Villanova Wildcats at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1.5, 136)

Villanova and Rutgers are meeting for the second time in less than a week. The 14th-seeded Wildcats posted a 77-71 road win over the 11th-seeded Scarlet Knights last Thursday, their lone victory in their last six games and second in the last 10.

Both teams are among the youngest in the conference, with neither side having a single scholarship senior on the roster. Villanova is 15th among 16 Big East teams in scoring defense, while Rutgers is 15th in scoring offense.

The Scarlet Knights have shown improvement down the stretch, winning two of their last three despite a green lineup that features three freshman starters.

Rookie G Eli Carter is the lone Rutgers player scoring in double figures at 13.5 ppg, while freshman G Myles Mack and sophomore PF Gilvydas Biruta add 9.9 ppg each.

We like Rutgers to get the better of the Wildcats this time.

Pick: Scarlet Knights

Providence Friars vs. Seton Hall Pirates (-5.5, 136.5)

Seton Hall will be looking to help its shot at an NCAA tournament bid that seemed all but certain before the Pirates faded down the stretch by losing three of their last four, including an ugly 86-58 defeat at last-place DePaul on Saturday.

Providence, which suffered a 66-57 home loss to Seton Hall on Jan. 7, will look to play the role of spoiler after finishing the regular season with a narrow 75-69 setback at Notre Dame. The Pirates and Friars finished 1-2 in the Big East this season in 3-point shooting percentage.

The young Pirates have leaned heavily on their two All-Big East seniors — second-team PG Jordan Theodore leads the team in scoring (16.0) and assists (6.7), while third-team PF Herb Pope adds 15.3 points and a team-best 10.3 rebounds.

Defensively, Seton Hall allows opponents to shoot just 31 percent from 3-point range, and sophomore SG Fuquan Edwin leads the nation in steals with 3.1 per game.

Pick: Under

Big East Conference Tournament: Tuesday's Betting Previews
By Covers.com

DePaul Blue Demons vs. UConn Huskies (-8.5, 145.5)

THE STORY: Last year at this time, Connecticut stumbled into the Big East tournament on the NCAA tournament bubble and began an historic run that would take them through 11 straight wins and the national championship. The Huskies are hoping for a similar result in 2011-12, but the Huskies have some work to do. Connecticut limps into the conference tournament having dropped nine of its last 13 games. That starts against DePaul, which got crushed by the Huskies, 80-54, on Feb. 15. The Blue Demons showed what they were capable of in an 86-58 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday but are still the 16th seed.

THE LINE: The Huskies opened as 8.5-point favorites with a 145.5-point total.

ABOUT DEPAUL (12-18, 3-15 Big East): The Blue Demons can score with the best of them but had not been able to stop anyone on the other end until Saturday, when they thoroughly dismantled the Pirates. That snapped a nine-game losing streak and gave DePaul a little momentum on the eve of the tournament. The Blue Demons did a great job of stopping Seton Hall point guard Jordan Theodore, which was a problem when they faced the Huskies. In the Feb. 15 meeting, Shabazz Napier cut through the DePaul defense en route to 14 points and 11 assists. Second-leading scorer Brandon Young had one of his worst games in that one, struggling to two points on 1-of-9 shooting.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (18-12, 8-10): The ninth-seeded Huskies dominated the glass against the Blue Demons, outrebounding them 47-22 as Alex Oriakhi and Andre Drummond combined for 29 points and 19 boards. Connecticut managed to keep its at-large hopes alive on Saturday, as coach Jim Calhoun returned to the sidelines and guided the team to a 74-65 victory over Pittsburgh. Calhoun had missed the last month due to back problems as the team slipped down the standings. The Huskies have a strong non-conference win over Florida State and won at Notre Dame but could use a little more Madison Square Garden magic to push them to better bubble position.

TRENDS:

- UConn has covered in four of the last five meetings between the two teams.
- DePaul is 0-8 against the spread following an ATS loss.
- The over is 5-0 in UConn's last five.

