Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Boston College Eagles Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Boston College has concluded its winningest season since 2010-11 and looks to extend that success into the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday against Georgia Tech at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The No. 12-seed Eagles won seven games in conference play this season - sparked by league player-of-the-year runner-up Jerome Robinson and his ACC-leading 20.7 points per game - but struggled down the stretch in Saturday's 85-76 defeat at Florida State.

"We lost our composure and got away with what was working," Boston College coach Jim Christian told the media after the loss to the Seminoles, the fourth setback in the Eagles' past five games. The 13th-seeded Yellow Jackets lost seven league games in a row before winning their final two games of the regular season, earning victories over North Carolina State and Wake Forest last week. Josh Okogie hit six free throws in the final 17 seconds of Saturday's 64-56 victory over the Demon Deacons, and enters the tournament averaging a team-best 18.4 points per game. "The bench and the guys have been great all year long, even through some tough stretches," Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told reporters afterward. "Guys have stayed positive and upbeat."

TV: Noon ET, ESPN2

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (13-18): Okogie, a sophomore who surpassed 1,000 career points Saturday, missed the first eight games of the season but returned to shoot 38.3 percent from 3-point range and reach double-figures scoring in 21 of his 23 games. Tadric Jackson averages 12.1 points per game and has taken over at point guard following the season-ending elbow injury to freshman Jose Alvarado. The Yellow Jackets allow 67.3 points per game, fourth in the ACC and 47th in the nation.

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (17-14): Robinson enjoyed a stellar regular season, averaging 24.3 points per game in ACC contests while hitting 44.5 percent of his 3-point attempts in league action. Fellow guard Ky Bowman is the only player in the nation to average at least 16.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game this season. Boston College leads the ACC in made 3-pointers per game (8.8) and the Eagles are one of just three teams in the nation to have a trio of players (Jordan Chatman, Robinson and Bowman) to make at least 73 3-pointers this season.

TIP-INS

1. The opening-round matchup will not be strange territory for either program, as the two schools meet in the ACC Tournament opener for the fourth time in the past six years (the Eagles won in 2013 and 2015; Georgia Tech won in 2014).

2. Boston College won the only meeting between the two teams this season, getting key baskets from Bowman in overtime of an 80-72 home victory Feb. 4.

3. Tuesday's winner faces fifth-seed North Carolina State at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, with that survivor advancing to Thursday's quarterfinals against fourth-seed Clemson.

PREDICTION: Boston College 73, Georgia Tech 64

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Notre Dame finally has a healthy lineup as it attempts to make a run in the ACC Tournament, which starts with a matchup against 15th seed Pittsburgh on Tuesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Senior forward Bonzie Colson has averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds in two games since his return from a broken foot for the 10th-seeded Fighting Irish, who gave No. 1 Virginia all it could handle in a 62-57 setback Saturday.

"In the midst of trying to put ourselves back together, I told them, 'I think we're back,' with Bonzie and playing like we were before the injury," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, who needs one victory for 500 in his career, told reporters after the loss. "Even though we didn't win, I really like what we got out of that (Saturday)." The Irish, who are 12-4 with Colson in the lineup, will most likely need multiple wins in the ACC tournament to open the eyes of the NCAA committee to earn a bid in the Big Dance and knocking off a young Pittsburgh squad is essential. The Panthers have lost a program-record 18 consecutive games - all in ACC play - and were beaten by double figures in 15 of them, including a 73-56 decision at Notre Dame on Wednesday. "I admire them because they haven't stopped battling and haven't stopped trying," Pittsburgh coach Kevin Stallings told reporters of his team.

TV: 2 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (8-23): Junior guard Jared Wilson-Frame scored 20 in the loss against the Irish and is the only active Panther averaging in double figures (12.8) while draining 71 shots from 3-point range. Marcus Carr (9.7 points, 4.1 assists) has connected on only 7-of-35 from the field the last four games while fellow freshman guard Parker Stewart (8.9 points) is scoring 12 per game over the past six. Freshman guard Shamiel Stevenson (8.7 points) scored 10 versus Notre Dame and freshman forward Terrell Brown added 10 points, eight boards and five blocks in the loss.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (18-13): Brey told reporters having Colson (20.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 1.6 steals), "adds so much confidence and energy. Those guys missed him, they missed his edge and confidence." The Irish were also 1-4 when Matt Farrell was out with an ankle injury and the senior guard contributes 16.8 points with team highs of 5.3 assists and 86 made 3-pointers while being named third team All-ACC. Sophomore guard T.J. Gibbs (15.6 points, 72 made 3-pointers) had scored in double figures in 18 straight games before being held to eight by Virginia on Saturday.

TIP-INS

1. Notre Dame senior F Martinas Geben boasts two double-doubles in the last three games, averaging 15 points and 12.3 boards in that span.

2. Stewart has connected on a Pittsburgh freshman record 67 attempts from 3-point range, but was 0-for-5 from long range versus the Irish last week.

