Dave Malinsky 4*

Detroit Tigers @ Boston Red Sox
PICK: Under

We have been watching this one slowly climb all day, and now that we can play Under 11 at a fair price it is time to pull the trigger, in a game in which the market is projecting far more than should be called for from these offenses right now.

The Tigers finally managed to get a win yesterday, but it was anything but a break-out offensively. They only scored in one of the first seven innings, that being a four-run outburst vs. Jon Lester in the 4th that was as much a result as his own wildness (two of the runners that scored had walked) than their own swings. And when they broke it open late, it was because Terry Francona had gone to the bottom of his bullpen rotation in David Aardsma, Bryan Corney, Julian Tavarez and Javier Lopez in an “audition” setting - one of them will have to be sent down later this week when Mike Timlin is activated. Only Edgar Renteria had more than one hit on the evening, and now they have to adjust to the knuckler of Tim Wakefield, despite only seeing him for seven innings in all of 2007. And behind Wakefield it will be the Okajima/Papelbon duo ready to go, after sitting out last night, instead of the lower rungs of the Boston pen.

But the offensive equation does not just fail for Detroit. The Red Sox have been very slow to get going as well, and this is not their break-out spot either. With Mike Lowell sidelined they are forced to add a left-handed bat to the order in Sean Casey, despite facing lefty Nate Robertson, and with Wakefield pitching it also means that the bat of Jason Varitek is replaced with that of Kevin Cash. And while the .091 of David Ortiz is going to end at some point, Robertson is hardly his favorite guy to face - he sits at an ugly 3-19 lifetime, with no home runs, vs. the Tiger left-hander.

They are calling for a slugfest here that can not be justified with the form of these two lineups.

BEST BET: St. Louis (-130) OVER SAN FRANCISCO (120): Adam Wainwright takes the hill for the Cardinals and as the de facto ace of the team, has the decided edge against the inexperienced Kevin Correia for SF. Giants are also 3-11 in their last 14 against lefties and their offense is already the worst in the majors.

STRONG OPINION: Atlanta (-120) OVER COLORADO ROCKIES: Colorado is coming in with three straight wins while the Braves are off three straight losses. Time for a rebound as Bobby Cox's crew sends out ace Tim Hudson to face Rockies ace Jeff Francis. Atlanta plays well behind Hudson as they are 14-6 in his last 20 starts and he has been nearly unhittable this season. A ground ball pitcher, Hudson wont be affected much in the thin air. Francis on the other hand had been pitching batting practice and more of the same should be in store here.

STRONG OPINION: PITTSBURGH PIRATES (120) OVER Chicago Cubs (-130): The underdog is a live play as they are trying to avoid a three game home sweep against the Cubs and the motivation factor here is always a nice money play which hit at 61 percent last season. Ride the Pirates to stave off the embaressing run.

Chicago Cubs -140

Lefty Rich Hill put forth a solid effort in his first start of the season against the Astros last week, but he was once again let down by his offense and took the no decision in the 4-3 setback. He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. In five career starts against the Pirates, Hill is 2-1 and has only surrendered 29 hits in 32+ innings of work. The Cubs lost both of his PNC starts last season.

Matt Morris got abused in his first start of the season against Florida. He allowed Marlins hitters to tag him for eight hits and four runs (three earned), while throwing 98 pitches in just five innings of work. He has however held his own against the Cubs in his career going 12-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 27 career starts. Both games he threw against them last year were of the higher scoring variety, and that trend might continue tonight with the way he looked in Florida.

The Pirates are 2-5 SU their L/7 games against a left-handed starter, and as an underdog with Morris on the mound. The Cubs have won five in a row against the Buccos dating back to last season, but they’re a poor 2-5 SU in Rich Hill’s L/7 starts as a road favorite. That said, look for the lefty to continue his fine form against the Buccos and pick up his first win of the season be going deep into this one....

LAL Over 208 2* TOTAL WAGER

Allright Guys, I wanted to make sure that I get this up into the System and the Package because I expect the Sharps to get down on this and send out a Buy-Order early...although the possibility of this one going down later in the day is present based on the fact that I feel the Public should support the Under in this TNT Match-Up...I see no reason to risk it and hold out because 208 is an even better number than we had hoped for

10 Dime –

PHILLIES (With Eaton as listed pitcher)

Take the Phillies as the big road dog tonight over the Mets.

Look, I know it’s the Mets and they’re playing at home, but Johan Santana isn’t pitching and it’s not like they’re playing the Pirates.

So why the inflated price?

Who knows? Probably because the linesmaker gives this team way too much respect right now.

Realistically speaking, I’m aware that John Maine is a solid pitcher and he’s delivered a 4-0 record against the Phillies in his career, but this is still a kid who’s just three games over .500 for his career and going against a pretty good lineup tonight.

The Phillies can mash with the best of them. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are two of the better hitters in the National League, so I’m not opposed to backing them in any way tonight.

Then you’ve got Adam Eaton getting the start. Eaton isn’t just some journeyman pitcher when it comes to facing the Mets. The right-hander is 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA in seven career games against New York.

These teams are too even for the price to be this lopsided, so I have no problem siding with Philly.

Take the Phillies at a nice return for the road win.

5 Dime

TWINS (With Hernandez and Contreras as listed pitchers)

Take the Twins as the road dog tonight over the White Sox.

The ChiSox suffered their first home loss last night and it wouldn’t surprise me to see No. 2 come tonight.

Jose Contreras gets the nod for Chicago and there’s been concern about his velocity going back to last season. He looked shaky in his first start of the season, allowing four earned runs and walking four in five innings.

His mound opponent, Livan Hernandez, has been excellent for the Twins, going 2-0 with a 3.85 ERA in two starts. He hasn’t walked a batter yet while working seven innings in each of those two starts.

Hernandez is a horse who should be ready to deliver an even longer outing tonight if needed, while Contreras will be lucky to last more than five innings.

Take the Twins as the road dog for the win.

Sports Lock

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers

The battle of two L.A. teams heading in two different directions takes place at the Staples Center tonight. The Lakers are still very much in the hunt for the #1 seed in the west as they are only 2 games back. The Clippers however sit at 22-55 in what has become a season to forget. The Lakers simply have too much talent and too much to play for the Clippers to compete. Gasol and Odom will dominate the boards as the Lakers exploit their rebounding advantage as they are averaging 44 a game. Even though it is at the Staples Center, it is still considered an away game for the Lakers and the cover well on the road. This season they are 26-13-1 ATS away. The Lakers will pull ahead early and not look back.

Lock - Los Angeles -15