TIP-INS:

1. UConn beat DePaul, 97-71, in the first round of the tournament last season.

2. Huskies G Jeremy Lamb was named first-team All-Big East while Drummond was named to the All-Rookie team.

3. The winner will play No. 8 seed West Virginia on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. St. John's Red Storm (5.5, 135)

THE STORY: Last season, both St. John’s and Pittsburgh entered the Big East tournament virtually assured of a spot in the NCAA tournament. This year, both schools will need a miracle run all the way to the championship to get back. The Panthers will say goodbye to several key seniors after this season and are limping into Madison Square Garden losers of six of their last seven games. The lone victory in that stretch came at home on Feb. 29, when Pittsburgh rolled over the Red Storm, 89-69, behind 19 points from senior Ashton Gibbs.

THE LINE: Oddsmakers had the Red Storm pegged as 5.5-point underdogs with a 135-point total at the open.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (16-15, 5-13 Big East): The 13th-seeded Panthers were ranked as high as No. 9 in the country in Week 2 but had injuries to several key players derail the season early. They averaged 53.2 during a five-game losing streak from Feb. 8 to Feb. 26 that knocked them off the bubble completely. Pittsburgh’s best game in the last month came against St. John’s, when it shot 63.3 percent from the floor and dominated the glass, 30-14. The Panthers could not carry that momentum into the regular season finale, dropping a 74-65 decision at Connecticut. Pittsburgh has won the Big East Tournament twice but has never had to win five games in as many days to accomplish the feat.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (13-18, 6-12): The 12th-seeded Red Storm are a completely different team than the one that went to the NCAA tournament last season. St. John’s starts five freshman and gives only six players regular minutes, with sixth man God’sgift Achiuwa a first-year player as well. The Red Storm have suffered through the inconsistencies of that youth, with highs like a 61-58 win over Notre Dame and lows in losses at Pittsburgh and Rutgers to close the season. Second-leading scorer Moe Harkless struggled to four points against the Panthers while D’Angelo Harrison led with 21.

TRENDS:

- Pitt has covered the number in six of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
- St. John's has covered in four of its last five.
- The under is 9-4 in St. John's last 13 neutral-site games.

TIP-INS:

1. The winner will play No. 5 seed Georgetown on Wednesday.

2. Gibbs and Harkless were named to the All-Big East Honorable Mention list.

3. Pittsburgh has advanced to seven of the last 11 Big East Championship Finals.

Tuesday's A10 Action
By Bookmaker.eu

Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Duquesne Dukes

The Minutemen march into the Atlantic 10 tournament with an inkling of momentum having won their regular-season finale and almost beating conference juggernaut Temple last week.

Massachusetts was afforded the No. 8 seed in the tourney, and a first-round home game, after knocking off Rhode Island in the finale. The 89-83 final score wasn't enough to cover the NCAA betting odds as 9.5-point home favorites. Head coach Derek Kellogg feels that his players are peaking at just the right time. They will need to win the A-10 tournament championship in order to get an invitation to the March Madness dance.

"This isn't the best UMass basketball left, but that's around the corner," Kellogg said.

The Minutemen are dangerous because they can summon scoring from any of five players that averaged better than eight points per game this year. Jesse Morgan had 25 points against Rhode Island while Sampson Carter poured in 22 and 10 rebounds. Against Temple last Wednesday, 5-foot-8 point guard Chaz Williams went off for 26 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and four steals.

Because of its size in the paint, UMass does a great job on the boards. The team finished the season ranked 12th nationally in rebounds per game.

Duquesne wasn't able to finish the regular season on a high note. The Dukes lost to visiting St. Louis, 75-60, even though the Billikens were without head coach Rick Majerus, who was hospitalized before the game. The home team didn't cover the NCAA betting odds as 4.5-point dogs.

