Thursday's Best NCAAB Bets
By Covers.com

Wisconsin Badgers at Iowa Hawkeyes (5, 126)

Iowa has not beaten No. 15 Wisconsin twice in the same season since 1995, but the Hawkeyes are in position for the sweep after stunning the Badgers in Madison 72-65 on Dec. 31.

Cold shooting doomed Wisconsin in the first meeting - the Badgers were 34.8 percent from the field. The Hawkeyes and Badgers have been polar opposites this season, with Iowa riding the Big Ten's third-ranked scoring offense and Wisconsin comfortably atop the conference in scoring defense.

The Badgers have been one of the league's best road teams, sporting a 6-3 record in true away games.

Their offense, however, has not been as productive as in years past. Part of that is because of a tempo that creates fewer possessions per game (59.3) than any team in the country, but Wisconsin shoots only 42.3 percent from the floor (11th in the Big Ten) and its free-throw percentage (73.4) has dropped substantially from last year's NCAA-best figure of 81.8 percent.

Pick: Hawkeyes

USC Trojans at Arizona Wildcats (-14, 115)

Arizona’s bid for at least an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament continues with a home game against last-place Southern California, which is one loss away from tying the school record of 22 losses set in 1988-89.

The Trojans lost 57-46 to Arizona on Jan. 8, and the Wildcats’ defense has only improved over the past month. Arizona is allowing 61.7 points in Pac-12 play, while the Trojans are scoring a conference-worst 51.5 points per game. Southern California is 1-14 in its last 15 games.

The Trojans are down to six scholarship players and ranked last in most Pac-12 statistical categories. Maurice Jones is the only player averaging double figures in points at 13.7, while Byron Wesley leads all active players with 4.9 rebounds per game.

The Trojans shot only 29 percent and scored 16 points in the first half in their first meeting with the Wildcats.

Pick: Under

Game of the day: Duke at Florida State
By Covers.com

Duke Blue Devils at Florida State Seminoles (Pick 'em, 140.5)

THE STORY: After spending years on the periphery, the Seminoles are poised to end the Duke-North Carolina stranglehold that has gripped the ACC for nearly a decade.

A sellout crowd will be on hand for the biggest game in the program’s history, as 16th-ranked Florida State tries to complete a season-sweep of Duke and move closer to its first-ever ACC regular season title. A second win over the fourth-ranked Blue Devils would give the Seminoles the tie-breaker over Duke and North Carolina.

The Seminoles handed the Tar Heels a 33-point loss on Jan. 14 and, one week later, Michael Snaer’s stunning buzzer-beater gave Florida State a 76-73 win in Cameron Indoor Stadium, ending Duke's home winning streak at 45 games. Snaer’s majestic 3-pointer from the right wing, which hit nothing but net, was the perfect capper to a game in which the Seminoles shot 67 percent in the second half.

Florida State has won two straight over Duke after losing the previous five meetings. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 30-8.

ABOUT DUKE (23-4, 10-2 ACC, 12-15 ATS): The Blue Devils didn’t have to worry about staging a big comeback Sunday against rebuilding Boston College, as they blasted the young Eagles 75-50 for their fourth straight win. Duke had rallied from 10 and 20-point deficits in two of its previous three victories.

Seth Curry had 18 points in the win over Boston College and is averaging 21.6 points on 50 percent shooting (32 of 64) over the last five games. He has 17 3-pointers in that span. Star freshman Austin Rivers, who’s from Winter Haven, Florida, is averaging 18.3 points and three 3-pointers over the last six games.

The potent backcourt has helped Duke average an ACC-best 8.3 3-pointers per game and rank second in the conference in scoring (79.5 points per game). The Blue Devils’ problem, however, has been on the defensive end (68.6 points – 10th in ACC).

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (19-7, 10-2 ACC, 13-11 ATS): The Seminoles needed another clutch shot from Snaer to get past Virginia Tech last week, but followed that up with a 76-62 win over a desperate North Carolina State team Saturday.

A junior, Snaer is the most consistent offensive threat (he’s averaging a career-best 13.5 points) on a deep team. Florida State has benefited immensely from the emergence of sophomore guard Ian Miller. Miller, who missed the first 11 games due to academic issues, scored 17 points against the Wolfpack and is averaging 12.7 points off the bench over the last four games.

