Creighton - over Northern Iowa

Northern Iowa has gone from being a fringe at-large NCAA tournament bid candidate after eight straight wins to enter February to being a dumpster fire with five losses in the last six games, the last three coming at home. Last year's NCAA tournament Cinderella will not be dancing this year barring a miracle run in the Missouri Valley tournament next week and it is hard to envision a strong effort for this final game of the regular season, on the road at Creighton. The Blue Jays have not been a very good team this season at 17-13 but they are very strong at home with only three home losses all year, falling to BYU and the top two teams in the Valley standings. Most home wins have come in convincing fashion as well with six conference wins coming by at least six points and five of six coming by a double-digit margin. In this home finale Creighton has a chance to lock up a winning conference season while matching Northern Iowa for the fourth place spot in the league, though Creighton will lose the tiebreaker which this year is non-conference strength of schedule. It won't matter as these teams will meet in that 4/5 seed game regardless as Indiana State will own the tiebreaker over Northern Iowa and Creighton will own the tiebreaker over Evansville in those potential scenarios. Knowing that these teams will meet again should give a big edge to the home team with a supportive home crowd on senior night and with a revenge motivation after Northern Iowa won narrowly earlier in the season.

Scott Spreitzer

Brigham Young @ San Diego State
PICK: San Diego State -3.5

SDSU is about to embark on the biggest home game in Aztec history. The Viejas Center will be jumping as Jimmer Fredette and the "hated" BYU Cougars roll into town. The winner of this game could very well grab one of the four top seeds in the Big Dance. That's exactly what's on the line. There's a lot of NBA talent on the floor in this matchup and SDSU owns the majority of it. No doubt Jimmer is tough to handle when the Cougars have the ball. But Fredette hasn't been quite as sharp lately, facing double and even triple teams throughout the season. He only made 9 of 26 shots in BYU's most recent contest, a win over Colorado State. SDSU normally plays Fredette straight up, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more double-teaming in this one. BYU has nice role players, but no one can really step-up if Fredette is held in check. The best player on the floor wears an Aztec uniform. Kawhi Leonard, a sophomore, will likely enter the NBA draft following this season. At 6'7, he's not a long range shooter, but owns a fantastic mid-range game. Leonard is also a nice ball-handler off of high screen picks, and will create open cuts to the basket for others. Leonard was unstoppable in the first meeting, a 71-58 BYU win in Provo. But the final score was not indicative of the actual game. SDSU led by a point at the half, and the game was nip-and-tuck for more than 30 minutes of action. BYU pulled away in the final minutes of the contest. Aztec guard D.J. Gay (12.1 ppg) went 0-7 in that contest. I expect a much improved game this time around, helping his team to the win and cover. SDSU is 25-13 ATS at home as a PK or a favorite. I expect another home win and cover in this one. I'm laying the points with San Diego State.

Marc Lawrence

South Carolina @ Georgia
Pick: South Carolina +10.5

The Gamecocks delivered for us with their upset of Ole Miss last Tuesday so we’ll keep riding the ‘Cocks (figuratively, of course) as they amble into Athens. These adversaries squared off two weeks ago in Columbia and the Bulldogs barely escaped with a 4-point win. That bitter defeat highlights South Carolina’s strong pointspread performance in the role of avenger as Sir Big Spur has covered seven of its previous 11 tries while going 4-1 as a dog of more than 4 points. And when it comes to seeking revenge as double-digit underdogs, these ‘Cocks are a handful, posting a 19-6 ATS in their last 25 games. Georgia has made great strides under 2nd-year head coach Mark Fox (14-17 SU last season) but they’re firmly wedged into an SEC sandwich here, off a same-season revenger against Florida with a get-even game on tap against LSU (Dawgs just 7-13 SU and ATS before tangling with the Tigers). The clincher is from our database, which points out that the home team in Georgia games this season is definitely not the host with the most, going 4-15-1 ATS. Grab as many points as you can, then watch the fearless fowl bring home the bacon. We recommend a 1-unit play on South Carolina.

Celtics at Clippers
Pick: Under

Boston is still a strong defensive team, even without Kendrick Perkins, as they showed the last game in Denver, allowing 89 points and 45.3% shooting to uptempo Denver despite being shorthanded. Now they have a far fuller compliment of players following Thursday's big trade day. The Clippers are improved defensively than in recent years, on a recent 7-2 run under the total. The Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles between these teams and the Under is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings overall. Play the Celtics/Clippers Under the total.

