Los Angeles Clippers waive forward Ruben Patterson
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES -- The Clippers waived forward Ruben Patterson on Thursday, hours after he helped them beat the Nets in New Jersey for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Patterson and Tim Thomas led a 16-5 run that put the Clippers ahead for good in the third quarter of Wednesday night's 91-82 victory.

Patterson signed with the Clippers as a free agent Aug. 29. He made five starts in 20 games this season, averaging 5.1 points and 3.2 assists.

The Clippers have been beset by injuries. Elton Brand is still recovering from an offseason Achilles' injury, Sam Cassell has missed seven consecutive games with a calf injury, and Quinton Ross sustained a lower back bruise when he fell in the third quarter Wednesday.

The Clippers play the Grizzlies on Friday.

Hawks' Horford suspended for flagrant foul on Ford
ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- Atlanta Hawks forward Al Horford was suspended for one game by the NBA on Thursday for a flagrant foul against Toronto's T.J. Ford.

Ford was injured when Horford struck him on the head and knocked him down as Ford was trying to score on a breakaway with 1:32 left in the game Tuesday night. Horford, ejected for a flagrant foul penalty two, said he was trying to block Ford's shot.

Ford was released from an Atlanta hospital Wednesday and flew home to Toronto. Ford spent the night in Piedmont Hospital for observation and tests.

The Hawks play Detroit on Friday night.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans center Melvin Ely has a fractured left eye socket that will keep him out of the lineup when the Hornets play at Dallas on Friday night.

Ely was hurt when he was elbowed by the Nuggets' Kenyon Martin during the second quarter of the Hornets' 105-99 loss in Denver on Wednesday night.

A Hornets spokesman said Thursday that a timetable for Ely's return will be set following further examination.

Hornets guard Morris Peterson (back) and forward Peja Stojakovic (groin) are questionable for Friday night's game against the Mavericks.

Atlanta (10-11 SU and ATS) at Detroit (15-7 SU, 12-9-1 ATS)

The Pistons look to beat the Hawks for the third time already this season when they welcome Atlanta to the Palace at Auburn Hills.

Detroit edged the Hawks 92-91 back on Nov. 4 but failed to cover the 7½-point spread, and then followed that up with a 106-95 win in Atlanta 10 days ago, getting the cash as a six-point chalk. The Pistons have dominated the Hawks lately, going 8-2 SU. However, despite the most recent result, Atlanta has been cashing tickets, going 6-2 ATS since February 2006, all as an underdog.

Since losing to Detroit earlier this month, the Hawks have won three of four overall (2-2 ATS), the one blemish being Tuesday’s 100-88 setback to Toronto as a three-point home ‘dog. Atlanta is also 3-1 SU and ATS in its last four on the highway, including Monday’s 98-87 upset of the Magic as 10½-point pups.

The Pistons return home off an 80-77 loss in Houston on Wednesday, pushing as three-point underdogs. Even with the horrible offensive effort against the Rockets, Detroit has topped the century mark in six of its last nine games, going 7-2 SU along the way (7-1-1 ATS).

The under is 10-1 in Atlanta’s last 11 road games, 10-2 in its last 12 overall and 10-4 in the Pistons’ last 14 Friday tip-offs. However the over is 6-3 in the last nine head-to-head matchups between these two.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

New Orleans (14-8 SU, 11-10-1 ATS) at Dallas (14-9 SU, 9-14 ATS)

Two weeks after these two slugged it out in an overtime game in New Orleans, the Hornets and Mavericks meet again in Dallas.

New Orleans outlasted the Mavs 112-108 as a three-point underdog on Dec. 3, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Mavericks. Neither team has really had the upper hand getting the cash lately, with Dallas holding a slight 4-2-1 ATS advantage in the last seven.

The Hornets have won four of their last six overall, but are just 1-3 ATS in their last four. The one spread-cover came on Wednesday in Denver, where New Orleans lost 105-99 as eight-point ‘dogs.

New Orleans is 16-5-2 ATS in its last 23 road games, including 7-3 ATS on the highway this season.

The Mavs, who are coming off Wednesday 92-76 loss at Toronto as four-point favorites, are mired in slumps of 4-7 SU and 4-11 ATS. Dallas split its last two home games, falling to Denver 122-109 as an 8½-point chalk and beating Utah 125-117 as a 5½-point favorite.

At home, Dallas puts up 107.2 points a game and shoots 48.7 percent from the field. However, Avery Johnson’s club is surrendering 101.1 ppg in front of the home fans on 47 percent shooting.

The under is 13-5 in New Orleans’ last 18 overall and 7-2-1 in the last 10 series meetings. However, the over is on runs of 8-2-1 for the Hornets against Southwest Division rivals, 7-2 for Dallas against the Western Conference and 20-8 for the Mavs at home (9-2 “over” at home this season).

ATS ADVANTAGE: NEW ORLEANS

L.A. Lakers (13-8 SU, 12-9 ATS) at Golden State (12-10 SU, 11-11 ATS)

The Lakers head up the California coast, where they hope to continue their dominance over the Warriors in a Western Conference showdown.

Los Angeles has won nine straight overall against Golden State (6-3 ATS), including four consecutive wins and covers at Oracle Arena in Oakland. In the first meeting between these two this season on Sunday, the Lakers scored a 123-113 win as three-point home favorites.

The Lakers are riding a four-game winning streak (3-1 ATS) into this one, and have scored at least 111 points three of the four games. Thursday, Los Angeles beat the Tim Duncan-less Spurs 102-97 in the Staples Center, but the Lakers failed to cover as 6 ½-point favorites.

Los Angeles has followed up a three-game SU and ATS slide on the road with consecutive road victories over Minnesota (116-95) and Denver (111-107). The straight-up winner has covered the spread in all nine road games for the Lakers, who average 106.4 ppg on the highway and shoot 48.3 percent from the floor, but allow 105.3 ppg (44.6 percent).

Golden State fell to 7-3 SU (6-4 ATS) in its last 10 after Wednesday’s 105-95 loss in Portland as a four-point chalk. The last time the Warriors were at home, they beat the Tim Duncan-less Spurs 96-84 as 2½-point favorites.

The Warriors light up the scoreboard at home, averaging 112.4 ppg while allowing 107.2. They’re 6-1 in their last seven at Oracle Arena (5-2 ATS), the only setback being a six-point overtime loss to the Magic on Dec. 3. Also, the straight-up winner is 9-2 ATS in Golden State’s 11 home contests.

Golden State is 7-2 ATS in its last nine divisional games.

Offense hasn’t been in short supply in this series, as the winner has topped the century mark in every game since 2005. Not surprisingly, the over is 19-7 in the last 26 head-to-head meetings. The over is also on runs of 8-3 for the Lakers on the road, 9-4 for the Lakers on Friday, 8-3 for the Warriors at home and 7-1 for the Warriors against Pacific Division rivals.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OVER