Meanwhile, senior center Bernard James is the driving force behind the nation’s second-best field goal defense (37 percent). James is averaging 11.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and three blocks over the last four games. More impressively, he is shooting 74 percent (17 of 23) in that span.

TRENDS:

* Under is 8-0 in the last eight meetings in Florida State.
* Under is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.
* Blue Devils are 4-11 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
* Underdog is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
* Blue Devils are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings in Florida State.

TIP INS:

1. The last team other than Duke or North Carolina to win the ACC regular-season title was Wake Forest in 2002-03.

2. The Seminoles are 6-0 at home in league play, while the Blue Devils are 6-0 in ACC road games.

3. Florida State (18.8) and Duke (18.3) are the two most foul-prone teams in the ACC, respectively. The Seminoles are the slightly better free-throw shooting team (70.2 percent compared to 69.6).

CBB Games to Watch

No. 5 Duke Blue Devils vs. No. 15 Florida State Seminoles (ESPN)

Duke will look to avenge an earlier 76-73 loss to the Seminoles as a 10½-point home favorite. It comes into this matchup 23-4 SU overall and tied with Florida State and North Carolina at 10-2 SU for the lead in the ACC. The Blue Devils are 12-15 ATS this season and 7-6 ATS on the road. Florida State rolled over North Carolina State 76-62 this past Saturday as a two-point road underdog to boost its overall record to 19-7. The Seminoles are 13-11 ATS overall and 8-5 ATS at home. They are 1-4 ATS in their last five games and the total has stayed 'under' in five of their last seven games overall.

CBB Revenge Games
By Brian Edwards
VegasInsider.com

Duke at Florida State

When these schools met at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham on Jan. 21, Florida State captured a 76-73 win as a 10½-point underdog thanks to Michael Snaer’s buzzer beater from the right wing. The Seminoles snapped a 45-game home winning streak for the Blue Devils. Xavier Gibson led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points for the winners. Snaer finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Deividas Dulkys added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Austin Rivers had a team-high 19 points in the losing effort.

Florida State (19-7 straight up, 13-11 against the spread) has won 10 of its last 11 games but in the process has become overpriced, as evidenced by a 1-4 ATS slump in its last five outings. The ‘Noles took the cash this past Saturday when they went into Raleigh and dominated North Carolina State in a 76-62 win as two-point underdogs. Ian Miller scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field to pace four FSU scorers in double figures.

Leonard Hamilton’s team has won 14 of its 15 home games, compiling an 8-5 spread record.

Most books opened this game as a pick ‘em with a total of 140½.

Since the aforementioned loss to FSU, Duke (23-4 SU, 12-15 ATS) has won seven of its last eight games, including four in a row. The Blue Devils are coming off a 75-50 win at Boston College as 14½-point road ‘chalk.’ Seth Curry and Rivers led the winners with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Rivers is averaging a team-high 15.0 points per game for Duke and he buried a game-winning trey to beat North Carolina at the buzzer in Chapel Hill. However, Rivers has an extremely mediocre assists-to-turnovers ratio (57/62) that needs improvement.

The ‘over’ is 17-10 overall for Duke. On the other hand, the ‘under’ is 12-11-1 overall for the ‘Noles, 7-5-1 in their home games. The ‘under’ is on a 12-4 run in the last 16 head-to-head meetings between these ACC adversaries, cashing in eight straight in Tallahassee.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Brigham Young at Gonzaga

Most books opened Gonzaga (21-5 SU, 11-14-1 ATS) as a 6½-point favorite with a total of 146 ½.

Mark Few’s squad saw its four-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s 66-65 loss at San Francisco as a five-point road favorite. Elias Harris had 21 points and 11 rebounds against the Dons.

BYU (23-6 SU, 14-11 ATS) comes to Spokane on a five-game winning streak that began with an 83-73 win over Gonzaga as a 3½-point home favorite on Feb. 2. Noah Hartsock was the catalyst on that night, producing 24 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Matt Carlino added 18 points and five assists, while Brandon Davies chipped in with 15 points. Sam Dower had a team-high 15 points for the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga lost at BYU earlier this month and was also sent packing from the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament by the Cougars, who cruised to an 89-67 triumph thanks to 34 points and six assists from the departed Jimmer Fredette.

