Friday's Tip Sheet
By Chris David

After taking last Friday off for the All-Star break, the NBA returns with a monster 13-game card. As always, stay abreast with our Injury Report and Player Updates before making a vested wager.

Also, you can bet that a few players will be unavailable on Friday due to the Trade Deadline too.

Without further adieu, let’s break ‘em down!

Must-See Games

Houston (33-20 straight up, 28-24 against the spread) at New Orleans (37-15 SU, 33-19 ATS): The Southwest Division is easily the toughest in the NBA, with four teams in the thick of the Wild Wild Western Conference. The Hornets dropped the Rockets 87-82 as a one-point underdog on Jan. 13 at Toyota Center. Houston was without Tracy McGrady in this loss and still held a five-point lead heading into the final quarter before losing. New Orleans has had Houston’s number recently, going 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings. Both Houston (9-0 SU, 7-2 ATS) and New Orleans (5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) enter this contest on a roll. The Rockets will be playing their second game in two nights after hosting Miami on Thursday. The Rockets are 6-6 SU and 7-5 ATS on zero days rest. The ‘under’ has gone 7-5. Houston has produced a 17-11 SU and 16-12 ATS record on the road, while New Orleans owns a solid 18-8 SU and 15-11 ATS ledger in the Big Easy.

Boston (41-11 SU, 30-19 ATS) at Phoenix (37-17 SU, 23-29 ATS): The Celtics and Suns meet in a possible NBA Finals preview on Friday in a nationally televised (ESPN, 10:35 p.m. EST) from the desert. After winning its first 16 games against the Western Conference, Boston has dropped back-to-back setbacks to Denver (124-118) and Golden State (119-117). The Celtics are still dangerous on the road, going 18-7 SU and 14-9 ATS. Phoenix owns a 20-7 SU record at home, but has hurt backers with a 10-17 ATS mark. The Suns are averaging 112 points per game at US Airways Center, helping the ‘over’ go 17-9. Phoenix has won four straight (2-2 ATS) against Boston, but this will be the first meeting this year. The Suns are an eye opening 21-2 SU versus the Eastern Conference.

Eastern Wars

Washington (25-28 SU, 30-22 ATS) at Cleveland (30-24 SU, 25-29 ATS): The Wizards and Cavaliers will meet for the third time this year in a nationally televised battle on ESPN at 8:00 p.m. EST. The season series is all square at 1-1, with the home team winning and covering both games by double-digits. The ‘over’ is 2-0. Gamblers should be aware that Washington is 15-10 ATS on the road and the Cavs are 8-17 ATS at home.

New Jersey (24-30 SU, 21-33 ATS) at Indiana (21-33 SU, 25-29 ATS): New Jersey has won seven straight games against Indiana, covering six of the seven as well. Friday’s matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams. The ‘over’ has gone 6-1 during the Nets’ dominance during this stretch. Tough to handicap this one, with NJ going 11-5 SU and 12-14 ATS on the road and Indy owning an inconsistent 10-16 SU and 12-14 ATS mark at home.

Philadelphia (24-31 SU, 28-24 ATS) at Orlando (34-22 SU, 33-21 ATS): Orlando nipped Philadelphia 108-106 on Feb. 1, but failed to cover as a 4½-point road favorite. The Magic have notched three in a row against the Sixers, including February’s win. This contest is also hard to gauge, considering Philadelphia has been down on the road (9-17 SU, 13-12 ATS) and Orlando’s home mark (14-11 SU, 12-11 ATS) isn’t exactly off the charts.

Road Favorites

Toronto (29-23 SU, 29-22 ATS) at New York (16-38 SU, 26-27 ATS): The Raptors have been steady on the road, going 13-12 SU and 13-11 ATS. One of those victories came on Jan. 11 when the Raptors topped the Knicks 99-90 as five-point favorites. New York is hoping to rebound from a 40-point (124-84) loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Knicks are 10-17 SU and 11-16 ATS at Madison Square Garden. The ‘under’ has gone 4-1 in the past five meetings between the two teams.

Dallas (35-19 SU, 21-30 ATS) at Memphis (14-40 SU, 22-31 ATS): Jason Kidd had his debut with the Mavericks spoiled on Wednesday when the team fell to New Orleans, 104-93. Dallas is 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in its last six games, which includes back-to-back road defeats. Memphis started the second half with consecutive losses away from home both SU and ATS. The Mavs have won 14 straight games against the Grizzlies, going 10-4 ATS during this stretch.

Utah (35-19 SU, 29-23 ATS) at L.A. Clippers (18-33 SU, 23-28 ATS): The Jazz look to extend their winning streak to four games on Friday when they visit Los Angeles. Utah has won all three of its last games by double digits. The Clippers are off a 100-86 victory against Memphis on Wednesday as eight-point favorites. Los Angles has watched the ‘under’ go 31-20 on the season, which includes its current 4-0 run. Utah has won and covered both meetings against L.A. this year, including a 109-93 win on Jan. 21 as a three-point road favorite. The total has gone 1-1.

Non-Conference Battles

Sacramento (25-28 SU, 30-23 ATS) at Charlotte (19-35 SU, 22-31 ATS): The Kings ripped the Bobcats 105-91 on Jan. 30 as a 7½-point home favorite. The home team has won the past five meetings between Sacramento and Charlotte, while the ‘over’ has gone 4-1 during this span. Fifteen of the Bobcats’ 19 wins have come at home this year and seven of the victories are against the Western Conference.

Denver (33-20 SU, 28-25 ATS) at Chicago (21-32 SU, 22-31 ATS):
The Nuggets are 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in their last three battles against the Bulls, including a 112-91 blowout win on Nov. 12 as an 8½ point home favorite. The ‘over’ has gone 3-0 in all three games. Denver has been outscored 108-104 on the road en route to an inconsistent 11-14 record both SU and ATS. Chicago is a dismal 11-14 SU and 9-16 ATS at home this year.

