Seton Hall Pirates at Syracuse Orange (-15.5, N/A)
There are plenty of spots on the Big East schedule to stumble, and No. 1 Syracuse knows that list includes Seton Hall, especially after last season. The Pirates shot 59 percent from 3-point range and routed the Orange in a 90-68 at the Carrier Dome. They'll try to repeat the performance Wednesday in the teams' Big East opener at Syracuse.
Even though Seton Hall’s leading scorer from that game has moved on, the defeat sticks with this Syracuse team, including sophomore Dion Waiters, who said he had this game circled on his calendar. The Pirates are off to their best start since 1992-93, when they won the conference.
Senior Herb Pope is skilled enough to carry Seton Hall back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. Pope was a member of the supporting cast in last year’s upset at Syracuse, but this season he is averaging a double-double (20.3 points, 11.4 rebounds) and put together a string of four straight 20-plus point games this month.
Pope’s board work inside could keep Seton Hall within striking distance, as the Orange rank 11th in the Big East in rebounding margin.

Villanova Wildcats at West Virginia Mountaineers (-8, N/A)
Teams projected to finish smack in the middle of the Big East scrum square off in Morgantown, W. Va., as Villanova and West Virginia begin their conference schedule Wednesday.
The Mountaineers were picked seventh and the Wildcats eighth in the Big East preseason poll, and between them West Virginia senior Kevin Jones was the lone selection among three preseason all-league teams.
Jones was named Big East Player of the Week after averaging 23 points and 14.7 rebounds and hitting 31-of-55 shots against Tennessee Tech, Missouri State and Baylor. The senior forward averages a double-double (21 points, 11.9 rebounds), and contributed his eighth this season with 28 points and 17 boards in Friday's 83-81 loss to Baylor in the Las Vegas Classic.
Villanova is 5-0 at home but just 1-5 in road and neutral-site games, including losses at rivals Temple and Saint Joseph's in which the hosts broke things open in the second half to win by double digits.

College basketball fans will get their first real taste of conference play this week when the Big East and Big Ten begin their conference schedules with a number of key matchups. This week also provides a final chance to see some of the other top schools in the country butt heads against one another in a non-conference matchup before the start of their conference play right after the New Year.
The following is a brief look at the top matchups for each day this week along with a few facts and figures to help handicap the games.
No. 17 Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. No. 7 Baylor Bears
The Bulldogs have reeled-off 11 straight victories ever since an ugly 68-58 loss to Akron as nine-point home favorites on Nov. 9. They are now 12-1 SU and 7-5 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of the 12 games. Mississippi State is averaging 77.2 points a game and shooting 47.8 percent from the floor.
Baylor brings a spotless 12-0 SU record into this game and a 4-1 record ATS. The Bears are ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring with 79.6 points a game and shooting 50.2 percent from the field. Defensively, they have held their opponents to just 59.3 points per game.
NCAAB Preview
Northwestern lost four in row, 12 of last 13 games vs Ohio State, but in LY's games, they lost by 1 at home, then in OT in Big 11 tourney- they lost last seven visits here by 8-13-9-32-11-5-20 points. Wildcats are 1-1 on road, losing by 8 at Creighton, winning at Georgia Tech- their other loss was at home to Baylor by 28. Buckeyes are 12-1, 2-1 vs top 100 teams (all in top 15), beating Florida by 7, Duke by 22, losing by 11 at Kansas when Sullinger didn't play.
Home side won four of last five Georgetown-Louisville games; Hoyas won two of last three visits here, are 4-2 in last six series games overall, winning 70-60/62-59 in last two meetings. Georgetown won by hoop at Alabama in only road game; they split with Kansas/Memphis on neutral floor in Maui Classic- they beat Memphis again by 11 at home Saturday in last game. Big week for 12-0 Cardinals, with Kentucky game on deck Saturday. Louisville is #4 defensive team in country right now.
Villanova is 3-2 in last five games vs West Virginia, with underdogs 5-3 SU in last eight meetings; Wildcats lost three of last four visits here, with losses by 7-11-21 points. Villanova is 1-4 vs teams in top 170, beating city rival LaSalle in OT; their losses to teams in top 60 are by 12-10-11-16 points. West Virginia is very young, with only three guys back from LY; they're 5-3 vs top teams, splitting pair of OT games in Vegas last week, beating Missouri State, losing in double OT to Baylor.
Seton Hall (+13) came to Carrier Dome LY and pounded Syracuse 90-68 in one of season's biggest upsets, ending 5-game series skid, Pirates split last four visits here- favorites are 6-3 vs spread in series. 11-1 Seton Hall is 3-1 vs top 100 teams, losing to Northwestern by 7, beating St Joe's, VCU on neutral floor, winning at Dayton, but experienced, deep Orange are major step up from those teams. 13-0 Syracuse forces turnovers on 28.1% of possessions (#4); tough game for young Seton Hall squad.