Gonzaga is 13-1 SU and 7-7 ATS at home this year. The Bulldogs have been single-digit home favorites just twice, going 1-1 both SU and ATS with a win (and cover) vs. Saint Mary’s and an outright loss to Michigan St.

Dave Rose’s team has been a road underdog three times, going 1-2 both SU and ATS. BYU won outright at Va. Tech but lost and failed to cover at Utah St. and at Saint Mary’s.

The ‘under’ is 14-11 overall for BYU.

The ‘under’ is 18-7-1 overall for Gonzaga, 10-3-1 in its home games.

ESPN2 will provide television coverage at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

Alabama will travel to Fayetteville on Thursday to take on Arkansas. Most books opened this game as a pick ‘em with a total of 132½. The Razorbacks are coming off their first home loss of the season, while the Crimson Tide stopped the bleeding this past Saturday with a home win over Tennessee. Anthony Grant has reinstated JaMychal Green to the team but his status against the Hogs is in doubt. Tony Mitchell’s suspension will last for the rest of the year.

Most books opened Wisconsin as a five-point favorite for Thursday’s Big Ten game at Iowa. The Hawkeyes are coming off a convincing home win over Indiana as four-point underdogs. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

Saint Mary’s can’t afford a hiccup Thursday night at Portland. The Gaels opened as 11½-point road favorites at most books.

Cincinnati will host Louisville at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Most spots opened the Bearcats as 1½-point home favorites.

Florida State Tries For Unlikely Sweep Of Duke
Sportspic.com

The Florida State Seminoles beat the North Carolina Tar Heels once this season. They defeated Duke as well, and they get a chance to take down the Blue Devils again. Can they?

Why Duke Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your Sports Bet on this game, an appreciation of the odds is really the first and best place to start. Florida State snuck up on Duke in the first meeting of the season between these two teams. Nobody expected the Seminoles to go into Durham, North Carolina, and pull out a win inside Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke’s almost impregnable home arena. Yet, that’s exactly what the Seminoles did on a Michael Snaer three-pointer at the final buzzer. Florida State is having a terrific season, but the Seminoles lost to Boston College and Clemson in Atlantic Coast Conference competition. They experience many lulls and letdowns over the course of a 30-game slate, and they lost at home to Princeton earlier this season while also losing their other marquee non-conference contests in November and December.

It’s only in January that Florida State began to play well, and the Seminoles – who are unaccustomed to playing for ACC regular-season championships – are likely to feel the pressure of this moment far more than Duke, which has been through so many high-stakes battles over the years under Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. It would be harder to think that Florida State could sweep Duke than to think that the Blue Devils will gain a season split. Pure odds stand in favor of Duke, not against it.

Why Florida State Will Win

The college basketball betting experts who follow the Atlantic Coast Conference are plainly aware of one very simple truth: Florida State plays up to the competition when it is facing a highly-credentialed foe, and down to the competition when it is facing a lower-tier team in the ACC. Florida State’s losses this season in the ACC have come against bottom-feeders, but the Seminoles have handled the best teams, beating both North Carolina and Duke. This game is on FSU’s home floor in Tallahassee, Florida, giving coach Leonard Hamilton’s squad yet one more occasion in which to gather its emotions and play a high-energy game in front of an amped-up home crowd. Florida State is in position to play well in this game, and it is likely to throw a strong defensive effort at the Blue Devils, a team that can easily fall into bad habits at the offensive end of the floor. Duke sometimes slips into a pattern marked by a lot of deep three-pointers within a context of one-on-one play and an unwillingness to rotate the ball around the perimeter. Duke can be impatient, and if the Blue Devils exhibit that trait, Florida State not only can, but will, take advantage.

Who Will Win

The odds will likely have the final say here. Duke will likely play a more focused, determined and airtight brand of ball. Florida State will put up a good fight, but Duke should prevail and get a split of the season series.

Horizon League Betting News and Game Previews
By Rob Veno
Sportsmemo.com

With the conference tournament set to begin next Tuesday, February 28, tonight’s Horizon League games are extremely important for seedings. There is a mad scramble for the No. 2 through No. 6 seeds that likely won’t be fully settled tonight. The coveted No. 2 slot means a direct ticket right into the tourney semifinals and No. 3 through No. 6 guarantee first round home floor and with a win, a second round home game as well. There’s a lot of incentive to win for eight of the league’s ten teams so here’s a game-by-game look at what’s at stake tonight. I give an opinion on the games where I feel there may be a slight edge.