Atlanta (22-30 SU, 24-26 ATS) at Golden State (33-21 SU, 23-29 ATS): Atlanta has won and covered three straight against Golden State, but this will be the first meeting between the two this year. The ‘over’ is 3-0 in the last three contests. The Hawks are mired in a six-game (1-5 ATS) losing streak. The Warriors are 4-1 SU in their last five, but only 1-4 ATS.

Timberwolves trade Gerald Green to Rockets for Kirk Snyder
February 21, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The Minnesota Timberwolves traded seldom-used swingman Gerald Green to the Houston Rockets on Thursday for shooting guard Kirk Snyder.

Minnesota also gets a second-round pick in 2010 and cash.

Green is a Houston native who was taken out of high school by Boston in 2005. He's averaging a little more than five points and two rebounds in scant playing time. He will be a free agent after this season.

Snyder has played in just nine games this season. He's averaging almost four points.

Raptors acquire Brezec from Pistons for Dixon
February 21, 2008

TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Raptors acquired center Primoz Brezec from the Detroit Pistons on Thursday for guard Juan Dixon and cash considerations.

Dixon was averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 assists in 36 games with Toronto this season, his second with the Raptors.

Dixon joined Toronto from Portland last year in a trade deadline deal that sent swingman Fred Jones to the Trail Blazers. Dixon asked Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo to explore trade options after he lost playing time to newcomers Carlos Delfino, Jason Kapono and Jamario Moon.

Toronto will be Brezec's third team this season. The 7-foot-1 Slovenian began the year with Charlotte but was traded to Detroit along with Walter Herrmann in a Dec. 14 deal that sent Nazr Mohammed to the Bobcats.

Brezec, who played alongside Toronto's Rasho Nesterovic for Slovenia at the 2006 world championships, is averaging 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 37 games this season.

Is Saint Mary's for real?
By Matt Fargo

We knew coming in that St. Mary’s was going to be a good team and possibly challenge Gonzaga for the West Coast Championship. We just weren’t sure how good. The Gaels finished 17-15 last season but they came into this year with four returning starters including six of their top seven scorers, 75 percent of their scoring offense and 80 percent of their rebounds from a year ago. The big concern was filling the void at point guard but that has not been an issue.

Freshman Patrick Mills won the starting job as floor general and he not only leads the team in assists but is also the Gaels leading scorer at 15.2 ppg. His presence keeps defenses on their toes as it is the frontcourt that is the real strength of this team. WCC Player of the Year Candidate Diamon Simpson is second in scoring with 12.3 ppg and the leading rebounder with 9.3 per game. The next two top scorers are also down low as Omar Samhan and Ian O’Leary average a combined 19.9 ppg and 12.3 rpg.

St. Mary’s is off to its best start since 1988-89 when it went 22-3 through its first 25 games. The Gaels have been able to dominate on their home court, going a perfect 14-0 and they have won 16 straight games at McKeon Pavilion dating back to last season. There have been some impressive wins along with including a rout of then 12th ranked Oregon as well as a six-point win over Drake and we know what the Bulldogs have accomplished this season. The biggest however was an overtime victory over Gonzaga.

Taking care of the home floor is one thing but winning the big games on the road is what makes teams great. St. Mary’s is 5-3 in true road games but it has not defeated anyone of real significance. A victory at Fresno St. was nice but blowout losses at Southern Illinois and Texas brings up some question about whether the Gaels can win the “big one” on the road. St. Mary’s is 4-1 on the road in the WCC but the conference is extremely weak and the lone challenge came against San Diego, the lone conference loss.

It seems as though when the Gaels enter the top 25 polls, they end up losing. St. Mary’s slipped into the top 25 way back on December 10th, entering for the first time at No. 24. The next night was the night the Gaels lost to Southern Illinois and it took them close to two months to re-enter the polls and it was that same night it lost to San Diego. St. Mary’s did not drop out that time however and it currently is 23rd in the nation with three huge games on tap.

Four games remain on the schedule but it is the first three that are worth noting. The first comes this Saturday as the Gaels host Kent St. in one of the numerous Bracket Buster games taking place. It is big considering a win would be the 7th top 60 RPI victory on the season and that goes a long way come tournament seeding time. Following that is the final home game of the season in a revenge game against San Diego on Monday. The conference championship will then come down to the next game on Saturday at Gonzaga.

The game against the Bulldogs is huge not just for the regular season title. It would add yet another quality win to the column. Consider just how weak the West Coast Conference really is. St. Mary’s was ranked 20th in the RPI prior to its game at Loyola-Marymount last Saturday. Despite winning that game by 31 points, the Gales dropped to 27th in the RPI which happened to be its lowest ranking of the season. After the 36-point win over Pepperdine on Monday, St. Mary’s stayed at 27th.

A victory at Gonzaga, who is currently ranked 39th in the RPI, will move St. Mary’s up again. It will also give the Gaels their first real quality road victory of the season and prove that they can get it done on the road. St. Mary’s is 14-8-1 ATS on the season which is good for a top 20 ranking. This includes a 6-5-1 ATS mark in road and neutral court games. After starting 5-5-1 ATS, the Gaels have gone 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games and look to keep that momentum rolling.

The Gaels are ranked 29th in scoring offense and 46th in scoring defense so they have gotten it done on both ends of the floor which is a main ingredient for good tournament teams. One big issue against them is that they are hitting 66.7 percent from the free throw line which is 246th in the nation. That will need to improve come tournament time. St. Mary’s has what it takes to make some noise and the Gonzaga game will tell us a lot in how far it might be able to go.
