Bobcats' top scorer Wallace expects to play vs. Miami
ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bobcats leading scorer Gerald Wallace has been cleared to play in Tuesday's game at Miami after sitting out Charlotte's loss to Boston with a strained right calf.

Wallace, averaging 18.7 points per game, practiced without limitations Monday and traveled with the team to Miami.

Wallace played 12 minutes in Friday's loss to Orlando after being injured in the first half. An MRI Saturday showed no muscle tear, but Wallace was a late scratch from Charlotte's 96-95 loss to Boston later that night after experiencing discomfort in pregame warmups.

The Bobcats are expected to be without backup center Ryan Hollins for another week. Hollins missed Saturday's game with a left shoulder injury and was walking around in a sling Monday. He did not travel with the team to Miami.

O'Neal expected to return Tuesday

Jermaine O'Neal is expected to be back in the lineup when the Indiana Pacers open their four-game Western trip Tuesday in Denver.

O'Neal has missed the past three games and four overall with knee and calf injuries. An MRI taken Saturday revealed a slight tear in his calf, but the knee was "stable," according to coach Jim O'Brien.

The Pacers turned in impressive victories over New Orleans and Dallas without O'Neal, and nearly defeated the Cavaliers on Sunday.

What does that mean to O'Brien?

"That we can be a pretty good basketball team," he said. "We're missing a very, very important piece of our team. It's given guys like David Harrison a chance to really step forward. It's a matter of him getting his leg healthy and conditioning himself to play at a (high) level."

O'Brien said there should be no adjustment process when O'Neal returns.
"Zero," he said. "We have played exactly the way we play, with Jermaine on or off the court. You can take tapes of the games he's played and you wouldn't see any difference whatsoever."

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

(20) Wisconsin (5-0, 2-0 ATS) at (7) Duke (6-0, 3-2 ATS)

Duke figures to face its stiffest test to date when it hosts Wisconsin in a Big Ten-ACC Challenge showdown between unbeaten, nationally ranked programs.

After winning yet another Maui Invitational last week, the Blue Devils returned home on Sunday and crushed Eastern Kentucky 78-43, getting the cash as a 31-point chalk. Duke has alternated ATS wins and losses in its five lined games.

The Blue Devils are 8-0 SU all-time in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.

Wisconsin tipped off the season with four straight double-digit home wins over four cupcake opponents before welcoming Georgia to Madison on Saturday and rolling to yet another easy win, 68-49 as a 10½-point favorite. In their only other lined game, the Badgers beat Colgate 78-52 as a 19½-point home chalk.

The Badgers are on ATS runs of 5-1-1 in non-conference games, 5-0 against the ACC and 10-4-1 following a SU victory. They’re also 10-5-1 ATS in their last 16 games away from home.

Duke is 5-2 ATS in its last seven against Big Ten foes. Also, after ending last year in a 4-10 ATS slump at home, coach Mike Krzyzewski’s troops have covered the number in both of their lined games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blues Devils have scored between 77 and 86 points in their last five games, but Wisconsin is allowing just 45.6 points per contest, with only Colgate topping the 50-point barrier.

This is the first-ever meeting between these programs.

The under is 18-6 in Duke’s last 24 non-conference contests (3-2 “under” this year).

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Purdue (3-0, 1-0 ATS) at (18) Clemson (5-0, 2-1 ATS)

Purdue hits the road for the first time this year to face Clemson in another Big Ten-ACC Challenge duel between teams that have yet to taste defeat.

The Boilermakers’ schedule thus far has featured three pushovers in Bethune-Cookman, Lipscomb and Loyola-Chicago. However, Purdue struggled to put away Lipscomb 66-62 a week ago in a non-lined game before coming back and destroying Loyola-Chicago 84-53 on Saturday as a 13-point home chalk.

Clemson is coming off Saturday’s 96-67 non-lined rout of Gardner-Webb at home. The Tigers have faced two quality Division I opponents this year, beating Old Dominion 66-53 as a 13½-point home chalk and edging Mississippi State 84-82 as a four-point road underdog.

Going back to last March, Purdue is on a 7-1 ATS run (4-1 ATS away from home). However, the Boilermakers are just 1-4 ATS in their last five against the ACC.

Clemson is on ATS runs of 5-2 overall (all non-conference games) and 4-0 against the Big Ten. However, the Tigers are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 at home.

The under is 17-7 in the Boilermakers’ last 24 road games. However, the over is 6-0 in Clemson’s last six that featured a posted total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

NBA

Boston (11-1, 9-3 ATS) at Cleveland (8-6, 6-8 ATS)

LeBron James and the Cavaliers are the latest team facing the daunting task of stopping the juggernaut Celtics when these Eastern Conference squads meet up at Quicken Loans Arena.

Boston has been idle since upending the Bobcats 96-95 on Saturday. Ray Allen hitting the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough to cover the nine-point spread. The Celtics have won three in a row since suffering their only loss of the season – a 104-102 setback at Orlando – but they’re just 2-3 ATS since beginning the year with six consecutive spread-covers.

Like Boston, Cleveland carries a three-game winning streak into this contest, most recently topping the Pacers 111-106 as a two-point road underdog on Sunday. James finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, his second straight triple-double and fourth of the young season.

