Pacers F O'Neal calls sitting out season with knee injury 'worst-case scenario'

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal called sitting out the season with a bruised left knee a ``worst-case scenario'' and refused to put a timetable on his return.
``I don't know when I'm coming back,'' O'Neal said before Monday's game against Philadelphia.
The Pacers said Saturday that O'Neal would miss at least two weeks. And O'Neal acknowledged before the game that he might have rushed back too soon from offseason knee surgery.
``Missing the season is a worst-case scenario,'' O'Neal said Monday.
But he told The Indianapolis Star for Monday's edition that he was willing to sit out the rest of the season, calling it the ``prime option for me.''
O'Neal planned to visit specialists in New York or Los Angeles for additional evaluation.
Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said he expected O'Neal to return and help Indiana chase the final East playoff spot. Indiana (18-23) began Monday a half-game behind New Jersey (18-22) for eighth in the Eastern Conference standings.
``Our medical people think it's a minimum of two weeks,'' O'Brien said. ``They fully expect him to play this year.''
A six-time All-Star, O'Neal is averaging 15.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks this season, but he has missed eight games and barely practiced the last two or three weeks. Over the past 3 1/2 seasons, O'Neal has missed 90 games due to injuries, illnesses and suspensions.
``I've played at a very average level because of the pain, because of the swelling,'' O'Neal said.
He said he was surprised he has not fully recovered from last April's knee surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage.
O'Neal even apologized to the Pacers for stepping away from basketball to recover.
``I'm not helping the team at the level I'm used to helping,'' he said.
Wake Forest (12-5, 7-4-1 ATS) at Clemson (14-4, 10-5 ATS)
Clemson looks to bounce back from a tough loss at Duke when it hosts Wake Forest in an ACC clash.
The Tigers were able to hang around with Duke for 35 minutes on Saturday, but imploded down the stretch and lost 93-80 as a nine-point road underdog. Clemson, which committed 20 turnovers in Saturday’s loss, fell out of the Top 25 and is now 2-2 in ACC action (3-1 ATS). However, the Tigers are still 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall.
Wake Forest posted its first league victory of the season on Saturday, routing Florida State 74-57 as a one-point home favorite. In their first two league road games, the Demon Deacons lost 112-73 at Boston College as a three-point underdog and 71-64 at Maryland, barely cashing as a 7½-point chalk.
This rivalry has belonged to Wake Forest in recent years, as the Deacons have won two in a row and seven of the last eight, with five of the victories coming by double digits. In last year’s lone clash, Wake won 67-65 as a six-point home underdog, improving to 5-0 ATS in the last five. Also, the road team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight series battles, with the Deacons going 4-0 ATS in their last four visits to Clemson.
Both of these teams have been lighting up the scoreboard, with Wake Forest scoring at least 70 in eight of their last nine and Clemson hitting 70 in all but two of its 18 games, including each of the last 12.
The Tigers are 7-2 ATS as a favorite of more than seven points, but Wake Forest has cashed in both of its games as an underdog of more than seven.
The over is 10-4 in Clemson’s lined games this year, 10-3 in its last 13 at home and 3-0 in the last three series meetings at LittleJohn Coliseum in Death Valley. Conversely, the under is 13-5 in Wake’s last 18 on the highway.
ATS ADVANTAGE: WAKE FOREST and OVER
(3) Tennessee (16-1, 7-6 ATS) at Kentucky (7-9, 4-8-1 ATS)
The red-hot Volunteers take an 11-game winning streak to Rupp Arena in Lexington, where they will battle struggling Kentucky.
After winning its first three SEC games (2-1 ATS), Tennessee stepped out of conference on Saturday and faced Ohio State, holding on for a 74-69 victory but failing to cover as an 11½-point home favorite. During their 11-game winning streak, the Vols have faced nine lined opponents, going just 5-4 ATS.
Kentucky is coming off consecutive narrow SEC road losses at Mississippi State a week ago (69-64) and Florida (81-70 in overtime) on Saturday. The Wildcats covered as a nine-point underdog at Mississippi State, but came up short as a 7½-point pup at Florida. Billy Gillespie’s squad is 3-8 in its last 11 (4-7 ATS), including 3-3 SU and ATS at home, alternating wins and covers in all six of those contests.
The home team won both of last year’s meetings, with Kentucky prevailing 76-57 as an eight-point chalk and the Vols eking out an 89-85 victory as a 2½-point favorite. The Wildcats are 8-2 the last 10 meetings (5-5 ATS). The straight-up winner has covered the number in seven of the last eight clashes.
Tennessee has won four straight games on the highway, going 3-0 ATS in the last three, including back-to-back double-digit wins over Gonzaga and South Carolina. Overall, the Vols are on a 6-1-1 ATS roll as a visitor.
Tennessee has stayed under the total in three straight games, and the under is 3-0 in the last three series meetings in Kentucky. However, the Wildcats are 13-6 “over” in their last 19 overall and 6-2 “over” in their last eight at home.
