Tuesday's Best NCAAB Bets
By Covers.com

Washington vs. Marquette (-6, 156.5)

Two of the nation's highest-scoring teams clash when No. 16 Marquette takes on Washington in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Golden Eagles, who average 84.1 points, are coming off an impressive 61-54 victory at then-No. 7 Wisconsin 61-54 on Saturday, while the Huskies (81.0 points) will be looking to rebound from a 76-73 overtime defeat at Nevada.

The Golden Eagles have been generating easy baskets with a pressure defense that ranks among the nation's best in forcing turnovers (18.1 per game). Senior guard Darius Johnson-Odom averages a team-best 19.4 points, while senior forward Jae Crowder adds 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Marquette's talent should overwhelm Washington.

Pick: Marquette

Memphis at Miami (-1.5, 139.5)

Memphis has had a tough time against better competition, but jumped back up into the top 20 this week after a pair of easy wins over lower-level foes.
The Tigers, who were in the top 10 to begin the season, fell to Michigan and Georgetown in the Maui Invitational and needed double overtime to edge Tennessee in the same tournament.

Miami might not quite be on the level of Michigan or Georgetown, but the Hurricanes are making their way up.

The Tigers will aim for a strong road win when they visit Miami. The Hurricanes have a pair of losses on their record as well but have been strong at home, going 5-0.

Miami is under the direction of first-year coach Jim Larranaga, who took over the program from Frank Haith in the off-season.

Larranaga has had to live with a smaller team because of starting center Reggie Johnson’s knee injury, but has compensated with more shooters. The Hurricanes are using an eight-man rotation with four starting guards and only three true forwards.

Two, guard-heavy lineups should push the pace in this contest and lead to many transition baskets.

Pick: Over

Marshall-Syracuse & Evansville-North Carolina Previews
By Covers.com

Marshall Thundering Herd at Syracuse Orange (-14.5, 135)

THE STORY: Syracuse continues to roll despite off-court distractions hogging the front page of the sports section. The No. 3 Orange picked up their biggest win of the season when they defeated Florida 72-68 at home Friday. While Tuesday’s meeting with Marshall may look like a letdown spot, coach Jim Boeheim is very wary of the Thundering Herd. Marshall, picked to contend for the C-USA title, is coming off its first loss of the season - 70-68 to Ohio - and needs to get tougher inside if it wants to keep pace with Syracuse’s towering lineup. The Thundering Herd, who only go as tall as 6 feet 9 in the starting lineup, were outscored 45-30 in the paint versus the Bobcats.

ABOUT MARSHALL (5-1): The Thundering Herd already have a victory over a Big East opponent this season, knocking off Cincinnati 75-69 in overtime on Nov. 25. Against Ohio, Marshall got 57 of its total 68 points from the starting lineup, going four deep into the bench. Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane has done it all for the Herd, leading the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game while also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (8-0): The Orange flexed their muscle in the backcourt with the win over No. 10 Florida, getting terrific production from guards Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche who, not only combined for 36 points, but also had to keep up with speedy Gators guards Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker. Up front, the Orange are showing improved toughness around the basket. The frontcourt is made more for finesse, but forward C.J. Fair was aggressive on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds off the bench against Florida. The Orange are missing muscle in the middle with the graduation of Rick Jackson.

TIP-INS:

1. Marshall coach Tom Herrion is all too familiar with the Carrier Dome. He was an assistant at Providence and Pittsburgh before taking over the Herd, compiling a 5-5 all-time mark versus the Orange.

2. Marshall could get 6-foot-10 center Nigel Spikes back Tuesday. He’s been out after undergoing knee surgery in late September. Spikes’ size would be a major boost against a long and athletic Syracuse frontcourt.

3. Before Syracuse’s four-point win over Florida, the Orange’s average margin of victory was 26 points through their first seven games.

Evansville Purple Aces at North Carolina Tar Heels (-25, 152.5)

THE STORY: North Carolina tries to bounce back from its crushing one-point loss at top-ranked Kentucky when it hosts Evansville. The No. 6 Tar Heels led by as many as nine in the first half and six in the second before the Wildcats rallied to win 73-72 in what might have been a Final Four preview. The Purple Aces have alternated wins and losses, most recently falling 70-68 in overtime at home to TCU. North Carolina won last year’s meeting 76-49 in Evansville as Tyler Zeller, an Indiana native who grew up 60 miles from Evansville’s campus, scored 18 points.

ABOUT EVANSVILLE (3-3): Junior swingman Colt Ryan, a preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, scored 31 points against TCU and has scored in double digits in 15 straight games. He is averaging a team-high 19.7 points and 2.3 steals. The Purple Aces are weak on defense and on the glass. They give up 71.3 points per game (272nd nationally) and grab 31.0 rebounds per game (315th). They were picked to finish fifth in the MWC.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (6-2): Zeller and Harrison Barnes scored 14 apiece in the loss to Kentucky. Barnes is shooting 48 percent and averaging a team-high 17.3 points. John Henson averages a double-double with 14.1 points and 10.5 rebounds. Freshman guard P.J. Hairston is hitting 48.6 percent from beyond the arc. The explosive Tar Heels ranks sixth nationally in assists (18.9), 13th in scoring (82.5), 15th in rebounds (41.5) and 31st in shooting (48.4 percent).

TIP-INS:

1. Coach Marty Simmons is 54-75 in five seasons at Evansville.

2. Evansville is 30-128 in true road games over the past 12 years.

3. North Carolina just completed a tough eight-day stretch in which it went 1-2 against three 2011 NCAA tournament teams: UNLV, Wisconsin and Kentucky.
