SPORTS WAGERS

USA +195 over RUSSIA

Three-way betting. Two of the tournaments powers hook up for their second games of the tournament and at this price the Americans are a must play. USA’s slaughtering of the Slovakians was impressive but it’s not a true measure of what this team is capable of. Still, it’s impossible to ignore the list of impressive snipers that the Americans possess and that was on full display against the Slovaks. The United States showed Thursday what four solid lines with a healthy mix of talent, tenacity and chemistry can do and of the four powers in this event, no team looked sharper than the Americans. One could even argue that the Americans fourth line of Paul Stastny, Max Pacioretty, and T.J. Oshie was their best line but in reality, there isn’t a “best line” because all four are capable of going off.

Of course the same could be said for the Russians four lines but Russia was not nearly as impressive as the Americans. It looked the Russians were going to blow away the Slovenians after Alex Ovechkin scored with just over a minute into the game. The Russians built a quick 3-0 lead but were ahead by just one goal entering the third. Whether they took their gas off the pedal or not, it’s inability to bury a weak Slovenia squad should not be overlooked. The Russians showed some notable deficiencies on their blueline and we can assure you that’s an area the Americans will attempt to exploit. Russia remains a dangerous club with a lot of speed and puck skill and they can ice the world's best PP unit. However, they have far from a perfect roster and will likely need a bit more help from their goaltenders than Sweden, USA or Canada. One game proves nothing but in a game in which the Americans have at least a 50% chance of winning, they offer up all the value in this one. We could play the Americans at +125 but choose to play them in regulation only at this more appealing price.

Saint Louis over VCU

ESPN may have cancelled BracketBuster Saturday, however with these two A-10 teams clashing as league opponents for the time being, this sort of remains a version of the old mid-major classic. VCU is the more well-known commodity thanks to their Final Four run a couple of years ago and NCAA Tournament resume. But this season the team to perhaps be worried about is Saint Louis. They pose a threat on both sides of the court, and at home they are extremely tough to beat. I think VCU has a good team this year, but I think Saint Louis has a great team. The home team offers a bit more well-rounded play, and we go with them in a key conference matchup.

South Carolina over Alabama

I'm a huge fan of Alabama, but that does not mean I am not aware of this team's weaknesses. Alabama comes off a great win over Ole Miss at home as Trevor Relaford hits a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in what was a big win for this squad at home. However, that win was to avoid losing 5 straight for the first time in the Anthony Grant tenure at Alabama. This year has been a struggle for the Tide, and even with that win Alabama is still 4 games under .500 at 10-14. Now, it's hard to be that tough on Bama considering they had a couple off season transfers before the season started, and this team still has the second most difficult Strength of Schedule in America. When Anthony Grant scheduled these games, it was with the thought that he would have his star players not transfer as they have. The lack of star power and upperclassman has affected this team on the road as they are 0-7 SU on the road. As Bama comes off a win big win at home, look for them to have a let down here against South Carolina, who lost by just 1 point to Ole Miss at home earlier this year. South Carolina is 1-9 in conference play entering Thursday, and they will be desperately fired up facing Alabama at home. Though Alabama will be better next year, this is a tough spot for them to face South Carolina as they still seek their first road win. South Carolina is still a team that is a Top 125 team on the offensive end, and as Bama struggles scoring, they face a Top 20 team in offensive rebounding and an Alabama team that is outside the Top 250 in 3-point shooting whereas South Carolina is a Top 75 3-point shooting team, and they are even better at home to boot. Look for Alabama to have a letdown and Frank Martin's team to get a much-needed win at home on Saturday afternoon.

Jim Feist

San Francisco vs. Santa Clara
Play: San Francisco -1

The road team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these West Coast Conference rivals. San Fran is playing well, on a 4-2 SU/ATS run and this ends a tough 3-game road trip. This team has been a cover-machine, 52-22 ATS in West Coast Conference play, 38-16-2 ATS on the road. San Fran (15-10) is on a 9-5 SU run winning at San Diego as a +2.5 dog (74-67), and a close loss at BYU (68-63). San Fran is uptempo, 54th in nation in scoring (77 ppg, 22nd in shooting (.481%) with a dominant 1-2 punch in 6-7 senior Cole Dickerson (14.8 ppg, 7 rpg), 6-7 junior Kruize Pinkins (12.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg). The Dons are 53-22 ATS in their last 75 vs. West Coast and 38-16-2 ATS in their last 56 road games. Meanwhile Santa Clara is 4-9 battling San Diego, Pacfic and Loyola-Marymount for last place. It's a small, guard-oriented team with two guys who do all the scoring. They are the worst defensive team in the WCC allowing over 47% shooting. Santa Clara (11-15) is on a 1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS run, last in the WCC in shooting (.418%), just 35% from three-point land, which ranks 8th of 10 teams. The Broncos are 10-27 ATS in their last 37 home games, plus 15-36 ATS in their last 51 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. When these teams met January 25, San Francisco won 75-66 at home as -7 chalk, but it wasn't really that close, leading 34-22 at the half. Santa Clara shot 39%, San Francisco shot 49%. The Dons are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings, plus 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings in Santa Clara.

