Varejao out until after All-Star break
January 30, 2008
CLEVELAND (AP) -Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao will miss up to four weeks with a left ankle sprain, another loss for a team gaining momentum in the Eastern Conference.
Varejao sprained the ankle when he accidentally stepped on Sasha Vujacic's foot during a win Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers. Team physician Richard Parker said Varejao has a sprain with bone bruises.
The Cavaliers (24-19), who have won 12 of 15 and five straight on the road, are already without starting guard Sasha Pavlovic for at least six weeks with a left mid-foot sprain.
Varejao has been having one of his best seasons despite not joining the team until early December because of a contract holdout. The mop-haired Brazilian averaged 7.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in 22 games.
Flu-like symptoms to keep Dwyane Wade out of Miami-Orlando game
January 30, 2008
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -Things keep getting worse for the reeling Miami Heat.
All-Star guard Dwyane Wade is still suffering from flu-like symptoms and did not fly Wednesday with the Heat for their game against the Southeast Division-leading Orlando Magic.
Starting forward Udonis Haslem (sprained left ankle) also didn't make the trip with Miami, which is already playing without injured centers Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning. O'Neal will miss another week, at least, with a sore hip; Mourning's season ended last month when he tore a knee tendon.
``There are still guys out here that have work to do,'' said Heat center Mark Blount, whose team has lost 16 of its last 17 games. ``We are still going to play hard and compete. That's all we can do right now.''
Entering Wednesday, Miami is 9-34 this season, a stunning decline for the team that won the 2006 NBA championship.
Since winning that title, the Heat have gone 53-76 - with injury battles being a constant factor.
Wade left Miami's 117-87 loss to the Boston Celtics on Tuesday midway through the third quarter, with the Heat in a 35-point hole. He headed into the locker room just before the start of the final period for treatment and rest.
``He has been under the weather the last couple of days,'' Heat coach Pat Riley said.
Haslem - who was the only Miami player to start each of the team's first 43 games - sprained his ankle when he stepped on someone's foot in the second quarter against the Celtics, who blew out the Heat despite playing without Kevin Garnett (strained abdominal muscle) and Ray Allen (flu).
Haslem left Miami's arena Tuesday night wearing a protective boot, and the team isn't sure how long he'll be sidelined.
Clippers F Corey Maggette, C Chris Kaman, and F Al Thornton are all battling the flu and are questionable for tonight.
Bulls F Joe Smith (10 ppg; flu) hasn't traveled with the team to Minnesota and will miss tonight's game.
Nuggets F Carmelo Anthony (ankle) is a game-time decision tonight, and will test his ankle by shooting around prior to the game.

1* on Drake -5
The Drake Bulldogs continue to get little respect from odds makers. Drake beat Creighton on the road 68-60 on January 22nd and now they get the BlueJays at home. This line opened at 3.5 and the betting public is all over Drake as they should be. Drake is a perfect 11-0 in home games, going 7-1 ATS in their eight lined home contests. Drake is winning by an average margin of 21 points per game at home. Until odds makers can realize that Drake is the best team in this conference, they will continue to get pounded by Bulldog backers. Drake is 9-1 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record this season. Take Drake and lay the points.

1 Unit on Georgetown -10
Georgetown is a tasty road favorite tonight when they take on St. John’s. At 7-12 on the season, St. John’s has lost 5 straight games and 7 out of their last 8 overall. St. John’s lost their last home game to Pittsburgh by 24 points. Georgetown won 72-48 at St. John’s last season in a blowout win by 24 points. It may be a little closer this year, but a double-digit win nonetheless. St. John’s is 0-8 ATS in home games off a loss by 10 points or more to a conference rival over the last 3 seasons. Georgetown is 18-8 ATS in conference games over the last 2 seasons. Cash in with Georgetown as the favorite.
