Oakland (Eveland) ''pick'em'' over Tampa Bay (Sonnanstine)

The Athletics have tapered off a bit in recent days, but the match-up against the Rays today could not be more favorable. Dana Eveland checks in with a solid 3.23 ERA in his first nine starts, and should dispatch, without difficulty, a Tampa Bay lineup that has been ineffective vs. southpaws, averaging a mere 3.8 runs per game. For all their woes, Oakland is still a solid money-maker vs. righthanders (17-12, +$705, 5.2 runs per game). Look for them to get on track with a victory today.

Texas at Minnesota OVER 9.5

When one side is throwing Sidney Ponson, there is only one way to think. When the other side is throwing a rookie who, after 9 starts, has a Batting Average Against of .305, there is only one way to go.

San Antonio at LA Lakers UNDER 196.5

Spurs hit 11 three-pointers to get here. Long-armed Laker length on the perimeter figures to drastically reduce the number of attempts and makes from that range, forcing the Spurs to suck up the clock waiting to get the ball into Tim Duncan. LA LAKERS, 99-90.

Chicago Cubs/Houston Over 10 +1.01 (3 Unit Play)

I had a winner yesterday with the Cubs and Astros going Under the total but I am coming back today and making an opposite play on the Over tonight. The Cubs and specifically Aramis Ramirez have had pretty good success against Shawn Chacon over the years as Ramirez has hit 5 HR's against him and batted .588 against him. Chacon is only 1-4 with an 6.69 ERA in 15 career appearances against the Cubs and he has started the season with nine straight no decisions. Meanwhile the Cubs are handing the ball to Sean Gallagher who has only pitched 4 innings on the road so far this year and is taking on an Astro team that has a lot of hot hitters over the past month. The HP umpire is Joe West and so far this year he is 6-2 to the Over and the Cubs have went 6-4 to the Over in West's last 10 behind the plate while the Astros are 6-3-1 to the Over. Two potent offenses with two mediocre pitchers in a hitter's ballpark adds up to runs and an Over play for me.

Today's Pick: COLORADO ROCKIES

Look for Colorado to grab the final game of this series. San Francisco starter Sanchez has been bombed on the road all year sporting a hefty 9.45 ERA. Colorado wins in a Romp!

TAKE COLORADO.

Arizona D-Backs vs. Florida Marlins
Play: Arizona D-Backs

Brandon Webb has started this season winning his first 9 starts! Webb goes for his 10th straight to open the season tonight in Florida, a feat that has not been accomplished since 1919. Webb is 9 - 0, 2.56 ERA, he is even better on the road going 4 - 0 with a 1.33 ERA. Webb won his only start vs. Florida this year going seven scoreless. Ricky Nolasco has the stuff for the Marlins, but is consistently inconsistent. Nolasco is 2 - 3 for the season 5.18 ERA, both of his wins came on the road, at home Ricky is 0 - 2 with a 7.20 ERA. Mr. A's

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have won eight of the last 11 games against the Angels and the last four of right-hander Shaun Marcum last 4 starts. Marcum is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two career starts against Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Angels have dropped four of their last 5 games on the road and have lost 8 of the last 11 meetings in Toronto. Los Angeles will send right-hander Jon Garland to the hill. The right-hander has been sucessful versus the Blue Jays. He is 9-2 with a 4.15 ERA in 15 career games (13 starts), 5-0 with a 4.47 ERA in nine games in Toronto. Take the under. Both offenses are playing below par and with Garland and Marcum on the mound, expect a low scoring contest.

Under - 8½

GINA

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

San Antonio has lost the last two meetings at the Staples Center and is a horrible 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games away from home. They are 6-0 at home thus far in this year's playoffs, but just 2-4 on the road. Meanwhile, Los Angeles is 5-0 at home and 3-2 on the road in this year's playoffs.

The Lakers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and the home team has covered the spread in four of the last 5 meetings. Go with Kobe and his troops at home tonight in Game 1 against Duncan and his boys. This series should be a see-saw and perhaps the home team will continue to be the victor in this postseason battle.

Los Angeles Lakers - 7

Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees

Baltimore's lefthander Garrett Olson (3-0, 3.47 ERA) allowed three runs and nine hits over five innings in his last start on Friday in a 5-3 win against Washington. He has never faced the Yankees.

New York's right-hander Darrell Rasner allowed two runs over six innings in a 5-2 win at Detroit in his last start on May 10. He is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA, in two career starts against the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles have won eight of their last 10 games, including yesterday’s 12-2 beating of New York at Yankee Stadium and are 4-1 in their last 5 road games, while New York has lost five of their last six at home.

Go with hot Orioles to grab another victory against the struggling Yankees. New York’s bats have gone lifeless.

Baltimore Orioles + 135

LARRY NESS

New York Mets @ Atlanta Braves
PICK: Atlanta Braves

REASON FOR PICK: The Braves swept a doubleheader from the Mets on Tuesday and are now a ML-best 18-5 at home, while owning a ML-worst road mark of 6-16. The Mets took two games at Yankee Stadium last weekend but enter this game just 10-12 (minus-$350) on the road this year, after going 47-34 (plus-$1,193) last year, which made them MLB's biggest "money-makers" on the road. The starters tonight are Mike Pelfrey and Jair Jurrjens. Pelfrey made 15 appearances (13 starts) for the Mets last year, going 3-8 with a 5.58 ERA (team was 4-9). He has not been any better this year, as he comes in with an 0-4 mark in his last five starts, while allowing 39 hits and 17 ERs in 29 innings (5.28 ERA). The Mets have lost all five of those starts and in his only two road starts this year (at Arizona ad Philly), Pelfrey has allowed 19 hits and nine ERs over 10 innings (8.10 ERA). Considering Atlanta is 18-6 at home (averaging 5.83 RPPG), the Mets look to be staring at another loss tonight. Jair Jurrjens starts for Atlanta and the former Tiger has been terrific for Atlanta, especially at home. He lost his ML debut for Detroit last year but then went 3-0 over his final six starts of '07, with the Tigers winning each game (5-0 at home). He's 4-3 with a 2.82 ERA in nine starts this year for the Braves (team is 5-4) but that breaks down to 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA in five road starts (1-4) but 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA in four home starts (4-0). Enough said. Take the Braves.