"We're just trying to get it out of our minds and move on," B.J. Monteiro said. "It's a whole new season on Tuesday. We're just being positive and getting ready to make a run."

St. Louis forced the Dukes into 14 turnovers. That total was actually down from the 16.0 they averaged this season, which was the worst mark in the league.

Another familiar flaw was exposed by the Billikens on Saturday. Duquesne is very small in the frontcourt and allowed 40 points in the paint. The 35-21 rebound margin could spell trouble against one of the best rebounding programs in the country Tuesday.

Ron Everhart said Saint Louis did a great job of denying T.J. McConnell the ball. UMass should try to utilize a similar approach because Monteiro and McConnell are the heart and soul of squad and when one is limited, the offense is handicapped.

These schools met back on January 18 and Massachusetts won the rebounding battle 40-28 and shot 48 percent compared to the Dukes' 41 percent, but a season-high 29 turnovers was too much to overcome. Duquesne won 80-69 as 5.5-point home chalk and the game went under the total of 156. UMass was without Sampson Carter.

The winner of this matchup will have to take on top-seeded Temple. The NCAA betting odds for this contest will first open at BookMaker sportsbook. The Dukes are just 4-8 SU on road on the road this year and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 outings. Now you can wager in-game while the action unfolds with BookMaker's live betting option.

Richmond Spiders at La Salle Explorers

The itsy bitsy Spiders have fallen far from the championship web they wove last year. As the No. 10 seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament, Richmond will need a miraculous run to reach the Big Dance.

After beating Dayton 82-71 last Wednesday, which covered the NCAA betting odds of 2.5 points, Richmond rolls into this conference tourney with a hint of momentum. The Spiders have won three of their past four games, which included two of the league's top teams in Dayton and Saint Joseph's. After a stretch where it lost five of six, Richmond's recent turnaround can be attributed to the defense. The Flyers put up 71 points on it but they are also the second-best scoring team in the A-10. None of the four previous opponents reached 66 points, and all four of those games went under the posted total.

When the defense is sound, and Darien Brothers is scoring at will, this Spiders squad is a tough out for anyone. Keep in mind they beat Temple earlier in the year.

The glaring red flag with Richmond is that it has been a horrendous rebounding team. It finished the year ranked No. 326 out of 338 Division I schools in rebounding margin. The Explorers aren't a good rebounding team either, however.

La Salle enters the A-10 tourney on a two-game win streak, having defeated St. Bonaventure -- winner of four straight -- 71-61 in the season finale on Saturday. The Explorers covered the NCAA betting odds in that game and are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.

Freshman forward Jerrell Wright was in double figures for the tenth time in his last 12 games with 10 points. Four Explorers achieved double-digit point totals, led by Tyreek Duren with 21 points.

The victory gave La Salle is first 20-win season since the 1991-92 season.

But there are two major concerns heading into the tournament: Depth and rebounding.

The Explorers are essentially running a six- or seven-man rotation, depending on the opponent. Bench scoring is way down.

Like Richmond, rebounding has been a big issue all year for La Salle. It lost the battle on the boards Saturday, 31-27, but the prior three games were worse. The Explorers were outrebounded by double digits against George Washington (31-21), Fordham (40-26) and Temple (46-28).

When these schools met in the regular season, the Explorers didn't do a lot wrong against the Spiders. Four players were in double figures and they shot 59 percent from downtown, but lost 78-76 as short road chalk. Rebounding proved to be the difference as La Salle was dominated 45-24 on the boards, 19 of which were on the offensive end.

The winner of this matchup will face No. 2 seed Saint Louis on Friday. The NCAA betting odds for this contest will first open at BookMaker sportsbook. Expect the Exlporers to be pegged as small favorites because of the home-court advantage. Now you can wager in-game while the action unfolds with BookMaker's live betting option.

