Whereas the Cardinal have been known to benefit from extra time off in Pac-12 play following a previous conference affair (13-3 SU and 12-4 ATS with five or more days of rest), it’s been bad news for the Bears this season when playing with three or more days of rest as they check in with a winless 0-7 ATS mark in today’s role. Cal also made the mistake of defeating Stanford in last year’s Pac-12 tourney, sending the Cardinal to the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament, while the Bears punched a dance ticket of their own thanks to their win over Stanford. Well, it appears that Johnny Dawkins’ squad may have gotten the last laugh as they took full advantage of the lesser competition, reeling off five straight wins and covers en route to the title, while the Bears made an early first-round exit from the Big Dance. We have a feeling that the laughs will continue this afternoon in Maples Pavilion as the Cardinal are 19-8 ATS as favorites in this matchup, including 12-1 ATS when they own a win percentage of less than .800. More importantly, they are 6-1 SU and ATS in this series when playing with revenge and that brings a smile to our face. Thus, we’ll lay it as the champs – of the NIT, that is – get a much-needed comfortable conference win. We recommend a 1-unit play on Stanford.

Without top playmaking center Parise, expect 36 year old Elias to have a downturn after a 78 point banner season last year; his best in 3 seasons. The Devils top young star Henrique is out with a hand injury. The Isles 2009 #1 overall pick and captain Tavares has steadily improved in his first 3 seasons with 81 points last year and has great chemistry with Moulson (36 goals). Check out the home dogs in this game.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The New Jersey Devils start the season without the services of their former captain and top center Zach Parise who bolted to Minnesota via free agency. Parise has been a playmaking great with 251 points in his last 258 games for the Devils. Forward Patrik Elias enjoyed a banner season last year with 78 points playing alongside Parise, his highest total points in 3 season. At 36 years of age, expect Elias to take a step down in production. The Devils brightest young star is sophmore Adam Henrique coming of a 51 point rookie campaign. Henrique is out with a hand injury and will not play Saturday. The Devils boast one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play the game however Brodeur will be turning 41 this season and I dare say the French Canadian goaltender is well past his prime.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Islanders have a captain in John Tavares who is widely considered one of the top young forwards in the game. The 2009 first overall pick brokeout last season in his 3rd year in the league with 81 points, following up a 67 point sophmore season and 54 point rookie campaign. Sky is the limit for Tavares as he looks to build on his excellent chemistry with Matt Moulson combining for 150 points last season. The Islanders have veteran leadership in net with goaltender Evgeni Nabokov a proven winner with 312 wins and 196 losses with a 2.40 goals against and .912 save percentage with 52 saves over his career.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Look for a changing of the guard with these two as the Islanders have the youthful stars as the Devils have run their course. Take the New York Islanders to win ATS.

Cleveland is 10-31 SU and 18-22-1 ATS; it's coming off a 93-88 win at Portland on the 16th as a 6 point underdog. This is the end of a five game road trip for the Cavs, and I'm expecting a letdown. Kyrie Irving had 31 points.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Note though that Cleveland is in fact just 6-9 ATS in non-conference games.

Utah is 21-19 SU and 20-19-1 ATS; it's coming off back to back victories, including a 104-97 win over Miami as a 2 1/2 point underdog on the 14th.

The Jazz haven't played since Monday, and coming into this contest well rested, and extremely focused:

"I think we're not exactly where we want to be but we're in the range of being in position to get ourselves in the playoffs, and to take a good run here with this homestand that we have, we'll put ourselves in a good position," coach Tyrone Corbin said yesterday.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Al Jefferson had 23 points and 11 boards vs. Miami for his third straight double-double.

Note that Utah is 11-5 ATS in its last 16 home games.

No need to overanalyze this play. The Cavs stumble after a long West coast road trip, and the home side pulls away down the stretch after the long lay off!

San Diego has been playing well lately winning five straight games and four straight against the spread. They are 4-0 in the West Coast conference and now they play BYU in a good spot. The Cougars are coming off a tough one point loss at home against St. Mary's and will be traveling to Gonzaga next to take on the Zags.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Toreros have a veteran group who remembers the 36 point beating they took in Provo and the 19 point loss at home from last year. The team then played BYU tough in the conference tournament, only losing by five. I think they will use that experience to play the Cougars tough again today.

San Diego is 49-29 ATS as a double digit underdog since 1997 and they are 10-2 ATS in road conference games.

The Hoyas are reasonably priced here and just missed unit rated statue here tonight. Georgetown has been solid the last few years against team who struggle to score as they have won 42 of the last 48 vs teams who score less than 65 points per game. They have won 7 of the 8 times they have been favored and have a solid RPI ranking at #58. South Florida is ranked a decent #98 in the RPI. However they are 0-5 this season vs teams ranked in the top 100 RPI. They are also a lousy 2-8 off 3+ losses and have struggled in conference play going 0-4 with 1 spread win. In games vs Georgetown they have lost 6 of the last 8 times. Look for Georgetown to get the win and cover here tonight.

Minnesota is in the middle of the pack defensive in points allowed and is without their star big man, Kevin Love. The over is 4-1 in the Timberwolves last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400 and a high octane, uptempo team comes to town in Houston, second in the NBA in scoring. Of course, the Rockets never heard of defense allowing 103.7 ppg -- 30th in the NBA. They are on an 11-5 run over the total and the over is 5-1 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing record. And when they meet the over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings. Play the Rockets/T-Wolves over the total.

