Lenny Del Genio

Massachusetts +1

Do we have to mention again how little regard we have for Seton Hall? We opened the year by going against the Pirates in a 62-56 loss at Temple that was never really that close. We continued the trend last time out, taking Arkansas in the Big East/SEC challenge and the Hogs rewarded us by winning outright. Apparantly, many of you joined us in betting that game as the Razorbacks were bet down from +4 to +1.5. Not sure why in the world the 7-2 Minutemen opened as such as small favorite here against the 3-4 Pirates, who are just 11-22 ATS L2 years. Even better is the fact that some shops now have Seton Hall favored. Again, why? It almost certainly has something to do with the fact that UMass is off an embarrassing loss to Maine last time out. However, Seton Hall leading scorer Hazell is still out for 1st year HC Willard and that hurt in yet another sub-40% shooting performance against Arkansas. We can write off UMass' loss to Maine due to an aberration of shooting a horrible 29% from the floor. For the season, they are shooting 44%. Meanwhile, Seton Hall is shooting just 39% and three games ago lost to a Clemson team that shot only 29% from the floor against them. UMass has covered every lined game this year and has revenge for an 18-point road loss last season. Take Massachusetts.

6* Toledo +13.5

For a number of different reasons I believe the value in this contest is on the home side:

The Crusaders are 3-4 ATS to start the year; on the 7th they were hammered 76-58 by Purdue as 7-point underdogs.

The achilles heel of this team has always been its play on the road; it's just 7-18 SU its last 25 away from friendly confines over the last 2-seasons.

It's also just 1-2 ATS when playing the roll of favorite this year and over the last 2-seasons its a money burning 8-8 in the same position.

Finally, it's already just 2-4 ATS in non-conference games and just 11-13 ATS over the last 2-years in the same position.

On the other side of the court: The Rockets are 0-9 SU, but are 5-3-1 ATS overall; on the 8th they lost 78-65 at IUPU - Ft. Wayne, covering as 14 1/2-point dogs.

The strength of this team has been its play at Savage Arena where it's already 2-1 ATS this year; over the last 2-seasons it's 15-13 ATS in the same position.

It's also 4-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record; over the last 2-years it's 18-17 ATS in the same position.

Bottom line: Reese Holliday and Jay Shunnar had 17 points a piece the Rockets which remained winless despite shooting 47% from the field and hitting 4 of 9 3-point attempts and 19 of 23 free throws.

The big issue the Rockets had was "turnovers"; 19 turnovers compared to just nine for IPFW.

The Crusaders and Brandon Wood had a big first half against Purdue, but were completely shut down in the second; I expect just enough of a letdown here for the Rockets to sneak in the backdoor.

6* play on TOLEDO!