Ben Burns

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
Play: Oklahoma State -2

The Cowboys didn't fare too well without Marcus Smart last time out. They got hammered at Texas by a score of 87-68.

Off that blowout loss and given that they got beaten soundly at Oklahoma when they had Smart, a lot of people aren't likely to give the Cowboys much off a shot here. Not with Smart out again.

I believe that the Cowboys have opened as the (small) favorites for good reason though. The fact that they've failed to cover six straight games has worked in our favor, as the line could easily be a little higher.

While the Sooners have been mediocre on the road, the Cowboys have been tough to beat here. They're 10-2 when listed as the home team, 6-2 ATS (5-3 SU) in home lined games. They outscore teams by a commanding 89.2 to 64.9 average margin on this floor.

The Cowboys were favored by nine points when they hosted the Sooners last season, almost exactly one year ago to the day. Playing with revenge from an earlier loss at Oklahoma, they won that game by five points. They aren't laying nearly as many points this season and I believe the small line is providing value. Consider Oklahoma State.

Scott Spreitzer

VCU vs. St. Louis
Play:St. Louis -4½

The Billikens have quietly reeled off 16 straight wins since a December 1st loss to Wichita State. In fact, Jim Crews' troops are 22-2 SU with their only two losses coming by five to the still undefeated Shockers and by a 63-57 final to Wisconsin on a neutral floor. SLU is a tough matchup because of their discipline and stingy style of defensive play and the fact that they can rely on any one of five players for scoring with all five averaging between 8.8 & 14.5 ppg. They also have a handful of ball-handlers, making it tough to turn this team over. SLU enters averaging just 12 tpg at home. The style of play employed by Crews and carried out by his talented troops makes it tough on "Shaka ball." The Rams rely on producing turnovers, but it's not likely to happen here. SLU has won and covered the last two meetings and I expect a third straight as they're still not receiving their "just due" at the betting window. The Rams have covered just 6 of their last 20 road games, while the Billikens are on a 14-6 ATS run at home. I'm recommending a play on Saint Louis, minus the points, on Saturday.

Jimmy Boyd

UCLA -9½

The Bruins are a much better team than they get credit for. When you look at their five losses this season they were either on the road or against a top 10 ranked opponent. UCLA did suffer a five point loss against Utah the first time these teams met this season, but I like their chances to get some revenge on their home court where they have a 14-1 record. The Bruins have the 11th ranked offense in the country, averaging an impressive 83.3 points per game. When playing at home their scoring average increases to 87.1 points per game.

The Utes have really struggled on the road this year. They are 1-6 straight up in road games, and a big reason for their poor performance is the huge decline in offensive production. Utah has averaged a respectable 79.2 points per game overall this season, but when playing on the road that number dips all the way down to 65 points per game. Utah has also benefited from playing some very soft defenses. Their opponents have surrendered an average of 74.3 points per game this season.

Colorado State vs. Fresno State
Play: Fresno State -3½

The Colorado State Rams beat Fresno State handily at home earlier this year. I think Fresno State gets some revenge here. Colorado State has been struggling of late. They lost at home to Utah State last game. They also were beaten by 9 at Nevada recently. Fresno State is turning the corner of late. Fresno State has won four straight coming into this one including a nice home win over Wyoming. The Bulldogs have the momentum and I like them at this number. Take Fresno State.

Air Force vs. San Diego State
Play: Air Force +17½

San Diego State is a very good team that will be at home but the Aztecs seem to win games by small margins. They are off a 6 point loss so they may blow out Air Force but the Falcons only lost at home by 7 to SDSU. Air Force scorers:

Coggins 16.8 ppg
Yon 13
Oleinski 12.6
Willaims 10.6
Hammonds 8.5

Air Force seems to keep games close so hopefully we see a game in the 74-61 range.

