Ben Burns

Bruins @ Senators
PICK: Under 5.5

I had a big play (10* "Blue Chip") on the Bruins to finish "under" the total in yesterday's game at Buffalo. (That was one of Burns' TWO easy NHL O/U winners on Friday.) I feel this one has another strong shot at being low-scoring.

While the Bruins played last night, the Senators were off the past couple of days. That's noteworthy as we find the "under" at 9-3 when the Sens played with two day's rest between games.

On a 4-game winning streak, with the last three of those finishing above the total, note that the Sens have seen the "under" go 3-1 after three or more consecutive "overs" and 7-3 after having won their previous three games. Consider the UNDER 5.5.

Matt Fargo

UTEP @ Central Florida
PICK: Central Florida

This has turned into a very big game for Central Florida. The Knights are coming off a horrendous loss at Rice on Wednesday which may have burst their bubble for the NCAA Tournament as it was a loss it could ill afford. The Knights need to regroup quickly and they should be able to take care of that at home. Their goal now is to salvage fourth place in the standings which would assure a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament. If they win out, it is theirs but a loss here makes it next to impossible.

UTEP meanwhile is coming off a monster win at home against the then-first place Golden Eagles in double overtime. The Miners shot 50 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe but don't expect them to come close to duplicating that here. They are also in the hunt for that fourth spot in the standings as they are a game behind the Knights. The problem is that UTEP is just 1-8 on the road this season with the lone victory coming at Memphis in its last game on the highway.

The Knights have lost at home only once this season and that was against Southern Mississippi seven games back. It will be nearly impossible for Central Florida to crash the NCAA Tournament without a big run in the conference tournament, and even most likely needing to win it, so that is what makes that fourth seed so important as it is one less game to win to get closer to the title. The Miners are just 1-6 in their last seven games following a win against the spread.

Saint Marys vs San Francisco
Pick: Over

St. Mary’s is heading to San Francisco Saturday in a battle of strong offensive teams. San Fran is on an 11-1 ATS run, but also 20-8 run over the total. You’ve got the No. 2 and 3 teams in scoring in the West Coast Conference meeting, plus St. Mary’s is No. 1 in the WCC in field goal shooting (47.3%). Look for an offensive show, Play St Mary’s/San Fran over the total.

LSU over Mississippi

Ole Miss started the season with great promise, opening 9-1. Wins over Miami, DePaul, and Penn State haven't proven to be worth a lot and while overall it was a high quality non-conference schedule the Rebels have not held up in SEC play. Mississippi enters this game having lost five of the last six games and it is hard to envision the Rebels redeeming an ugly 81-55 loss at LSU early in the conference season. LSU didn't shoot particularly well in that game but they suffocated Ole Miss into just 35 percent shooting and 17 turnovers to run away with the win, leading by 20 at the half. The Tigers are not a team that is getting any attention but at 17-10 with a decent resume building this could be a NCAA tournament team with a strong finish. LSU has played with urgency in recent weeks with four straight wins and while this team lost a couple of ugly games in November the overall numbers are shaping up with a decent strength of schedule, a marquee win over a strong Marquette team and sitting in fourth place in the SEC with a chance to move up into third if they win out. While Mississippi owns strong defensive numbers for the season, the intensity has not been there in recent games, allowing over 75 points per game and 48 percent shooting over the last five contests. The Rebels are 11-2 at home this season but LSU is 8-3 ATS in the last eleven road games and the Tigers have six road or neutral wins this season. Mississippi has failed to cover in each of the last three home games and there is much more at stake for the road team in this match-up.

EZWINNERS

New Mexico Lobos -8

The Lobos are coming off of a disapointing loss at Colorado State. New Mexico shot 37% from the field and was only 6 of 23 from three point range against the Rams and also turned the ball over seventeen times. I like the Lobos to bounce back and play the way they were playing before the trip to Colorado State. New Mexico shot 48% while winning seven straight games by an averago of 21 points per game prior to the loss. This has been a great match up for the Lobos as they will be going for their ninth straight win over TCU and I expect their success to continue. New Mexico is 8-2 against the spread in their last ten road games and TCU is only 2-10 against the spread in their last tweleve home games against a team with a winning road record. Lay the points.