Detroit @ Cleveland State – Just two weeks ago, the Vikings were on a five game winning streak and in the driver’s seat for the conference tournament’s No. 1 seed. Their unexpected 59-41 home loss to Valparaiso that night started a horrendous five-game losing streak (both SU and ATS) that has them clinging to hopes of the No. 2 seed. To make that happen, CSU must win against Detroit and Saturday against Wright State, and have Valparaiso win Friday at home against Butler. Cleveland State could finish as high as No. 2 or they could find themselves at the mercy of the tie breakers and possibly without a home game. Detroit is also in the hunt for the No. 2 spot as they now control their own destiny. A win tonight over Cleveland State coupled with a win on Saturday at Wright State and the Titans gain the double-bye into the tournament semis. Their pair of wins over Butler made this possible because if they end in a 12-6 tie, Detroit wins the tie-breaker. Opinion: UNDER…See this game taking on a playoff type atmosphere and expect CSU HC Gary Watters who’s without second leading scorer D’Aundray Brown again to try and muck this one up turning into a slower paced slugfest.

Wright State @ Youngstown State – For YSU this game is huge. If they can defeat Wright State tonight (something they’ve done only once in their L13 meetings), and then win on Saturday at home against Detroit, they would host one and possibly a pair of home games in the first two rounds. If they split, the scenarios are too many to list right now but if they lose both, they’d be on the first round road. Wright State is already slotted to open the Horizon tournament on the road no matter how they finish so they are in the spoilers role here tonight and at Cleveland State on Saturday. Opinion: None

Wisconsin-Green Bay @ Loyola-Chicago – Starting with Loyola here it’s pretty simple. They will open on the road no matter what they do tonight and Saturday but they could finish 9th instead of 10th. Should they win their last two games and tie Illinois-Chicago for last place, Loyola would receive the No. 9 slot due to the season split between the two and then their 0-1 record vs. Valpo as opposed to UIC’s 0-2 mark against them. For Green Bay, they still have an outside shot at gaining a first round home game but they must win out to do so. The opportunity is enhanced because the schedule is kind to them as they play last place Loyola tonight and at second to last place Illinois-Chicago on Saturday. Opinion: None

Wisconsin-Milwaukee @ Illinois-Chicago – As stated above, the Flames will either enter the tourney as the No. 9 or No. 10 seed which has them on the road facing either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. All the Panthers know for sure is that if they beat Illinois-Chicago tonight they'll play host to a first-round conference tournament game at the Klotsche Center. That’s plenty of motivation and opportunity for Milwaukee which is currently a -5 point favorite in this game. Like Wisconsin-Green Bay, UWM is on the Chicago trip for their final two games which gives them the chance to climb into the No. 3 or No. 4 hole which would guarantee them another game versus one of the lowly Chicago schools. Opinion: Wisconsin-Milwaukee -5…UIC has nothing to play for here since their emotional effort would figure to be here on Saturday in their final home game. Milwaukee on the other hand has a great amount of motivational reason to be focused and HC Rob Jeter’s quote would seem to emphasize that: "We're just going to try to focus on Thursday. We have to do whatever we can to get this one."

Butler @ Valparaiso (Friday night) - On Tuesday, Valparaiso clinched its first regular-season Horizon League title and the No. 1 seeding for the tournament with a victory over Loyola so there’s nothing at stake for them here. It won’t even be there final home game because they’ll host the tournament semifinals. If Butler wins this game and Cleveland State defeats Detroit tonight then it’s a done deal, the Bulldogs will be the No. 2 seed either outright or by virtue of winning the tie-breaker between them and Cleveland State. However, if Detroit wins out and finishes in a tie with Butler, they would become the No. 2 seed with Butler sliding to the No. 3 slot. Opinion: Butler (Line figures to open around Valparaiso -1). Butler is playing head and shoulders above where they’ve been for most of the season while the Crusaders are in a semi-funk going 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS in their L4G. HC Brad Stevens was quoted as saying “We’re not done yet” after their rout of UIC Tuesday night and the way their defense has played since the second half of the Cleveland State game February 11th, I believe him.