ATS ADVANTAGE: TENNESSEE
(22) Drake (16-1, 11-2 ATS) at Creighton (14-3, 9-4 ATS)
Two of the top three teams in the competitive Missouri Valley Conference square off tonight at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., as Creighton puts a five-game winning streak on the line against Drake, which is shooting for its 16th consecutive victory.
Creighton pummeled Indiana State 86-69 on Saturday, covering as a 12-point home chalk. The Bluejays are 5-0 ATS during their winning streak, all against Missouri Valley foes (3-0 ATS as a favorite). In league play, Creighton is 5-2 SU and ATS, with the winner covering the spread in all seven games.
Drake slipped past Illinois State 79-73 as a 4½-point home favorite, improving to 7-0 in the Missouri Valley (5-2 ATS). The Bulldogs’ only blemish this season was a 72-66 defeat at St. Mary’s in the second game of the year back on Nov. 10.
Creighton owns a six-game SU and ATS winning streak against Drake – all as a favorite – and is 9-1 SU in the last 10 (7-3 ATS). Last year, the Bluejays won 79-56 as a 9½-point home favorite and 67-62 as a 3½-point road chalk.
The Bluejays are 10-1 at home (5-2 ATS), beating opponents by an average of 16 points per game (79-63).
Drake is 6-1 in road/neutral site games (4-2 ATS), averaging 67.3 ppg while giving up 62 ppg. However, in their last two Missouri Valley road games, the Bulldogs posted a three-point win at Evansville and a one-point victory at Bradley, failing to cash in both contests.
The Bulldogs have been an underdog just three times this season, covering the number each time (2-1 SU). Meanwhile, Creighton is 7-3 ATS as a favorite, but only 4-3 ATS as a single-digit chalk.
The under is 12-2 in Drake’s last 14 lined contests and 6-2 in its last eight league games, though the Bulldogs did hurdled the total with ease against Illinois State on Saturday. On the flip side, the over is on runs of 13-3 for Creighton overall (4-0 in the last four) and 8-0 for the Bluejays at home.

Phoenix (29-12, 18-22-1 ATS) at Milwaukee (16-25, 19-22 ATS)
The Suns kick off a four-game Midwest road trip tonight at the Bradley Center, where they’ll look to extend a three-game SU and ATS winning streak.
Phoenix followed up easy wins last week over the Lakers (106-98 on the road) and Timberwolves (115-95 at home) with Sunday’s 116-92 home rout of New Jersey, covering as a 10½-point chalk. The Suns are averaging 112.3 points per game during their mini winning streak, and their current 3-0 ATS run comes on the heels of an 4-12-1 ATS drought.
Milwaukee got hammered 106-92 at New Orleans yesterday as an 11-point underdog, gettingout scored 56-38 in the second half. The Bucks have followed up a three-game winning streak by losing five of its last six, but they’re still 6-3 ATS in their last nine overall.
The Suns knocked off Milwaukee 122-114 on Jan. 12, but failed to cover as a 12-point home favorite. Phoenix has won the last three meetings and seven of the last eight, but Milwaukee has gotten the cash in each of the last four, all as an underdog. In fact, the ‘dog is 10-1-1 ATS in the last 12 in this rivalry.
The Suns have been quite mediocre on the road of late, going 4-6 in the last 10 (4-5-1 ATS). The straight-up winner is 12-0-1 ATS in Phoenix’s last 13 contests on the highway.
Phoenix has failed to cash in each of its last five Tuesday games.
Milwaukee is 11-6 at the Bradley Center, but just 8-9 ATS, including 2-6 ATS in its last eight. On the bright side, the Bucks are on ATS streaks of 13-5 against the Pacific Division, 8-2 on Tuesdays and 14-5 as an underdog of less than eight points.
Phoenix has stayed under the total in four consecutive games overall and eight of 10 on the highway. However, the over is 7-1 in the last eight series meetings between these squads (2-1 in Milwaukee) and 11-1 in the Suns’ last 12 against the Eastern Conference.

There are only 10 games on Tuesday’s college basketball card, but gamblers still have plenty of options available to produce a monster night against the books. Let’s take a look at the televised games, including Tennessee’s trip to Rupp Arena to face Kentucky.
**Michigan at Wisconsin**
--Most sports books have installed Wisconsin (15-2 straight up, 7-7 against the spread) as a 17-point home favorite. Las Vegas Sports Consultants sent the total out at 125.
--Bo Ryan’s team has won nine in a row, starting 5-0 in Big Ten play. The Badgers are off a 62-50 win over Northwestern as 19-point home ‘chalk.’ Marcus Landry paced the winners with a game-high 21 points.
--Michigan (5-13 SU, 3-13 ATS) has a 1-5 spread record in six games as a double-digit underdog this season. The Wolverines have lost back-to-back games – vs. Iowa and at Illinois – since earning their lone Big 10 win at Northwestern.
--With Alando Tucker no longer in the mix, Wisconsin has a balanced scoring attack this season with five players averaging at least 8.1 points per game. Trevon Hughes leads the Badgers in scoring at a 13.3 PPG clip.
