Every March, the threat of Big Dance "bubble thieves" is usually a false alarm. Yet as we move to the precipice of Selection Sunday, we know for sure that the bubble has shrunk by at least one spot over the past 24 hours, and the door remains open for a couple of others as the next chapter of conference tourney drama unfolds on Saturday.

Who are those thieves? One will almost certainly come from the Mountain West, which now appears to be a two-bid league after conference tourney top seed Nevada was flattened by a surging San Diego State on Friday night in Las Vegas. With the Wolf Pack's bid apparently secure, the opportunity now awaits for the Aztecs or Saturday foe New Mexico (quietly surging with seven wins on the trot into Saturday) to earning the Mountain's auto bid. The extra day off might even help a dangerous but thin Wolf Pack roster. whose main Friday damage (other than to the team psyche) could be a seed demotion. Which in the long run could prove problematic; if Nevada drops into an 8-9 game instead of hanging on the 6-line where we projected the Pack before Friday, the San Diego State loss could have more serious consequences in Reno. Nonetheless, the Mountain West looks like a multi-bid league for the first time since 2015.

There are other potential "bubble thieves" lurking as well. In the Atlantic 10, an ascending St. Joseph's and dangerous Davidson have qualified for the semifinals of the conference tourney on Saturday at Cap One Arena in Washington, D.C. With St. Bonaventure having apparently moved safely from the cut line in recent weeks and Rhode Island secure, a couple of more upsets by the Hawks or Wildcats would make the A-10 a 3-bid league. Saturday's semis presents a couple of intriguing rematches from a week ago Tuesday, when Phil Martelli's Hawks scored a shocking 30-point road win over the Rams and Davidson pushed the Bonnies into 3 OTs in Olean in what might have been the game of the year. They'll all do it again on Saturday...stay tuned. Meanwhile we've still got Conference USA, where Marshall and Western Kentucky vie for the auto bid that went off script on Thursday when heavy tourney favorite Middle Tennessee was dumped in the quarterfinals by longshot Southern Miss. The Blue Raiders, however, are hardly as secure in their at-large status as Nevada from the Mountain West, or. should upsets occur on Saturday in the A-10, either Rhody or Bona. At worst, however, MTSU would appear to be hanging around the cut line, and likely cheering for Western Kentucky, a team the Blue Raiders beat twice, in the finale at Frisco.

So, we're looking at a certainty of one Big Dance bubble thief and as many as three as of Saturday morning. Which has goosed the drama meter just a bit more before Selection Sunday.

Other developments on Friday happened further down the food chain, where there were a couple of upsets in mid and low-major leagues that changed some projected qualifiers in the Big West (where both favored UC Davis and UCSB went down), and in the Southland, where the projected qualifier of many, Nicholls, was KO'd by Stephen F Austin (though that does not qualify as an upset as the victorious Lumberjacks were favored in the game). Champions in those leagues and others will be determined on Saturday, which includes an all-Orange County battle in the Big West between UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

At the bubble, the big winner for the second day in a row was Alabama, which picked up another valuable Quadrant 1 neutral win (over Auburn). Thus, while most of those on the cut line have stayed parked in neutral and done little to enhance their profiles in conference tourney week, Bama has significantly bolstered its credentials. Yes, it's the same Tide that had lost five straight entering the SEC Tourney, but the trending suddenly looks good for the prospects of Avery Johnson's team. We'd also be remiss if not mentioning Providence, which by all accounts had already moved safely away from the cut line, but now appears to be making a late move up the seed ladder with another valuable win over projected top-line Xavier. The Friars now appear to be into the single-digit seed category, though that could turn into a curse if Providence lands on the 8 of 9 line (as it appears could be the case) instead of 10 or 11. We shouldn't be surprised, however, as Ed Cooley's team won the Big East Tourney as recently as 2014, and another win on Saturday over Villanova might rocket the Friars further ahead in the seeding queue.

Lastly, mention of the Xavier loss on Friday reminds that another lane to the top-line might have suddenly opened up for Duke, which was becoming a chic pick to grab a number one seed on Selection Sunday if it could win the ACC Tourney, and either Kansas (in the Big 12) or Musketeers (in the Big East) went down. Any such ideas, however, are now dashed as the Blue Devils lost to North Carolina and now wait to hear if they are placed on the 2 or 3-line. Might the Tar Heels land on the 1-line if they can beat Virginia for the ACC crown on Saturday? Unlikely, as Carolina looks destined for the 2-line or 3-line depending upon its result vs. the Cavs on Saturday night in Brooklyn. Elsewhere, Auburn's status as a protected seed is now subject to review after the collapse on Friday vs. Bama in the aforementioned SEC quarterfinals. Moving into position to leapfrog the Tigers and onto our 4-line is Bob Huggins' West Virginia, which qualified for the Big 12 finale vs. Kansas with a hard-fought win over Texas Tech in Kansas City on Friday night.