3. The winner plays seventh-seeded Virginia Tech in Wednesday's second round.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame 78, Pittsburgh 61

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Syracuse and Wake Forest clash for the third time this season Tuesday as the 11th-seeded Orange and the 14th-seeded Demon Deacons meet in the first round of the ACC Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The teams split the two meetings this season, with Wake Forest winning 73-67 at home Jan. 3 and Syracuse returning the favor 78-70 on Feb. 11.

The Orange come in feeling good about themselves after boosting their NCAA Tournament hopes with a much-needed marquee win as they edged No. 20 Clemson in their regular-season finale Saturday. "It was extremely important, the biggest win we've had all year. For us to gut that one out and get the win is good for us," sophomore guard Tyus Battle told reporters after the game. Wake Forest's final regular-season game didn't go as well as it fell 64-56 at Georgia Tech on Saturday for its second consecutive loss. The Demon Deacons were within two points with 36.9 seconds remaining, but Bryant Crawford got called for a charge and Georgia Tech's Josh Okogie nailed six free throws in the final 17 seconds to put the game away.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (11-19): Crawford, the team's leading scorer (16.7), had 22 to lead Wake Forest against Georgia Tech for his ninth 20-point game of the season and sixth in conference play. Doral Moore, a 7-1 junior center, added 12 points and 13 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and was one of just two players to average a double-double in ACC action - with Duke's Marvin Bagley III being the other. Taking care of the ball will be key for the Demon Deacons if they hope to move on as they committed a season-high 22 turnovers on Saturday - including eight from Crawford - which led to 19 points for the Yellow Jackets.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (19-12): Battle and freshman forward Oshae Brissett each had 17 points to lead the way against Clemson and both were recognized by the league on Sunday, with Battle earning All-ACC second team honors and Brissett being named to the All-ACC freshman team. Battle is the offensive leader for the Orange and finished the season ranked third in ACC scoring at 20 points per game on 41 percent shooting while leading the NCAA in minutes per game (38.9). Junior guard Frank Howard, who is second in the nation at 38.4 minutes per game, is also key to Syracuse's success and is fifth in the conference with five assists per game while sitting first in the ACC in steals (1.8).

TIP-INS

1. Syracuse is 0-3 in conference postseason since joining the ACC five years ago.

2. Wake Forest is third in the ACC from behind the arc at 38.2 percent.

3. The winner will play sixth-seeded North Carolina on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.

PREDICTION: Syracuse 62, Wake Forest 58

Brigham Young Cougars vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

6th March 2018 by Gracenote
The West Coast Conference Tournament has been referred to as the Gonzaga Invitational by some college basketball experts, and for good reason. The No. 6 Zags, who advanced to the WCC title game for an amazing 21st consecutive year, will try to win their sixth straight WCC tourney and defeat BYU for the third time this season when they face the Cougars on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Top-seeded Gonzaga, which has won 16 consecutive WCC Tournament games and comes in on a 13-game winning streak, cruised into the finals with a 88-60 blowout of San Francisco on Monday as 6-foot-10 sophomore forward Killian Tillie celebrated his 20th birthday with a game-high 26 points, connecting on 10-of-11 shots including 5-of-5 3-pointers. "It's an unbelievable streak we have going," Gonzaga coach Mark Few told the Spokane Spokesman-Review on reaching 21 straight championship games. "It's never easy." The Zags will play sixth-seeded BYU, which upset 19th-ranked Saint Mary's 85-72 and has given the Zags a few problems since joining the WCC. The Cougars won three straight in Spokane from 2015-17, including a 79-71 victory last season when Gonzaga was 29-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT BYU (24-9): The Cougars are led in scoring by a pair of first team all-WCC picks in 6-foot-5 junior guard Elijah Bryant (18.1) and 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Yoeli Childs (17.9), who also leads the team in rebounding (8.6). Childs scored a career-high 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting, including 3-of-3 3-pointers, and had six rebounds while Bryant finished with 25 points in Monday's night's semifinal upset of Saint Mary's as BYU shot a blistering 61 percent from the floor. Sophomore guard TJ Haws also averages in double figures (12.0) and had seven assists and no turnovers in 40 minutes against the Gaels to go along with 11 points.

ABOUT GONZAGA (29-4): Tillie is 10-for-10 from 3-point range in the tournament, connecting on 19-of-23 shots while averaging 25 points. Senior forward Johnathan Williams leads the team in scoring (13.6) and rebounding (8.1) with Tillie second in scoring (13.2) and rebounding (6.0) while also shooting a team best 48.8 percent from 3-point range. Three other Zags are averaging in double figures: Junior guard Josh Perkins (12.4), who also leads the team in assists (5.3); guard Zach Norvell Jr. (12.0), who was named the WCC Freshman of the Year; and physical 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Rui Hachimura (11.5), who scored 17 points Monday.

TIP-INS

1. Tillie has made 11 consecutive 3-point attempts dating back to the regular season finale at BYU - a 79-65 victory Feb. 24.

2. Few is 55-15 in WCC Tournament games and has won 16 titles.

3. Bryant and Childs have each scored 20 points or more in a game 13 times this season and have done it in the same game six times.

PREDICTION: Gonzaga 90, BYU 79