BYU at San Diego State
Play: Under 141

The last 3 meetings at San Diego have reached 140, 128 and 134 points. This year's earlier meeting ended 71-58 (129 points). SDSU has 11 unders and 4 overs in their last 15 overall games. BYU's last three road games have totaled 135, 142 and 131 as they have allowed 62, 52 and 56 in those road games. They have played plenty of zone lately and the Aztecs will be happy for a low scoring game. The game is on TV at 2pm eastern but an early 11am start in San Diego. How will the early start effect the teams? Jimmer Fredette could get hot and there could be lots of late 3's and free throws but I think we see an under on Saturday. The first game's total was set at 145.5 and easily went under and we could see a higher scoring game since the teams will be familiar with each other. SDSU is known for defense and not very good at shooting from the outside.

Chuck O'Brien

Missouri at KANSAS STATE (-3)

For Saturday’s first of two complimentary college basketball selections, take Kansas State as a home favorite over visiting Missouri.

The host Wildcats are peaking at the right time, having won three in a row and five of six (including Wednesday’s 61-57 upset win at Nebraska, which cashed a 15 Dime play for yours truly!). And if not for a game-winning shot at Colorado that came a split-second after the buzzer, Kansas State would be riding a six game winning streak.

Also, since suffering a shocking eight-point loss to Colorado (as a 10-point home chalk) on Jan. 12, the Wildcats have peeled off five straight convincing Big 12 victories (and spread-covers) on their home court. Those five home wins: 94-60 over Texas Tech, 69-61 over Baylor, 69-53 over Nebraska, 84-68 over top-ranked Kansas and 77-62 over Oklahoma last Saturday.

Yes, Missouri has been even a little bit better than Kansas State recently, winning four in a row and five of six. However, four of those five wins were at home, and the other was last Saturday’s six-point win at freefalling Iowa State (which has just one conference victory all season). Otherwise, the Tigers are 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS on the Big 12 highway, including blowout losses at Kansas (103-86), Texas (71-58) and Colorado (89-76).

Finally, this a huge payback game for Kansas State, which traveled to Columbia on Jan. 17 and got whacked 75-59 as a 4 ½-point road underdog. The good news for the Wildcats? The home team is on an 8-0 SU and ATS roll in this rivalry, and going back to 2005-06, the host is 13-1 SU and ATS. Missouri’s last win (or cover) in Manhattan: Feb. 28, 2004!

4♦ KANSAS STATE

Vanderbilt at LSU (+9')

For Saturday’s second of two complimentary college basketball selections, take LSU as a home underdog against visiting Vanderbilt.

The Tigers have been pretty frisky lately, following up Sunday’s close contest against Florida (68-61 loss as a 10½-point home underdog) with Wednesday’s shocking 84-82 upset at Mississippi State (as a nine-point road underdog). When you review LSU’s seven games this month, there’s only one ugly result – an 80-61 loss at Arkansas; otherwise, the Tigers have the win at Mississippi State, the seven-point loss to Florida, an eight-point loss to South Carolina, a one-point home loss to Mississippi State, a six-point loss at Ole Miss and an 11-point home loss to Alabama.

In fact, with one more basket against Alabama – and that was a single-digit contest until the final minute when the Tide padded their score at the free-throw line – LSU would be on a 4-1-1 ATS run right now.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt saw its five-game winning streak halted in Tuesday’s 60-51 home loss to Tennessee as a 5½-point favorite. That puts the Commodores at a less-than-inspiring 2-6-1 ATS as a favorite in SEC games this season. The loss also essentially ended Vandy’s chances of catching Florida for the SEC East title (and possible #1 seed in the conference tournament).

Additionally, the Commodores are in a huge flat spot today, coming off a loss to their instate rivals and with big measuring-stick games at Kentucky on Tuesday and at home vs. Florida on Saturday to close out the regular season. Don’t know about you, but I don’t trust teams in those kind of situations to go on the road and post blowout conference win.

Just like the last two meetings between these schools (75-67 and 77-69), LSU keeps this one close and gets inside the number, cashing for the third game in a row.

2♦ LSU

Colorado State vs. Air Force
Play: Colorado State -3.5

After suffering back to back S/U losses to UNLV and BYU, an underrated but talented Colorado St team must win today to maintain NCAA Tournament hopes. The good news is Colorado St wins the games they are supposed to win. Colorado St is 4-1 S/U & ATS in their last 5 Mountain West road games, while Air Force is 1-4 ATS & S/U in their last 5 Home games.