Xavier vs. Marquette
Play: Xavier +3½

The Musketeers dominated the glass 39-20, in a win vs Marquette last month and have some solid edges here in this game. Xavier has covered 22 of 32 as a dog and has won 8 straight the past few seasons after a game where they allowed 60 or less points. They have covered 5 of 6 off a conference win and are 5-1 this season in games vs teams ranked from 50 to 100 in the RPI Scale. Marquette is just 1-8 this season vs top 50 teams like Xavier, so we cant lay points with a team that struggles vs good teams. The Golden Eagles are 2-8 to the spread on Saturdays and have failed to cover 11 of the last 16 vs winning teams. In conference games they have been money burners of late failing to cover in 7 of 10. We will back Xavier.

Justin Bay

South Dakota State vs. Western Illinois
Play: Western Illinois +4

South Dakota State
- Average 70.8 PPG on the road
- Allow 74.8 PPG on the road

Western Illinois
- Average 69.3 PPG @ home
- Allow 56.7 PPG @ home

**According to our system, Western Illinois should win this game straight up.**

The Citadel vs. Furman
Play: Furman -6

Citadel
- Average 62.3 PPG
- Allow 76 PPG
- SOS: 95.3

Furman
- Average 63.9 PPG
- Allow 74.4 PPG
- SOS: 95.6

**Furman beat The Citadel 76-71 on the road a couple weeks back and I think should be able to considerably better playing at home where they average 72 PPG.

Nick Parsons

San Francisco vs. Santa Clara
Play: Santa Clara +1

This is a “revenge” game for the Broncos who fell 75-66 to the Dons as 7-point underdogs back on January 25th.

Santa Clara came into that matchup with San Francisco on a three-game losing streak, both straight up and against the spread; after the setback to the Dons, the Broncos would go on to lose three more straight-up, but go 2-1 ATS in the process. And then last time out Santa Clara beat San Diego 69-63 outright as a 5-point dog

With the home floor advantage and with a bit of momentum on their side, I expect the Broncos to come out fired up tonight as they look to avenge that earlier loss to the Dons.

Since the victory over Santa Clara, San Francisco has traded “SU” wins with losses, most recently losing 68-63 at BYU, coming away with a comfortable cover as an 11.5 point dog. But with a game in Saint Mary’s on the horizon, a team that they lost 88-73 to at home in January, this unquestionably sets up as a classic “look ahead/letdown spot” for the Dons tonight.

Note that San Francisco is just 5-6 ATS this year when playing the role of underdog this year.

And note that Santa Clara is 8-7 ATS vs. teams with winning records and 3-1 ATS this season in revenging a road loss vs. an opponent.

The situation, the numbers and the trends all point to Santa Clara as the sharp move here.

Virginia has won eight in a row since suffering its lone ACC loss (to Duke) on January 13th. It's been a pretty remarkable turnaround for a team that scored only 38 points on its home floor to Wisconsin early in the year and was also thrashed by 35 at Tennessee. But Saturday afternoon sees them playing at a venue where they've lost four straight times, by an average of 17 points per game. Also, I think Clemson will be able to match the Cavaliers defensively. This will enable the underdog to cover the spread in what I figure will be a pretty low scoring game.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
Clemson is allowing just 48 points per game at home this season, the major reason why they are 11-1 SU at Littlejohn Coliseum. These are in fact the top two teams in the nation in terms of points allowed per game, seperated by just 0.2 PPG. Teams are shooting less than 20 percent from three-point range at Clemson this year. Don't forget that the Tigers beat Duke earlier in the year on this floor, 72-59 as 5.5-point dogs.

West Virginia vs. Texas
Pick: West Virginia
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
The Texas Longhorns didn't miss their leading scorer when they cruised past Oklahoma State on Tuesday, but they might have a tougher time tonight against a red hot West Virginia team.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
The Mountaineers shot better than 59% from the field in a 102-77 rout of Iowa State Monday. West Virginia has won four of it's last five, and those wins have come against quality opponents in Baylor, K-State, Oklahoma and Iowa State.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
The Longhorns won on the road at West Virginia earlier this season, but the Mountaineers won their last visit to Texas 57-53 in overtime, and swept the season series with a home win by a score of 60-58.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVlCE PLAYS VlSlT THESPREAD.COM
Texas could have it's hands full with a team that comes in full of confidence after hitting 13-of-22 from beyond the arc in the win over Iowa State. If the Mountaineers can stay hot from the perimeter, they could easily pull off an upset here in the Lone Star State.
