Thursday's Best NCAAB Bets

Texas A&M Aggies at Mississippi State Bulldogs (+4, N/A)

The Renardo Sidney experiment continues as the Bulldogs and Aggies tangle in the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer

Sidney, the 6-foot-10, 270-pound mystery, is expected to suit up for Mississippi State Thursday after missing Saturday’s win over South Alabama with a groin injury, but outside of that very little is certain when you’re talking about Sidney.

He decided to work out with former NBA player John Lucas this summer instead of traveling to Europe with the team and has numerous issues with the NCAA before that. It seems that he’s still a work in progress.

"He still has a ways to go,'' Bulldogs coach Rick Stansbury told ESPN. "He's taking baby steps. So far, as in his life itself, has been better. He hasn't disrupted in practice. He's been a good teammate. That part of his life is a lot better. He continues to push himself. But he's got to push himself to get in shape and play more productive minutes. That's his challenge.''

Luckily for Stansbury, the Bulldogs have a pile of talent to go around.

Pick: Bulldogs

Arizona Wildcats at St. John’s Red Storm (Pick 'em, N/A)

The Wildcats lost both Derrick Williams and starting point guard Momo Jones from last year’s club and will have a tough time coming anywhere near their production. But while coach Sean Miller will have his hands full this year, so too will St. John’s bench boss Steve Lavin.

The Red Storm have five freshman and a couple of juco transfers expected to play big roles for his club. All five starters are getting their first tastes of Division-I ball, which makes early season evaluations difficult.

“We’re a new team, we have lots of newcomers and are very young,” Lavin told reporters. “We like the skill and quickness that our team has exhibited to this point, but we don’t have the depth of size in terms of front line, and overall we’re a bit thin in terms of our rotation.”

The Wildcats head into this one 0-3 against the number but they should be able to earn their first payday here.

Pick: Wildcats

NCAAB Preview

Virgin Islands tournament

Temple won its opener 73-67 in OT over crosstown rival Penn, making just 9-17 on foul line; Owls played only seven players, and one of them only played 10 minutes. Temple is picked #2 in MAC; they've got four starters back from 26-8 team that was 14-2 in A-14. Western Michigan ha all five starters back from 21-13 team that was 11-5 in MAC; they're picked to win their half of the MAC this season.

Purdue has three starters back from 26-8 team that was 14-4 in Big 11; they've won first two games, but were just 6-19 from foul line in shaky 67-65 win over High Point- 32 of their 52 shots came from behind arc. Iona is picked to win MAAC, with three starters back from 23-12 club that went 13-5 in MAAC, but big edge for Purdue, since they've played two games, while this is Iona's season opener.

Alabama is picked 4th in SEC, with three starters back from 25-12 team that was 12-4 in league; Tide won its first two games easily, allowing only 50.5 ppg. Maryland lost three starters and its coach after a 19-14 year (7-9 in ACC); Terps beat NC-Wilmington by 9 in opener, going 0-9 from arc, 21-30 from line. SEC favorites of less than 15 points are 5-3 against the spread.

Colorado/Wichita State both won their openers by 28 over a stiff teams; Shockers are #2 pick in MVC; senior G Murray is one of best players in that league. Wichita has three starters back from 29-8 team that was 14-4 in Valley. Buffs are #10 pick in first year in Pac-12; they have couple of starters back from 23-12 team that was 8-8 in Big 12 LY, but lost 74% of their scoring from LY's team.

Charleston tournament

Western Kentucky lost to St Joe's by 11, won its next game by 3; they scored only 56.5 ppg, shooter just 32.2% from floor. Hilltoppers are the #4 pick in their half of Sun Belt. Tulsa won its first two games by 15-16 points, allowing 50.5 ppg; Hurricane has three starters back from 19-13 team that was 11-5 in C-USA. Sun Belt underdogs are 10-5 vs spread.

LSU shot just 39% from floor in splitting first two games; losing 71-63 at Coastal Carolina was very bad loss. Tigers were 11-21 LY, 3-15 in the SEC LY- is it good to have four starters back? Northwestern has never been to NCAAs but has chance this year- they use Princeton offense, a tough offense to prep for. Wildcats have four starters back from 20-14 team that was 5-11 in Big 11. Now or never for Northwestern.

