Detroit's Watson takes medical leave
January 7th, 2008

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - University of Detroit head basketball coach Perry Watson has taken a medical leave of absence, leaving the duties in the hands of associate coach Kevin Mondro.

Details of Watson's decision were not provided, but the school said he will remain involved with the program in an administrative role while monitoring the players' academic progress.

Watson is in his 15th season with Detroit and owns a record of 258-185. He is the second-winningest coach in school history, trailing only Bob Calihan.

The Titans have reached the postseason four times under Watson, earning NCAA Tournament berths in 1998 and '99, with NIT appearances in 2001 and 2002.

Mondro is in his 11th season as a member of the Detroit staff and his fourth as associate head coach.