Providence at DePaul
Prediction: DePaul

Oliver Purnell is beginning to make a difference with the DePaul program. This year's squad has experience and they are playing competitive basketball despite losing 7 straight since beating Rutgers on January 25. Only 1 of the 7 losses was non-competitive and the Blue Demons held second half leads against St. John's (both games), Cincinnati, Marquette, Notre Dame, and Louisville. That's 6 times in 7 games that DePaul was in the contest well into the second half. Purnell says he expects to have Moses Morgan back (concussion) for this game. But if Morgan sits out again, Purnell still has 8 other players drawing a lot of playing time. Providence heads to Chicago having lost 5 straight and 13 of their last 15 overall. So, we have 2 teams that have put a lot of games in the "L" column, but only 1 of the teams is actually feeling pretty decent about themselves right now, and that's the home team. I won with DePaul plus the points over Notre Dame on these pages 2 weeks ago. Today, I'm laying the short number with DePaul. T

North Carolina vs. Virginia
Play: North Carolina -3.5

This game will be televised on Espn. The Tar Heels are the choice to get the win and cover and have some nice number here in this one. Carolina has won 24 of 25 vs teams who average less than 65 per game and are 11- this season with 10 spread wins vs teams over .500. In games after scoring 80 or more they have come back to win 15 of 17. As a road favorite from -3 or less they are 4-0 and 3-1 to the spread and 5-0 straight up and ats when the total is 120 to 129.5. Virginia is a good team this season. However they are in a tough spot here vs North Carolina. The Cavaliers are just 4-14 vs teams who can score and average 77 or more per game and have lost 13 of 19 with road loss revenge. Look for North Carolina to emerge with a win and cover in this one.

Joseph D'Amico

Nebraska vs. Michigan State
Play: Michigan State -17½

MSU is by far one of the best rebounding and defensive squads in the nation. They have rattled off 6 wins in a row SU, going 5-1 ATS. Draymond Green is a Big 10 Player of the Year candidate. The Forward averages 15.5 PPG, 10.2 RPG, and boasts a .706 % from the line. Appling, Dawson, Wood, and Nix make for an incredible supporting cast. The Spartans average margin of victory at home this season is 23.1 points. Without Jorge Brian Diaz (out with a foot injury), the Nebraska is very vulnerable in this matchup. Their front line is inferior to Tom Izzo's big men. The Husker's have dropped 5 of their L6, going 1-5 against the number. In the first meeting back in December, Nebraska played host and fell to Michigan State, 68-55. Now they must play on the road, where MSU is a perfect 16-0 as a host. The Spartans are 7-0 ATS their L7 games played at home and 5-1 ATS their L6 games vs. the Big 10. The Cornhuskers are 1-4 ATS their L5 games played as a 'dog and 1-5 ATS their L6 games played against the Big 10. Take Michigan State.

Missouri vs. Kansas
Play: Missouri +8

No 3 Missouri has already upset the Jayhawks in their first meeting at home 74-71 as a 3-point favorite. The push raised their point spread record in the last eight meetings to 0-6-2...that's right the Tigers have failed to 'cover' in any of the last eight meetings. After winning seven straight Missouri was up ended by Kansas State their last time out and might have been caught looking ahead to this match-up while the Jayhawks have won five straight since their defeat to the Tigers. In a surprise the Tigers get it done here.