Following are the latest seed projections as of Saturday morning. Not too late, however, for some things to change in the next 24 hours; remember, a number of bubble thieves are still lurking. Teams with auto-bids as of Saturday morning are noted by an *.

Update - Friday, Mar. 9

We’re at the end of the road for our “Bracketology” updates this season, as Selection Sunday looms this weekend. Thursday action provided the latest opportunity to update our projected field, with several developments.

Boise State was at the top of the list of teams that hurt themselves on Thursday; the Broncos are now NIT-bound after the Mountain West quartefinal loss to Utah State. Middle Tennessee has put its bid in serious jeopardy by getting KO’d in the Conference USA quarters.

The likes of Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Marquette had chances at big wins, and while losses to their power team foes don’t necessarily hurt their profiles, given the timing they were huge opportunities missed.

The biggest winner of Thursday was probably Alabama, which actually notched a road/neutral quality win over Texas A&M (in thrilling fashion) at the SEC Tourney to stay on the cut-line.

Providence was not in as much risk as 'Bama but nonetheless should have cemented its place in the field of 68 with a Big East Tourney win over Creighton.

Meanwhile, UCLA and Southern Cal avoided potential damaging losses in the Pac-12 Tourney, which was as good as either side could have done on Thursday.

Potential bid thieves are still alive in many remaining tourneys save the ACC, Big East, and Big 12, and any ongoing low-major tourneys. But into Friday, bid thieves still lurk in the Pac-12, SEC, A-10, American, Conference USA, and the Mountain West.

To finish our ongoing Big Dance projections, one final look at how we believe the eventual seeds are going to sort out, as we see them on the evening of March 8. Teams with auto-bids as of Thursday night are noted by an *.

Davidson Wildcats vs. Rhode Island Rams Preview and Predictions 03-11-2018

10th March 2018 by Gracenote
No. 1 seed Rhode Island will play for the Atlantic 10 Tournament title in back-to-back seasons for the first time ever when it battles No. 3 Davidson on Sunday at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The defending champion Rams overcame an 11-point deficit to knock out No. 4 Saint Joseph's in the semifinals to earn the right to face the Wildcats, who likely need to win to make the NCAA Tournament.

Andre Berry had 14 points in the first half - more than he's scored in a game in over month - to help keep his team in it while E.C. Matthews and Fatts Russell combined for 21 points in the second half to help lift the Rams, who lost to the Hawks by 30 points Feb. 27. "We have championship culture and championship DNA and we showed it in a game we had to fight our tails off to win," URI coach Dan Hurley told reporters following the 90-87 semifinal win. "We talked about what it felt like last year (after winning the title), landing at T.F. Green (Airport) and having hundreds of fans waiting and we want to experience that again." The title game will be a rematch of the regular season finale for both teams, which Davidson won 63-61 by scoring the final nine points of the game to erase a seven-point deficit. The Wildcats, who got 47 points from Kellan Grady and Peyton Aldridge in upsetting No. 2 seed St. Bonaventure 82-70 in the semifinals, will be making their first ever appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament final in their fourth season in the conference.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT DAVIDSON (20-11): Grady and Aldridge were limited to a combined 34 points in both meetings against Rhode Island this season but Jon Axel Gudmundsson and Will Magarity stepped up in the second meeting and may need to again barring a big night from one of the stars. Gudmundsson, a sophomore guard from Iceland, and reserve guard Rusty Reigel, each had eight assists and the Wildcats finished with 23 on 28 made field goals in the semifinal win. "Absolutely thrilled with our performance tonight," 29th-year head coach Bob McKillop, who led the Wildcats to seven Southern Conference Tournament titles, told the media. "Making shots (56 percent overall and 55.2 percent from 3-point range) really saved the game for us."