The Cavs have alternated ATS wins and losses in their last six games, and the straight-up winner is 7-1 ATS in their last eight contests. At home this year, Cleveland is just 3-3 SU and 1-5 ATS.

Boston is 4-0 ATS when playing after more than one day of rest.

Cleveland is 7-1 in its last eight meetings with the Celtics, but just 4-3-1 ATS, with Boston covering the number in all three clashes last year, all as an underdog.

The over is 9-5 in Cleveland’s 14 games this year, including 6-2 in the last eight. Also, the Cavs have hurdled the total in eight straight conference games. However, the under is 7-4-1 in Boston’s 12 outings this year and 10-4-1 in its last 15 dating to last season.

ATS ADVANTAGE: BOSTON

Seattle (2-12, 5-9 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (7-6, 8-5 ATS)

Rookie phenom Kevin Durant plays his first-ever NBA game in Hollywood tonight when he leads the struggling Sonics into the Staples Center to battle the suddenly slumping Lakers.

It’s been a season of streaks thus far for Seattle, which opened with eight straight losses, then won two in a row and has now dropped four straight, including Sunday’s 116-101 home loss to the Spurs as a 10-point underdog. The winner has covered the spread in each of the Sonics’ last seven games.

Durant tallied 25 points and pulled down six rebounds in Sunday’s loss to the Spurs. The rookie has scored in double figures in every game and is averaging 18.9 points per contest.

L.A. has followed up a four-game SU and ATS winning streak with four consecutive losses and non-covers. On Sunday, the Lakers hosted the Nets at Staples Center and got outscored 65-51 in the second half, falling 102-100 as a seven-point favorite.

The Lakers took three of four from Seattle last year, but the Sonics were 2-0-2 ATS, with both pushes coming in Los Angeles. Going back to the end of the 2005 season, the Lakers have won six of eight meetings (3-3-2 ATS).

Seattle is just 2-6 SU and ATS on the road, with the winner covering the number in all eight games. Meanwhile, the Lakers had a three-game home winning streak snapped in the loss to the Nets and are now 4-3 at Staples Center (5-2 ATS).

The Sonics are 1-3 ATS as a double-digit underdog this year.

The total has alternated in Seattle’s last five games, with Sunday’s contest against San Antonio easily going over the posted price. Meanwhile, even though its game against New Jersey barely jumped over the total by two points, the under is still 3-1 in L.A.’s last four home games.

The over is 7-2 in the last nine series meetings, including 4-1 in L.A.

ATS ADVANTAGE: L.A. LAKERS

Raptors' Jorge Garbajosa to have surgery, out indefinitely
ASSOCIATED PRESS

TORONTO -- Raptors forward Jorge Garbajosa plans to have more surgery on his left leg and ankle and will be out indefinitely.

The Raptors said Monday that the decision was made after Garbajosa met with a specialist in Baltimore on Monday.

The six-foot-nine, 245-pounder broke a bone in his lower leg and dislocated his ankle while trying to block a shot in March. The injury ended his rookie season.

It looked as though he would be out until training camp at the earliest, but Garbajosa declared himself healthy to play for Spain at the European basketball championship in Madrid over the summer.

At first, Toronto barred Garbajosa from participating after general manager Bryan Colangelo said that tests showed his fractured fibula wasn't completely healed, but the two sides struck a deal after the Spanish federation agreed to insure his contract.

In seven games this season, Garbajosa averaged just 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in just 10 minutes 30 seconds per game.

He was then placed on the injured list on Nov. 20 after team doctors found ''something unusual'' in an MRI.

LSU's Tasmin Mitchell to have surgery on left ankle
ASSOCIATED PRESS

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU junior forward Tasmin Mitchell will undergo surgery later this week after X-rays on Monday determined a stress fracture in his left ankle, coach John Brady said.

''I'm kind of nervous,'' Mitchell said after learning of the diagnosis. ''I've never had surgery. But this is the best decision, to go ahead with the surgery and there is a good chance I will probably not be back this season. This is the best thing for the doctors to do. They will put a couple of screws in and close it up real fast.''

The surgery is tentatively scheduled for Thursday.

Mitchell started the first three games of the season, but was able to go play 6 minutes in the Tigers' first-round loss to Oklahoma State at the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

''We are glad to now know the situation and that it will be a 6-to-8 week ordeal,'' Brady said after practice in preparation for Wednesday's game against Nicholls State.

''I feel bad for our team and I feel bad for Tasmin. We all know how hard he worked and he had gotten himself into the best shape of his career. We just have to control the things with this team that we can control. Tasmin was so important to what we had planned to do. That's 15 to 16 points and eight or nine rebounds a game that we've got to pick up somewhere else.''

If Mitchell is unable to return this season, Brady said there should be no issue preventing him from getting a medical redshirt and returning to the team for the 2008-09 season with two years of eligibility remaining.

Mitchell averaged 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in 22 minutes in the three games. Last season he averaged 14.5 points and 11.4 rebounds in 2005-06, earning freshman All-SEC honors as the Tigers reached Final Four.

Clemson's Mays to miss Purdue game with hip injury
ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson starting forward James Mays will miss Tuesday night's game against Purdue because of a hip injury.

After the game, coach Oliver Purnell said Mays had a sprained hip and was being bothered by a sore back that started hurting earlier this month.

Mayes, a senior, is averaging almost 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds a game.
