UNLV Runnin' Rebels at UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (+4, 141)
With three days to recover from the excitement of knocking off the top team in the country, No. 20 UNLV is adjusting to life as a team with new expectations.
When Dave Rice took over for Lon Kruger in the off-season, the former Rebels player set about making sure a talented team would stick with him through the transition. Eleven players chose to stick with the program, including stars Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield. UNLV will be looking to avoid a letdown when it visits UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday.
The Gauchos are a tough group that has already crushed Santa Clara and took San Diego State into overtime Saturday. Orlando Johnson found his name on a few preseason All-American lists and should give the Rebels trouble.

Pittsburgh Panthers at Duquesne Dukes (+6, 149.5)
No. 17 Pittsburgh and Duquesne renew acquaintances for the 80th time in the annual City Game, which for the second straight year will be played at the Consol Energy Center.
The Panthers have won 29 of the last 32 series meetings, including the past 10 by an average of 15.7 points. And, although the last five meetings have finished under the total, the teams are a combined 7-2 over/under to start the year - both ranking among the Top 50 offensive programs in the country.
Pitt has bounced back from its home loss to Long Beach State with three consecutive victories, including an 81-71 triumph over Robert Morris its last time out. Duquesne dominated Louisiana-Lafayette in its last game, never trailing and leading by as many as 24 in an 84-65 victory.