ABOUT RHODE ISLAND (25-6): Jeff Dowtin had another strong game in the semifinal, putting up 16 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and zero turnovers. The sophomore point guard, whose 3-pointer with 19 seconds left sealed the win, is averaging 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the conference tournament. "We saw last year, since he's been in the lineup, he's been a game-changer for us," Hurley told the media of Dowtin, who is third nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.32). "Great leader and he's got the physical attributes. He was a shockingly under-recruited player and we were fortunate to get him."

TIP-INS

1. Rhode Island can become the first team to win back-to-back Atlantic 10 Tournament titles since Temple won three straight from 2008 to 2010.

2. The Wildcats are 10-2 since the end of January with the losses coming to Rhode Island 72-59 Feb. 9 and St. Bonaventure 117-113 in triple overtime Feb. 27.

3. Senior G Jarvis Garrett hit a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions midway through the second half to keep it a two-possession game and added five assists for the Rams, who have won 90 games in the last four years, matching their most ever in a four-year span.

PREDICTION: Davidson 74, Rhode Island 71

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Tennessee Volunteers Preview and Predictions 03-11-2018

10th March 2018 by Gracenote
No. 4 seed Kentucky is playing some of its best basketball of the season at the right time and looks to record a fourth consecutive SEC Tournament Championship when it takes on second-seeded Tennessee on Sunday in St. Louis. The Wildcats allowed 49 points in the quarterfinals and scored an 86-63 triumph against Alabama in the semifinals Saturday for their sixth victory in the last seven games after losing four straight.

"They're growing up," Kentucky coach John Calipari told reporters. "The best thing that happened to my team, not me personally, was the four losses in a row. ... They needed to be told you're not good enough, and you're not going to do this by yourself. You've got to unpack your bags, and let's get this together as a team." No. 12 Tennessee poses a very difficult challenge while riding a six-game winning streak, and the Volunteers have beaten the Wildcats twice this season - by 11 at home in early January and by two at Kentucky on Feb. 6. Tennessee edged Mississippi State in the quarterfinals before rolling past Arkansas 84-66 in the semifinals to reach its first SEC final since 2009 and give itself a chance for its first title since 1979. "We just have a standard we're trying to play towards," Volunteers junior forward Admiral Schofield told reporters. "The biggest thing is we try to go out to every game with that mindset, like we're trying to perfect our standard. We haven't done that yet, so we're a hungry team. We still want more."

TV: 1 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT KENTUCKY (23-10): Sophomore Wenyen Gabriel drained all seven attempts from 3-point range on Saturday en route to scoring a career high-matching 23, leading the way after the 6-9 forward arrived Saturday averaging just 6.1 points. "I came in with more focus, and I just let it fly," Gabriel told reporters after the win. "My teammates trusted me, and the shots fell today." Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 17 points and 8.5 assists in the SEC Tournament, while forward P.J. Washington has contributed 16 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in this event.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (25-7): The Volunteers have been a balanced group offensively and received big games from a pair of players outside their top four scorers in the semifinals. Sophomore guard Jordan Bone scored 19 on 8-of-11 shooting after 10 straight games in single digits and 6-11 forward Kyle Alexander scored 12 against Arkansas after totaling 13 in his previous five contests. Schofield is averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the tournament while SEC Player of the Year Grant Williams is contributing 11 and eight, respectively, but is 5-of-17 from the field.

TIP-INS

1. Tennessee sophomore G Lamonte Turner has drained 9-of-18 from 3-point range the last four games and is at 40.5 percent for the season.

2. Kentucky F Kevin Knox, a first team All-SEC pick, leads the team at 15.5 points per game but is 13-for-34 from the field the last three contests.

3. Volunteers senior G James Daniel III scored in double figures (12) for the first time in 11 games and had no turnovers in 22 minutes Saturday.

PREDICTION: Kentucky 72, Tennessee 68

Texas Arlington vs. Georgia State Preview and Predictions - ScoresAndStats.com

10th March 2018
No. 4 seed Texas-Arlington did the unexpected by upsetting top-seeded Louisiana 71-68 as seven-point underdogs to reach the championship game. The Mavericks now have won five straight (4-1 ATS) since being routed by Louisiana 90-71 on Feb. 17. The Ragin' Cajuns rolled through the conference season with a 16-2 record, winning by double-digits 15 times, but couldn’t handle the Mavericks down the stretch, when UTA scored the game’s final four points on free throws. Erick Neal led UTA with 18 points and five assists, following up on his 37-point performance in the Mavericks’ quarterfinal win over Appalachian State. Kaelon Wilson added 17 points, including 12 in the second half against ULL.

