their last 2 games, and I look for the sticking to continue against Davis here as the Diamondbacks are just 2-8 in Davis' last 10 starts. Lackey has not been at his best this season, but the Angels are still 4-0 in his last 4 starts as a road favorite, 12-3 in his last 15 starts as a road favorite of -110 to -150, and 16-5 in his last 21 interleague starts. Bet the Halos.

Todd Wellemeyer is having a rough season. He has allowed 107 hits in just 86 1/3 innings. His 1.66 WHIP means the Twins should have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs this afternoon. His velocity is down and he's had just one Quality Start in his last nine outings. On the flip side, Kevin Slowey has pitched very well. His 29/3 K/BB ratio on the road this season is very impressive to say the least. Both teams will be facing today's opposing starter for the first time. But the way these two hurlers have been performing, I have to give the edge to the Twins.

Buehrle has been super here at home. Dempster has thrown well over his last 3 games and appears to be in very good form. Both teams are getting good Bullpen work and both teams playing a lot of UNDERS right now. Both Pens are right at the 3 run mark over their last 10 games. The Cubbies are not scoring runs on the road and especially verses lefties as they have only managed a .205 batting average in this situation. The Homeplate Ump is certainly on our side for this play if you look at what he has done so far this season. His games have featured just over 7.9 runs per contest, he is 8-4 UNDER the Posted Totals and his K/BB ratios is more than 2-1. In fact, throwers have average right at 16 K's per game in the one's that he has worked. Over the last 9, Buerhle thrown games have gone UNDER this total 8 times, once just 9 runs in the contest and barely over, and 11-3 Overall this year toward the UNDER. Dempster is currently on a 5-0 UNDER streak, the Cubs are 15-5 UNDER last 20 road games, and the WhiteSox are 20-6 UNDER last 26 here at this park. In addition, UNDER is 9-3 last 12 here when these teams have met. All in all it looks like we are trending for another lower than usual scoring contest today and I will play along.

NY YANKEES vs. NY METS
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
The New York Yankees look to capture the season series from NY Mets(37-35) as they will have captain Derek Jeter back in the in the lineup tonight. Jeter had four hits and scored four runs in his last game which was Thursday against Atlanta. The Yankee bats have been very productive in this series as Alex Rodriguez moved into 11th place on the all-time homers list with his 564th on Friday, and Brett Gardner added a career-high five hits as the Yankees won their third straight and improved to 3-1 against the Mets. Fot the Mets, Gary Sheffield was back to the lineup Friday and homered after he missed the last four games. A.J. Burnett (5-4, 4.24 ERA) will try to defeat the Mets for the second time this season. In his first outing, he yielded four singles over seven innings in a 15-0 victory to improve to 3-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 17 career starts against the Mets. The right-hander is 1-2 in three interleague starts after losing 2-1 last Saturday in Florida. Burnett gave up two runs over 6 1/3 innings.Tim Redding (1-2, 6.08) starts for the Mets who is winless in his last seven interleague starts, going 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two outings versus the AL this year, and will face the Yankees for the first time.Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira has four doubles and three walks in nine career at-bats against Redding. The Mets have seen Burnett already this year and will have more success today against hime although the struggling Tim Redding won't last long against this hot Yankee offense.

A night after another winning performance from their ace, the Brewers will give Seth McClung his first shot in the rotation this season as they continue a three-game set Saturday afternoon with the visiting San Francisco Giants. McClung (3-1, 3.24 ERA) will try to snap that skid as he makes his first start of 2009. With Dave Bush(notes) going on the disabled list earlier this week and the struggling Manny Parra demoted to Triple-A Nashville, that left McClung, who started 12 games last season, as the obvious choice. Although Zito has pitched well lately his team is a horrible 2-5 (-2.8 units) as a road dog of +100 to +125 and I expect this trend to continue tonight; play on the BREWERS!

Take Over 143 between New York Liberty @ Indina Fever

Long story short however, it is always sound to take the Over when a home team comes off a loss on a home and home. Hence, when they head on the road, they are likely to be an active dog and push the total over. These two teams popped 136 in regulation in New York, but bear in mind that came off the heels of the Fever scoring 7 points in the first quarter. Then, they put up 48 just in the second half alone (on pace for 96) in wnba games - or a total of 192 ifwhen added to a score of another team that is competitive with them. Given that we expect New York to have revenge and be competitive on the road, this total is likely to be pushed over. I look for McCarville and Moore to have big games today and Shameka Christon to have big games today. The Over is 5-1 in the Fever's last 6 home games and the Over is 4-0 when the Liberty facse a team with a straight up winning record.