Michigan State won its last five games vs Indiana, with three of the five wins by 14+ points; Hoosiers lost last six visits here, by 12-14-8-9-28-1 point, with 84-83 loss in OT here LY. 12-0 Indiana is obviously hell of a lot better this year- they're 2-0 on road, winning by 21 at Evansville, 11 at NC State in only road games- they've beaten three three teams in top 100 (Kentucky/NC State/Notre Dame). Spartans won last 11 games, as they beat Gonzaga by 11, Florida St by 16- two best teams they beat.
Missouri State won last four games vs Creighton, beating Bluejays three times LY, including 60-50 in MVC tourney, but Bears' win here LY was their first in last six visits to Omaha, with losses by 3-22-21-24-4 prior to that. State is 0-5 vs top 100 teams, losing by 5-16-5-2-16 points, 7-0 vs everyone else- best team they've beaten is #104 Nevada, they lost in OT to West Va on neutral floor last week. 10-1 Creighton shoots 44.7% from arc- they're 2-1 vs top 100 teams, beating San Diego St/N'western.
Wichita State beat Bradley three times LY, by 16-20-14 points, part of why Braves changed coaches; Shockers are 4-4 in last eight visits here. Wichita won by 10 at Tulsa in only previous road game, but they also beat UNLV by 19 at handing Rebels their first loss. Braves lost seven of last nine games, losing at home to #222 Western Carolina; they lost by 23-17-11 points in only three games vs top 100 teams. Shockers better not be looking ahead to Saturday's game with once-beaten Creighton.
Indiana State won its last six games vs Drake, winning by 14-5 points in last two visits here; 9-2 Sycamores are 2-1 on road, with an upset win at Vanderbilt- they shoot 27.7% from arc, 75.3% from line. Drake is 6-0 at home this year with a win over #74 Iowa State (other home victims are all ranked #168 or lower); they lost by 4-8 points to Ole Miss/Virginia in only two games vs top 100 teams. Indiana State has four seniors in its top seven players, good for playing on the road.
12-0 Baylor might be best team in country, winning at Northwestern by 28, winning at BYU, beating St Mary's/West Virginia on a neutral floor; they force turnovers on 24.7% of possessions, block 17.1% of shots by opponents. 12-1 Mississippi State beat Texas A&M/Arizona in NYC, won by 5 at Detroit, but have been at home otherwise, playing schedule ranked #307. Big 12 single digit favorites are 14-12 vs spread. SEC road underdogs of less than 10 points are 14-8 against the spread.
New Mexico State outscored New Mexico 36-22 in second half of 62-53 upset win at the Pit Nov 16, holding Lobos to 28% from floor, surviving 21-38 shooting from foul line. State hasn't played as well since, losing 4 of 7 vs D-I teams since, with last two wins over #333/273 teams. Lobos won last eight games, with three top 75 wins (Wash St/Missouri St/Okla St); they're 2-0 in true road games, winning by 5 at Arizona State, 3 at USC. If State doesn't get to foul line a lot, they can't beat you.
UConn won five of last six games vs South Florida, losing last visit here but winning two before that by 1-13 points. Bulls covered five of last six in series, but are 4-6 in last ten games overall, with three losses by four or less points. USF is 6-0 at home, but #87 Cleveland State is only top 140 team they've played at home. First true road game for UConn team that ranks #335 in experience- they won two of three in tournament on neutral floor in Bahamas last month, losing to #122 Central Florida.
Purdue lost 67-65 at Iowa LY, ending 8-game series win streak; Boilers won three of last four visits here, winning by 5-4-11 points. 10-3 Purdue is 2-3 away from home, losing by 3 at Xavier, by 2 to Butler on neutral floor- best teams they've beaten are #37 Temple/#42 Iona, with both on neutral floor. Hawkeyes are 0-4 vs top 100 teams, with 10-point loss at Iowa State the closest game. #111 Boise State is best team they beat. Hard to lay points on road with Purdue team shooting 62% from line.
Eastern Washington lost six of last seven visits to Montana State, losing by 24-17-12-5-4-12 points (their win was two years ago); Eastern lost its last four games vs D-I teams- they're fouling more than any team in country, but they do have wins at Hawai'i/Idaho. Bobcats have been off for eight days, are 3-6, 0-2 vs teams in top 200, losing to New Mexico by 45, Idaho by 9- they've lost to three teams ranked below #200.