Drexel vs. Old Dominion
Play: Old Dominion -2

In their first meeting this season down in Philadelphia, ODU built a solid 32-25 advantage only to fall short at the end to talented Drexel 62-57. Again it was the tenacious Dragons defense that won the event holding the Monarchs to just 25 points in the second-half. Drexel had a huge Bracket-Busters win over Cleveland State last Saturday, followed by a massacre of James Madison 78-61 at home. Granted Drexel is 12-3 ATS in conference, but ODU has covered the last 5 of 6 ATS, while going 4-1 ATS in the Colonial. Overall, feel this is a huge letdown spot for Drexel, being on the road in a difficult venue. Remember the tourney starts shortly and Drexel has a 15-2 mark and the #1 seed with VCU following up.

Accuscore

Notre Dame -5.5 at St. John’s

The Fighting Irish are on a roll having won nine games in a row including three ranked teams during that span. They are winning in simulations by 8 points on average. They also play at a very slow tempo and don’t turn the ball over which matches up well against a St. John’s team that relies so much on playing a frenetic game to take advantage of its athleticism.

Iowa State +7.5 at Kansas State

The Wildcats are coming off gigantic wins over Baylor and Missouri, and they also played Kansas before that. This game against a solid Iowa State squad looks like a complete trap game to me having had a few days to bask in the accolades after having beaten two top 10 teams. The Cyclones are a very good shooting squad, and are only +3 according to simulations.

Loyola-Chicago vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee Over 115 Points

The AccuScore sim line is 119 points. The record for totals in Milwaukee games is positive at 13-11, and 15-9 in Chicago game.

Old Dominion vs. Drexel Over 116.5 Points

The AccuScore sim line is 121 points with the over occurring in 57.3 percent of simulations. Totals in Colonial conference games have been solid at 56.4 percent. AccuScore has gone 18-8 (69.2%) picking totals for Drexel and 14-9 (60.9%) for Old Dominion.

Scott Rickenbach

Colorado State at San Diego State
Play: Colorado State

While the major conferences get all the love at this time of the year, perhaps the best battle in all of college hoops is happening in the Mountain West Conference. The MWC boasts at least three NCAA Tournament teams – San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico – but there is room for one more. The Colorado State Rams are promptly sitting on the tournament bubble heading into the weekend and can boost its NCAA resume with a win over the Aztecs Saturday night. Books are being very generous with the points, handing the hungry Rams eight points on the road. Colorado State has won back-to-back outings after a short skid, most recently upsetting the Lobos 71-63 as a 5.5-point home underdog Tuesday. The Rams have flexed their defensive muscle in those past two outings, forcing 17 turnovers in the win against New Mexico while holding the Lobos to just 36 percent shooting. The game before that, CSU locked down Wyoming for only 18 points in the second half. Keeping teams off the scoreboard is just a part of the Rams’ recent success. They’ve been lights out at the foul line – which is music to the bettors’ ear. Every point counts when you’re up against the spread, and the Rams haven’t let those go to waste. They were 20 of 23 from the foul line versus New Mexico and sunk 14 of 16 from the stripe versus the Cowboys. The Aztecs are stumbling toward the finish line in the MWC. They’re 1-2 SU in their last three with the win coming in overtime against Wyoming. They’ve covered the spread just twice in the last seven outings and already got trounced by the Rams earlier this season, losing 77-60 on the road on Jan. 28. San Diego State was limited to just 31 percent shooting, including going 3 for 21 from beyond the arc, in that loss. The Rams, on the other hand, shot 49 percent from the field and were a perfect 23 for 23 from the free-throw line. That helped Colorado State improve to 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings with SDSU.

1 Unit TCU +7½

TCU, which has won 7 straight at home, is quietly playing some very good basketball. The Horned Frogs are 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games with 2 of those wins coming against Colorado State and UNLV, and they would love to add first place New Mexico to their list of victims. TCU is 2 games out of first with 3 to play so it knows it has to have this one to have a chance at stealing the league. New Mexico just lost at Colorado State and could fall again tonight if it's not careful. The Horned Frogs are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 vs. the Mountain West, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog. We'll take the points.