--Michigan forward Ronald Coleman (5.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG) is “doubtful” with a sprained ankle.
--Wisconsin has won four of the last five head-to-head meetings against Michigan both SU and ATS. The ‘over’ is 6-1 in the last seven encounters.
--Wisconsin has failed to cover the number in five straight games as a double-digit favorite.
--The ‘under’ is 6-2-1 in Wisconsin’s last nine games. On the flip side, the ‘over’ has hit in four consecutive Michigan games. The ‘over’ is 11-5 overall for the Wolverines.
--ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
**Tennessee at Kentucky**
--Most spots are listing Tennessee (16-1 SU, 7-6 ATS) as a five-point favorite. LVSC opened the total at 149.
--UT has vaulted into the No. 3 slot of this week’s Sweet 16 Rankings on the heels of Saturday’s 74-69 win over Ohio State. The victory allowed the Volunteers to gain an ever-so-small measure of revenge against the Buckeyes, who rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to clip UT in last year’s Sweet 16. The Vols failed to cover the spread as 11½-point home favorites.
--Tennessee faced Ohio St. less than 48 hours removed from an 80-60 clubbing of Vanderbilt as a 10½-point home ‘chalk.’ Wayne Chism punished the Commodores with 18 points and 18 rebounds.
--Kentucky (7-9 SU, 4-8 ATS) produced an improbable rally to force overtime Saturday in Gainesville, but UK backers would’ve rather seen a narrow defeat in regulation. Instead, the Gators cashed tickets thanks to the extra session, winning 81-70 as 7½-point home favorites.
--Jodie Meeks and Derrick Jasper both returned to action in the loss at Florida. Jasper grabbed 10 rebounds in the losing effort. Ramel Bradley played all 45 minutes, pacing UK with 23 points.
--Tennessee senior guard Chris Lofton garnered SEC Player of the Year honors after leading the league with a 20.8 PPG average last season. Lofton, who hails from Mason County and was Mr. Basketball in the state of Kentucky in high school, was a 43.8 percent shooter from 3-point range in his first thee seasons at UT. But the iron has been unkind to Lofton this year, as he’s scoring just 13.4 PPG and draining treys at just a 33.8 percent clip. Nevertheless, Bruce Pearl has his best team in three years thanks to a pair of transfers (J.P. Prince from Arizona and Tyler Smith from Iowa) and the presence of players like Chism and JaJuan Smith.
--Tennessee forward Duke Crews was cleared to play last Friday after being sidelined with a heart ailment. Crews, who averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in UT’s first eight games, probably won’t dress out in Lexington.
--The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight games and four of the last five for the Vols. For the season, UT has seen the ‘under’ go 8-5 overall.
--The ‘over’ is on a 6-2 run in UK’s last eight home games.
--Tennessee is No. 1 in this week’s RPI ratings, followed by Memphis, Kansas, North Carolina and Michigan State.
--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**
--Oregon State fired Jay John on Monday in his sixth season with the school. The Beavers, who are 6-12 and winless in six Pac-10 games, will be coached by Kevin Mouton for the rest of the year. Also, Mouton dismissed junior center C.J. Miles (6.3 PPG, 5.6 RPG) from the team. Miles was a transfer from Kansas who sat out last season.
--When Tubby Smith was at Kentucky, he didn’t recruit Lofton because of his preference for Bradley. That decision worked out in UT’s favor, but it isn’t as lopsided as it was this time last year. Bradley is actually enjoying the better senior campaign, averaging 16.1 PPG.
--Drake is a six-point underdog tonight at Creighton. The Bulldogs, who are ranked this week for the first time since 1975, are hoping for the return of their leading scorer Josh Young., who has missed three straight games with a sprained ankle. Young is averaging 16.3 PPG.
--According to GatorBait.net, Florida freshman point guard Jai Lucas missed Monday's practice with a knee injury and is "questionable" Wednesday at South Carolina. Lucas is averaging 9.7 PPG.

Oregon State dismisses forward Giles
Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Forward C.J. Giles was dismissed from the Oregon State men's basketball program on Monday, the second dismissal of his collegiate basketball career.
The announcement, made by interim head coach Kevin Mouton, comes just one day after former head coach Jay John was relieved of his duties. Oregon State is 6-12 this season, and 0-6 in the Pac-10 Conference.
Giles played in 10 games for the Beavers this season, averaging 6.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks. He did not have game eligibility until December 8, after sitting out a full year according to NCAA transfer rules, from his transfer from Kansas.
Giles played his first two collegiate years with the Jayhawks, playing in 21 games in 2004-05, and 33 in 2005-06.
But the following season, Jayhawks coach Bill Self dismissed Giles, after already suspending him from practice and game action for the first semester. University police had issued Giles a ticket for misdemeanor battery for an incident involving a former girlfriend.
"We are not now making a judgment about guilt or innocence regarding this incident," Self said at the time of Giles' dismissal. "C.J. was well aware of the consequences of another lapse in judgment...We normally would let the judicial process play its course before dismissing someone, but C.J. has exhibited a pattern of irresponsible behavior and has left us no choice."