B.Y.U. vs. San Diego State
Play: San Diego State -3.5

The Cougars who have won six of the last seven meetings against the Aztecs. One of those wins came back in January in Provo when the Cougars rallied to get a 71 to 58 home win as a 5.5-point home favorite. BYU must now travel to Viejas Arena and face a primed San Diego State team ready to avenge that earlier defeat. Sources close to the Cougars program have suggested that BYU’s star Jimmer Fredette has started to show signs of fatigue. This kid has averaged NBA type numbers with more than 27 points per game, teams are using double and triple teams against him, this has to wear on him not only mentally but also physically. We saw some of this last Wednesday when missed seventeen of twenty-six shots from the field against Colorado State. BYU has not been a good underdog team going 24-43-2 ATS overall in this role. San Diego State plays stout defense at home holding opponents to just 55.6 points per game on 38.7 percent from the field. They also control the boards out rebounding their opponents by more than seven rebounds per game. The Aztecs have done well in the role of favorite off a straight up win in this price range posting a record of 24-11 ATS their last thirty-five. If they are coming off a road win in this situation, they are 12-3-1 ATS and 7-1 ATS as a conference favorite. BYU on the other hand has struggled coming off a home win and now installed as an underdog going 11-23-1 ATS and 7-18-1 ATS as a conference underdog. This game holds major Big Dance implications and Steve Fishers crew will be well prepared to take care of business. Lay the short number as the Aztecs roll past the Cougars at Viejas Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Duquesne vs. Saint Louis
Play: Duquesne -4.5

Duquesne has won and covered every time most recently as a road favorite from -3.5 to -6 and has won 27 of 31 vs losing teams. In this role this season they are 9-0 overall and 6-0 ats in lined games. They have also covered every time vs teams who score less than 63 points per game. Tonight they take on the St. Louis. The Billikens are 2-13 straight up and 3-12 ats vs winning teams. When coming off a non conference game they have failed to cover 10 of 12 times. Even worse is their 0-5 spread mark vs teams who average 76 or more points per game. Thye have revenge for an earlier loss to Duquesne. However they are 0-5 against the spread with revenge of late. Look for Duquesne to get the win and cover.

Ray Monohan

Brigham Young vs. San Diego St
Play: San Diego St -3

Since BYU beat the Aztecs last month they have lost just once to New Mexico on the road. The Cougars are of course led by Player Of the Year candidate guard Jimmer Fredette. Few have slowed him down and he dropped 43 points in the win over the Aztecs last month. As you can see from the ATS record, as good as the Cougars have been all season long they haven't been a very good bet for "investors". Since losing to BYU last month the Aztecs have been perfect (7-0 SU/4-3 ATS). SDSU wins with talent, but it is nearly evenly distributed among several experienced players and they play smartly as a unit. People may want to discount the Mountain West Conference but this is a huge game. It was moved to national TV on CBS and the winner could easily be a #1 seed on selection Sunday. If you ask me, I think it is possible they could both deserve that honour though that seems like too heady territory for anyone that makes those decisions to consider. The Aztecs have yet to lose at home this season at 13-0 and have been a solid bet there as well (7-4 ATS). I think those winning ways will continue. Trends I like for this one include Aztecs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600. Are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 home games vs. a team with a winning road record, and are 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Score will be around SDSU 75 - BYU 70.

DePaul -1

DePaul and South Florida are clearly the two worst teams in the Big East. DePaul get the nod at home Saturday as they earn their second Big East victory of the season. This is a team that has been playing their best basketball of the year over the past few weeks. The Blue Demons are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall. To compare records, DePaul is 7-20 this season while South Florida is 8-20, further proving that this is an evenly matched game.

DePaul gets the nod at home because South Florida is just 1-12 on the road this year. The Blue Demons have registered six of their seven wins at home. DePaul is 8-1 ATS in home games after having lost 2 of their last 3 games over the last 2 seasons. South Florida is 3-12 ATS after a loss by 6 points or less over the last 3 seasons. The Bulls are 4-16 ATS after a loss by 6 points or less over the last 3 seasons. Take DePaul Saturday.

1 Unit on Mississippi Rebels -1

Motivated by back-to-back upset losses on the road to Mississippi State and S. Carolina, expect the Rebels to take their game to another level in their return home Saturday. As if those defeats aren't enough to get the competitive juices flowing, Ole Miss will draw added motivation from a loss at Alabama earlier this month. The Rebs have been rock solid on their home floor again this season. They have won their last 3 at home and are 11-4 in all home games. They certainly haven't had much trouble with Bama on their home court. Going back to 1998, Ole Miss has won 10 of its last 13 at home in this series by an average score of 75-68. In addition, Mississippi is an impressive 7-1 ATS versus very good teams that are outscoring their opponents by 8-plus points per game this season. We'll lay the points with Ole Miss in this one.

Duke vs. Virginia Tech

The Hokies have won (9) straight games at Cassell Coliseum and HC Seth Greenberg has Virginia Tech on the NCAA Tournament invitation list. Knocking off #1 Duke will go a long way for the cause as well. The College Game Day Crew will have a tremendous home crowd at a feverish pitch and the Dukies will have all they can handle in Blackburgh on Saturday Night. Big Game James Patrick's complimentary selection in Saturday College Basketball action is Virginia Tech Hokies.