Wisconsin at North Carolina

The 13th edition of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge will continue Wednesday night with a six-pack of games, including a high-profile matchup between Wisconsin and North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
As of early this morning, most betting shops had the Tar Heels listed as eight-point favorites with a total of 135.
Roy Williams is hoping what happened in Vegas (losing) this past weekend will stay in Sin City because UNC dropped a 90-80 decision to UNLV as a 7½-point favorite at The Orleans Arena.
Chace Stanback was the catalyst for the Runnin’ Rebels, scoring 28 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Harrison Barnes and P.J. Hairston paced the Tar Heels with 15 points apiece, while Jon Henson finished with 11 points and eight boards.
Barnes rolled his right ankle and was reportedly seen leaving the arena on crutches. His status for Wednesday is considered ‘questionable,’ but reports out of Carolina indicate that Barnes practiced Tuesday and will most likely play barring a setback.
Barnes averages a team-high 17.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Henson is nearly averaging a double-double, scoring 15.8 PPG while grabbing 9.8 rebounds per contest.
North Carolina (5-1 straight up, 3-2 against the spread) opened the season with a 67-55 win over Michigan St. as an 8½-point ‘chalk.’ Since then, it really hasn’t faced anyone of note. The Heels drilled South Carolina 87-62 in their first game out in Las Vegas.
Wisconsin (6-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) has dealt out woodshed treatment to all six of its opponents by 17 points or more. Bo Ryan’s squad is coming off a 73-56 win over Brigham Young as a 7½-point favorite at Sears Centre in Chicago.
Ben Brust drained seven 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 21 points for the winners. Jordan Taylor, the Badgers’ All-American candidate at point guard, scored 18 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds compared to only one turnover.
Through six games, this has been a vintage Wisconsin team under Ryan. The Badgers get after it defensively, run their offense deep into shot clocks and take quality looks. They lost three starters from last year’s team that lost to Butler in the Sweet 16.
Wisconsin hasn’t been tested by any top-tier teams yet, beating up on the likes of Kennesaw St., Colgate, Wofford and Bradley. Taylor is averaging 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He’s a physical guard who can control tempo and get into the lane to make plays consistently.
The ‘over’ is 4-1 overall for UNC, while the ‘under’ has cashed at a 2-1 clip for the Badgers.
Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets
Gamblers have a late-night option with Gonzaga hosting Notre Dame at 11:15 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. As of early this morning, most books had the Bulldogs as 10-point favorites with a total of 13½. The Irish suffered a devastating blow when leading scorer Tim Abromaitis tore his ACL at last Friday’s practice. He was averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Michigan St. will take on FSU tonight at Breslin Center at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. The Spartans were favored by 5½ at most spots this morning. The total was 123½.
Billy Donovan collected his 400th career win Monday when the Gators trounced Stetson 96-70 in Orlando. Bradley Beal scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while senior point guard Ervin Walker dropped 21 on the Hatters. UF will face Syracuse on Friday at the Carrier Dome.
Virginia has to feel good about its head coaches in football and basketball. Mike London has the Cavs going to a bowl game for the first time since 2007, while Tony Bennett has the hoops team sporting a record. UVA used a 19-2 second-half run to pull away from Michigan for a 70-58 triumph Tuesday night in Charlottesville.
Penn St. is a four-point favorite tonight at Boston College on ESPNU at 7:15 p.m. Eastern. The total is 122½.
Nebraska will host Wake Forest tonight at 9:15 p.m. Eastern. The Cornhuskers are 12½-point favorites with the total at 139½. ESPNU will have the telecast.
NCAAB Preview
Drexel-St Joe's split their last six meetings, with all six games decided by 10+ points. Dragons are 2-2, losing by 5-14 vs only two top 200 teams they've played, scoring 45.5 ppg. Drexel scored 80-68 points in the two games they won. Hawks are 4-2, shooting 44% from arc, with losses to Seton Hall by 8, Iona in double OT. Atlantic 14 home favorites are 12-4, 5-0 if spread is 6 or less points; CAA road favorites of 6 are 2-7.
Pittsburgh won its last nine games vs crosstown rival Duquesne, taking wins by 9(2ot)/14 points last two years, when game switched to arena downtown, more neutral site. Panthers are 5-1, making 44.6% from arc. Dukes scored 81+ in its three wins, 59-68 in its two losses, at Arizona by 8, by 16 at Valparaiso. Atlantic 14 underdogs of 6 or less points are 10-5vs spread; Big East favorites of 6 or less are 7-6.
NC State is 5-1 in first year under Gottfried, losing to Vanderbilt by 7, beating Texas by 3 after trailing by 18; Wolfpack are making 52.8% of its 2-point shots, are top 30 team on offensive boards. Indiana has wins by 16 over Butler, 21 at Evansville (only previous road game). Hoosiers are supposed to be much-improved. ACC home teams are 2-4 vs spread when number is 5 or less points; Big Dozen road teams are 10-4.
Boston College lost four of last five games, with only win in overtime vs #242 Cal-Riverside; Eagles' only other win was by 3 vs New Hampshire, ranked #282. Penn State is 5-2, but lost by 18 at St Joe's in only road game; Lions are making just 41% of 2-point shots, 58% from foul line. Very poor. ACC home underdogs are 0-3 vs spread; Big Dozen road favorites of 6 or less points are 8-2. Not much to choose from here.
Michigan State won last four games after 0-2 start, but none of those wins were over top 100 teams. This is first true road game for Florida State squad that lost two of three in Bahamas over weekend, losing to Harvard/UConn by combined total of 7 points. Seminoles are weak at guard, tunring ball over on 25% of possessions. ACC road underdogs are 6-9 vs spread; Big Dozen home favorites of 5+ points are 14-4-1.
Home side won six of last seven Colorado-Colorado State games, with Buffs losing two of last three visits here, losing by 1-15 points. Buffs won last three games by total of 10 points, hanging on to beat Georgia by hoop at home Monday. Rams were held to 52-58 points in its two losses, by 12 to Stanford, 21 to Southern Miss. Mountain West home favorites of 8 or less points are 5-4; Pac-12 road underdogs of 6 or less points are 4-8.
Northern Iowa won four of last five games vs Iowa State, with only loss in OT three years ago; Panthers won last two visits here, 61-48/63-60. Both teams were in South Padre over weekend, but didn't play. UNI is 5-1, with only loss by 16 at St Mary's. Cyclones are 5-1, losing to Drake of MVC; this is their first game vs top 100 opponent. Missouri Valley road underdogs are 10-5 vs spread; Big X home favorites of 12 or less points are 4-2 vs spread.
Minnesota lost its best player Mbakwe to knee injury over weekend, a huge blow; Gophers are 6-1, losing Orlando final to Dayton; best team they've beaten is #95 Indiana State. This is first true road game for the Hokies, who lost to Syracuse by 11, beat Oklahoma State by a hoop in two games on neutral court in NYC. Virginia Tech is shooting 40.2% from the arc. Big Dozen home favorites of 12 or less points are 4-2.
North Carolina's star Barnes has gimpy ankle, is ?able here; Tar Heels lost at UNLV Saturday after Barnes got hurt in first half. Wisconsin won its first six games, beating BYU by 17 in its only game vs top 200 team. This is Badgers' first true road game. Carolina better not look past this game to Kentucky game Saturday. ACC home faves of 13 or less points are 9-3 vs spread; Big Dozen road dogs of more than 5 points are 1-4.
UNLV just had great win over North Carolina, now has trap game at old rival UCSB, which won last three games vs Rebels by 3-3-6 points. This is first road game for UNLV; UNC game was their only game vs top 100 team. Gauchos lost in OT to San Diego State last game; they don't force lot of turnovers, but they force misses, and UNLV sometimes struggles to make shots. Big West underdogs of 8 or less points are 5-2 vs spread; MWC road favorites are 3-1.
San Diego State is 7-1, winning last four games, all by 4 points or less, with wins at Arizona/UCSB in last two; Aztecs have lot of new players from LY, but they're playing with great poise. THE STORY: Fifth-ranked North Carolina looks to rebound from a stunning early-season loss when it hosts No. 7 Wisconsin as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels were a nearly unanimous No. 1 before suffering a 90-80 defeat against UNLV in Las Vegas Saturday. The Badgers, meanwhile, are coming off a 73-56 rout of Brigham Young. UNC sophomore forward Harrison Barnes (ankle) is not at full strength but is still expected to play.
ABOUT WISCONSIN (6-0): The Badgers led all Division I teams in most major defensive categories, including points allowed (39.2) and opponent field-goal percentage (30.5), but that defense will be tested by a UNC team averaging 88 points per game. Wisconsin is also outrebounding its opponents by nearly 14 per game.