Georgia State jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead and held on for a 73-67 victory over in-state rival Georgia Southern in their semifinal. The 2nd-seeded Panthers were led by Isaiah Williams’ 21 points off the bench, while Jordan Session added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Jeff Thomas scored 13. It was an off-game for Sun Belt Player of the Year D’Marcus Simonds, who scored only six points, committed five turnovers and fouled out. In the quarterfinals, Georgia State cruised to a wire-to-wire 73-51 victory over Troy, who had beaten them twice in the regular season. Things were never in doubt, as Georgia State again jumped to a big halftime advantage.

TV: 2:00 pm ET ESPN2

ABOUT TEXAS-ARLINGTON (21-12, 11-8): The Mavericks can score — 78 points per game, good enough for 2nd in the Sun Belt and 68th in the country. But they allowed 73 points per game — just 10th in the conference and 217th in the nation. Offensively, it’s a two-man show of 6-7 forward Kevin Hervey (21.1 points per game) and 6-2 guard Erick Neal (16.2). The two seniors are among nine players on Coach Scott Cross’ roster who are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Hervey also leads with 8.7 rebounds per game, Neal averages a team-leading 7.0 assists, and 7-0 senior center Johnny Hamilton has 73 blocked shots.

ABOUT GEORGIA STATE (23-10, 14-6 ): The Panthers limited conference opponents to a second-best 68.0 points per game while averaging 75.5 points per game (6th in the conference). Simonds, a 6-3 sophomore guard, averages 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Malik Benlevi is the leading rebounder at 6.5 per game. Georgia State has been a very solid ATS team on the road (11-4), in contrast to 5-6 in home games. However, they entered the conference tournament on a 2-4 ATS slide, but have covered their last three.

TIP-INS

1. In two regular-season matchups, the Mavericks (89-81) and Panthers (81-75) both won at home as short favorites. Both games sailed over totals of 149.5 and 144.

2. Texas-Arlington plays high-scoring games on the road — 10 of 14 finished Over the total.

3. Georgia State will be playing for the conference title for the third time in the last four seasons.

PREDICTION: Texas-Arlington 78 Georgia State 72

Houston Cougars vs. Cincinnati Bearcats Preview and Predictions 03-11-2018

10th March 2018 by Gracenote
No. 8 Cincinnati can make its final statement toward earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday when the top-seeded Bearcats face third-seeded Houston in the American Athletic Conference Tournament final in Orlando. Cincinnati has won six in a row and, with only four losses all season, is certainly in the mix to be on the top line when the Field of 68 is announced Sunday, while 21st-ranked Houston is comfortably in the field, as well.

The Bearcats have defeated SMU (61-51) and Memphis (70-60) in their first two games of this event as Gary Clark has averaged 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. Jarron Cumberland added 18 points versus Memphis after going scoreless against SMU, giving Houston one more weapon to worry about in the championship game. The Cougars rode Rob Gray's 33 points to a 77-74 win over Wichita State on Saturday, earning a trip to the AAC title game for the first time. Houston knows it can beat Cincinnati, as it did as recently as Feb. 15 when it snapped the Bearcats' national-best winning streak at 16 games.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT HOUSTON (26-6): The Cougars only had seven turnovers in Saturday's win and that proved to be the difference, along with 7-of-15 combined 3-point shooting by Gray and Corey Davis Jr. The other three starters for Houston combined for only 13 points, although Nura Zanna did register a team-high nine rebounds off the bench. Gray has reached the 30-point plateau in two of his last three games and is averaging 24.7 points over his last six outings.

ABOUT CINCINNATI (29-4): The Bearcats committed only three turnovers against Memphis, which was critical because the team shot barely above 40 percent from the field for the second straight game. Kyle Washington contributed double-digit points for the fourth straight game but missed both of his 3-pointers, dropping him to 2-of-12 from outside the arc over the last four games. Jacob Evans is 1-of-11 from long distance over the last two outings and has made only 4-of-17 shots during that span, totaling nine points - four below his season average.

TIP-INS

1. The Bearcats have previously won 30 games in a season twice - in 2001-02 and in 2016-17.

2. Houston starting F Breaon Brady has gone 10 straight games without attempting more than three shots.

3. Davis is 9-of-12 from 3-point range against Cincinnati this season.

PREDICTION: Houston 66, Cincinnati 60