Big East Tournament Tips
By Brian Edwards
VegasInsider.com

Providence vs. Seton Hall

As of early this morning, most betting shops had Seton Hall (19-11 straight up, 16-10 against the spread) installed as a 5½-point favorite with a total of 136. Gamblers can take Providence to win outright for a plus-180 return (risk $100 to win $180).

Kevin Willard’s team comes to New York City on the proverbial bubble looking to bounce back from an abysmal performance in its regular-season finale. Seton Hall lost three of its last four games, including Saturday’s 86-58 loss at DePaul as a 5½-point road ‘chalk.’ Herb Pope scored a team-high 16 points in the losing effort.

Providence (15-16 SU, 13-12 ATS) has won two of its last three games and taken the cash in each of those contests. The Friars came up on the short end of a 75-69 decision at Notre Dame, but they covered the spread as 11-point road underdogs. LaDontae Henton produced a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Providence owns a 10-10 spread record in underdog situations this season. Meanwhile, Seton Hall has compiled a 7-5 spread record in 12 single-digit ‘chalk’ spots.

When these teams met during the regular season on Jan. 7, Seton Hall captured a 66-57 win as a 2½-point road favorite. Fuquan Edwin led the way for the Pirates with 24 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jordan Theodore tallied 14 points, nine assists, six steals and four rebounds, while Pope finished with 11 points and 10 boards.

Theodore is one of the Big East’s premier guards, averaging 15.7 points and 6.6 assists per game. Pope averages 15.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest.

Seton Hall has beaten Providence in six of the last seven head-to-head meetings, going 5-2 versus the number. These schools played a memorable game in the 2010 Big East Tournament, as the Pirates won by a 109-106 count as 5½-point favorites.

The ‘over’ is 14-11 overall for the Friars, going 8-4 in their last 12 games.

The ‘under’ is 15-11 overall for the Pirates.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. The winner will advance to take on Louisville on Wednesday night.

Villanova vs. Rutgers

As of early this morning, most spots had Villanova (12-18 SU, 7-19-1 ATS) listed as a 1½-point favorite with a total of 136½.

Rutgers (14-17 SU, 9-16 ATS) has won two of its last three games, including Saturday’s 61-58 victory over St. John’s as an eight-point home favorite. Eli Carter scored a team-high 15 points for the Scarlet Knights, who got a double-double out of Dane Miller (10 pts., 10 boards).

Villanova is in the midst of a 1-8-1 ATS slide. The Wildcats lost 72-68 to Cincinnati as one-point home underdogs in their regular-season finale. Maalik Wyans had 26 points and five assists in the loss.

These Big East rivals collided at The RAC in New Jersey on March 1 with Villanova winning by a 77-71 count as a 3½-point underdog. Maalike Wayns led the Wildcats with 18 points and eight assists before fouling out. JayVaughn Pinkston scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

The ‘over’ has cashed at a lucrative 20-7 overall clip in ‘Nova games.

The ‘under’ is 13-12 overall for RU, but the ‘over’ is 5-1 in its last six games.

The ‘over’ has hit in 11 consecutive head-to-head meetings between these schools.

ESPNU will have the telecast approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Providence-Seton Hall. The winner will face South Florida late Wednesday night.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

Davidson is going back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 after beating Western Carolina in a double-overtime thriller last night in the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville. The Wildcats, who failed to cover in the 93-91 win as 12½-point favorites, advanced to the Elite Eight behind Stephen Curry in ’08 and lost by just one to the eventual national champion, Kansas.

VCU is returning to the NCAA Tournament after last year’s run to the Final Four, earning the Colonial’s automatic bid thanks to last night’s 59-56 win over Drexel as a three-point favorite. Despite losing four starters from last season, the Rams look like a dangerous squad with their suffocating pressure defense.

The action gets started early at Madison Square Garden today with UConn taking on DePaul at noon Eastern on ESPN2. The Huskies are nine-point favorites with a total of 144½.

Thirty minute after UConn-DePaul, St. John’s and Pitt will collide at MSG. The Panthers are favored by five with a total of 135.