Seton Hall has only two upperclassmen as they rebuild; Pirates won in OT over St Francis in their opener, rallying back from 13-point deficit in second half. Hall is picked 14th in 16-team Big East. VCU lost three of its starters from 28-12 team that finished 4th in CAA but made run to Final Four. Rams were just 7-30 from arc in shaky 62-56 win over the other St Francis (PA) in their opener.

Georgia Tech has new coach, they beat couple MEAC stiffs by 33-18 points to start season, allowing only 55.5 ppg. Jackets were 13-18 LY, with 5-11 record in ACC- they've got three starters back from that team. St Joe's held Western Kentucky to 27% from floor in its opening win; Hawks have four starters back from 11-22 team that was 4-12 in A-14. A-14 teams are 6-4 vs spread in games with single-digit spread.

Tournament at Madison Square Garden

Middleton is out for Texas A&M, whose new coach Kennedy recently was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; Aggies won first two games by 22-25 points over cupcakes, allowing 58.5 ppg. A&M is #2 pick in this, its last year in Big X. Mississippi State is 2-1, losing at home to Akron; talented but erratic Bulldogs lot three starters from LY's 17-14 team that was 9-7 in SEC, but they got talented transfer Moultrie from UTEP.

St John's has home court edge, almost whole new team after LY's senior-laden group went 21-12, 10-6 in Big East. Red Storm won its first three games by 15-5-23 points, scoring 78 ppg- this is their first game in the Garden. Arizona lost its top two scorers from LY's 30-8 team; they won first three games by 9-8-10 points, beating pretty good mid-major teams. Wildcats gave up an average of 62 ppg in those three wins.

Other games

Fairfield split its first two games, losing to Providence and its old coach by 8 (Stags were 7-point favorite); Stags have four starters back from its 25-8 team that went 15-3 and won MAAC- they're picked #2 this year. Minnesota won its first two games by 12-16 points, holding couple of stiff teams to 56.5 ppg. Gophers have three starters back from 17-14 team that was 6-12 in Big 11. MAAC road underdogs are 5-3 vs spread.

Montana crushed Idaho 74-33 at home LY, then went on road and hung on for 64-63 win in rematch; Griz has four starters back from 21-11 club that went 12-4 in Big Sky- they lost by 6 at Colorado State, then snuck by Great Falls by a point. Idaho lost its opener at Long Beach State by 8; 49ers won at Pitt last night- they're good. Vandals have two starters back from 18-14 team that was 9-7 in WAC.

Pacific won its last four games with Nevada by 4-8-3-11 points; Tigers won two of last three visits to Reno- they're #6 pick in Big West, with all five starters gone from LY's 16-15, 8-8 team. Nevada scored 56.5 ppg in losing first two games, shooting 29% from floor, 59% from foul line. Wolf Pack lost by 22 at home to Missouri State, then played better but lost by 4 at UNLV.

The St. John’s Red Storm will face their toughest test of the young season this Thursday as they tip off against the No. 16-ranked Arizona Wildcats at the 2K Sports Classic in New York. With what’s shaping up to be a competitive season in the Big East fast approaching, the heavyweight matchup will serve as a true test of the team’s mettle.

Though the Red Storm are distant National Championship contenders at best, they remain an intriguing choice on the college basketball odds board as a potential darkhorse power in the Big East. They may not have the firepower of Connecticut or Louisville, but they have benefited early on from the rounded contributions of their first-year players.

With freshmen Moe Harkless and D’Angelo Harrison serving as valuable options on offense, and with first-year upperclassmen God’sgift Achiuwa and Nurideen Lindsey thriving in their first years in uniform, the Red Storm have emerged as an interesting, albeit unconventional, threat.

Will it be enough to thwart Kyle Fogg and the Wildcats? The jury is still out. Though both St. John’s and Arizona approach the game with unbeaten 3-0 records, the Wildcats have done so with the sort of blue chip roster that has made them a perennial contender.

Will we see the Red Storm continue to rise over the course of the season? Or is the ceiling pretty much set on their season. You be the judge.
