5* Milwaukee -145

The Pirates have struggled on the road and lost the last 18 in a row at Milwaukee (Tuesday pending). The Pirate pitcher (Maholm) has experience but the Brewers are hitting the ball so well it will be hard to stay within 2 runs of them. Play Milwaukee at home on Wednesday afternoon.

20 Dime: DENVER NUGGETS

Last night, we saw two teams return home with their backs against the wall – Dallas down 3-1 to San Antonio; the Lakers tied up with the upstart Thunder. What happened? The Mavs cruised by 22 points, and the Lakers rolled by 24.

Tonight, the Nuggets find themselves back home in the same must-win situation against Utah. And like the Lakers and Mavericks last night, Denver is primed for a big-time blowout. There’s just no way a team led by veterans like Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin are going to go down without a fight – not on their home court.

Besides that, while I’m sure the Jazz want to win – badly – there’s something that happens to teams when they go on the road with a chance to close out a series. They just can’t match the home team’s intensity or summon up the kind of killer instinct needed to wrap things up. We saw it happen with the Celtics in Game 4 in Miami, and we saw it happen with the Spurs in Game 5 in Dallas last night. And you could also argue that the Cavaliers (Game 3 in Chicago), Hawks (Games 2 and 4 in Milwaukee) and Suns (Game 4 in Portland) suffered similar letdowns.

It will take a Herculean effort by the Jazz to reverse that trend and match Denver’s physical and emotional energy tonight – and I’m not even talking about Utah’s chances of actually winning this game. I’m saying it will be nearly impossible for Utah to avoid getting blown out.

Keep this in mind, too: The Nuggets, who have dropped three in a row since a 126-113 win over Utah in Game 1, have not lost four straight games all season long. In fact, this is just the third time Denver has had a three-game slide all season (and the first time it happened, the Nuggets snapped out of their funk with a 105-95 victory against – you guessed it! – the Jazz in Utah). Also, prior to losing the last three games, Denver had beaten Utah five out of six times and gone 8-0-2 ATS in the previous 10 clashes.

And the last time Utah beat Denver as many as four straight times was when it had a 6-0 SU and ATS run in the rivalry from the 2005-06 to 2006-07 seasons.

Bottom line: I’m not suggesting the Nuggets will rally all the way back and win this series, but they will win this Game 5 tonight and they’ll win it convincingly. After all, Denver is on ATS runs of 40-17-2 as a home favorite of five to 10½ points and 8-2 ATS when laying that spread margin in the playoffs, while the Jazz are in ATS ruts of 1-5 as an underdog, 4-16-1 as a ‘dog of five to 10½ points and 2-7 in playoff games as a ‘dog in that range.

Athletics at Rays
Pick: A's +150

I like the Oakland A's in this game vs the TB Rays...that's not easy for me to say and its never easy betting against your team and the team with the best overall record in baseball...I like the pitching matchup and I think D.Braden will keep the Rays hitters off balance all night...the Rays have really struggled vs lefties except for one game when they bashed M.Buehlre...the A's are 4-0 in Braden's four starts and has only given up 18 hits in 26 IP...I like Oakland

4* UTAH JAZZ @ DENVER NUGGETS OVER 215.5

Despite the way you spell it... there's no "D" in Denver! That's for sure. Denver did not play much defense down the stretch of the regular season, relying on forcing turnovers as opposed to forcing bad shots. Against Utah, the Nuggets defensive weaknesses have been exploited in each of the first four games of this series.... in which an average of 221.5 combined points have been scored. Utah shot 54 percent from inside the arc in the first three games of this series. They followed that up with a 61 percent shooting performance from two point range in their Game 4 blowout over the Nuggets. And Denver has been sending the Jazz to the free throw line, unable to avoid fouls. Utah has shot a whopping 152 free throw attempts – 38 per game – while taking a 3-1 series lead. Denver’s reliance on creating turnovers defensively has failed miserably in this series. With Jazz All-Star guard Deron Williams controlling the flow of the offense, the Jazz had 51 assists and only 22 turnovers in the last two games.

Wanna talk a 'HIGH'-scoring series? You got it! These two teams have gone 18-7-2 O/U in the last 27 games versus each other since the 2005 season. But we can do even BETTER. In the games played IN the 'Mile High City' (Denver), the results have been 10-1-1 O/U.... and a PERFECT 6-0 O/U when the OU line is 210 > points!

Let's break out the OU SYSTEMS and see what shakes out. The Nuggets have their back to the walls as they have lost EACH of the last 3 games of this series.
4-0 O/U: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE teams playing off 3 SU losses in a row (DENVER)... when the OU line is 193 > points.

Tonight's OU line is on the high side (opened at 215 points). It's certainly justified based on the results of the first four games. Get your play in ASAP as the line figures to go UP on gameday.
9-1 O/U: All NBA Playoff '1/5' games (Round ONE / Game FIVE)... when the OU line is > 205 points.

Let's take a look at the OU pattern of the series thus far. Games One and Two (IN Denver) went OVER the Total... Game Three went UNDER... and Game Four went OVER...
4-0 O/U last 5 years: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE home teams playing off an OVER... and UNDER... and back-to-back OVERS (DENVER).

There's a "same-division" aspect to this game that we also researched. When the OU line is high in these division games, look for an OVER to be the result.
12-2 O/U since 1990: All NBA Playoff home teams (DENVER) vs a DIVISION opponent (JAZZ)... when the OU Line is > 210 points. This applies to all Games 4, 5, 6, or 7 only. And in the last 15 years, these games have gone a PERFECT 6-0 O/U.

No query would be complete without a look at this particular Day of the Week...
8-1 O/U since 06: All NBA Playoff games on a WEDNESDAY when the OU Line is 210 > points...
6-1 O/U last 3 years: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE home teams on a WEDNESDAY playing off a SU loss (DENVER).

The score in Sunday's Game Four was Utah 117 / Denver 106....
6-1 O/U since 05: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE road teams playing off a SU win in which they scored 115 > points (UTAH).
7-0 O/U since 06: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE teams playing off a SU loss in which they scored 105 > points (DENVER).

A final look at the SEEDS in this game seals the deal for us...
7-1 O/U: All NBA Playoff GAME FIVE teams that are a #4 SEED when the OU line is 193 > points (DENVER). In the OU line range of 193 to 217 points, the results have gone a PERFECT 6-0 O/U.