I think the Islanders will be an improved team this year and I do believe that the line is low for a good reason and could move a little more before the puck drops tomorrow as well. New Jersey lost a few key players in the long off season include Zach Parise which I do believe they will miss in the long run. This will be a close fought match and I look for Taveras and the Islanders to get the home dog winner on Day 1.

You've probably heard by now that the teams most adversely affected by the lockout will be those that experienced the greatest roster turnover. Count the Minnesota Wild on that list. Somehow this team missed the playoffs last season despite at one point having the most points in the league when they were sitting 20-7-3. They actually finished 14 points off the playoff pace!
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
As a result, there were major moves made in the offseason, most notably Zach Parise and Ryan Suter coming in, as both were given matching 13-year contracts. It is going to take time for the Minnesota offense to come together with these two plus all the other newcomers. The problem is worsened by the fact the Wild ranked 30th (that's last!) in the league last season, scoring only 2.02 goals per game.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Northwest Division rival Colorado may be a young club, but there is considerable talent here. Consider that the Avs actually finished with more points than the Wild a year ago. And that's despite losing seven of their final 10 games, otherwise Colorado could very well have ended up in the postseason. These teams split six meetings last year, but the Avalanche won the final two, outscoring Minnesota 9-1. I think this is a good price on the underdog on Opening Night.

Who knows, these marquee mid-major sides could get together again in March! But in mid-January, Butler might be at a disadvantage if hot-shooting Arkansas transfer G Rotnei Clarke (16.3 ppg & 44.4% triples) is sidelined, as expected, due to a strained neck. Without such a unique offensive threat, the edge would go to Gonzaga, especially with its much-improved frontline getting increasing contributions from long-haired 7-0 PF Kelly Olynyk (18.1 ppg), a matchup nightmare who can put the ball on the floor and play facing the basket, giving Mark Few the sort of versatile frontline dimension his teams have lacked in recent years. Zags have only stumbled once (vs. the same once-hot Illinois team that beat Butler in the Maui Classic) and have won all of their road games, inclduding at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando during Thanksgiving week and a major intersectional a few weeks ago at Oklahoma State.

Richmond returns home following a loss at Butler on Wednesday, its second straight loss to fall to 1-2 in the Atlantic Ten. Both of those defeats came on the road however where the Spiders are 2-5 but things have been much better at home where they are 9-1, the lone loss coming against Davidson. Richmond has played a very tough schedule this season including games against Minnesota, Wake Forest, Kansas, George Mason and the aforementioned Davidson so the 11-7 overall record is actually not bad at all. The Spiders are just 3-12 against the number this season which is a money burning record but I think it helps us with the value here. Charlotte is one of the more pleasant surprises in the conference as it is off to a perfect 3-0 start but the competition has been pretty average. A 15-2 record overall looks good on paper but the 49ers overall schedule is ranked 296th in the nation so that has had a lot to do with it. The defense has been outstanding but while allowing opponents to shoot just 33.8 percent in nine home games, Charlotte is allowing 43.3 percent away from home which obviously isn't bad but it is a huge increase from its home numbers. Richmond falls into a solid contrarian situation where we play on teams where the line is +3 to -3 after 15 or more games that are averaging between 67 and 74 ppg going up against teams allowing 63 ppg or less, after two straight losses by 10 points or more. This situation is 43-15 ATS (74.1 percent) since 1997.

The Hornets are one of the most underrated teams in the NBA right now due to their 13-26 start. However, this team is finally at full strength health-wise, which is the biggest reason for its recent turnaround. New Orleans has gone 6-1 SU & 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games overall, which includes wins over the Spurs, Mavs, Rockets and Celtics. While the Hornets come in on two days' rest having last played on Wednesday, the Warriors will be playing the second of a back-to-back and their 3rd game in 4 days. They lost at San Antonio 88-95 last night, and they won't have the energy to keep up with well-rested New Orleans in this one. That's especially the case considering the Warriors remain without their best players in PG Stephen Curry (ankle).

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been much more competitive in their last five games, and I like their chances of staying within single-digits of the Utah Jazz tonight, possibly pulling off the upset.

Cleveland is 3-1-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall. That includes a 99-83 home win over Atlanta as a 4-point dog, as well as a 93-88 road win at Portland as a 6-point dog. They also lost 91-98 at Denver as a 12.5-point dog, and 118-124 at Sacramento as a 6-point dog during this stretch.

The Jazz are in a huge letdown spot tonight. They have won their last two contests, which included a 104-97 home victory over the defending champion Miami Heat last time out. Off such a big win, it will be hard for Utah to get up emotionally to face the Cavaliers tonight. As a result, it will be difficult for the Jazz to cover this inflated number.

This play falls into a system that is 46-21 (68.7%) ATS over the last 5 seasons. It tells us to bet against home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (UTAH) - hot team - having covered 6 or 7 of their last 8 against the spread, with a winning percentage of between 45-55% on the season. Bet the Cavaliers Saturday.

Maryland has played just two true road games, winning by 20 at Northwestern and losing by 7 at Miami. The Terps have outrebounded all 17 teams this year. They get points from Alex Len, Dez Wells, Charles Mitchell and Nick Faust as well as Padgett. They are young but deep. They play solid defense and will need to at the Dean Dome vs. UNC. The Tar Heels plays just one senior in Dexter Strickland, who is a shooting guard who struggles to make outside shots. Leslie McDonald is out with an injury. UNC does have McAdoo inside as well as a young PG named Marcus Paige who is just 155 pounds. At home UNC has lost to Miami in the ACC, beat ECU by 6 and beat UNLV in a close game. I expect a close game so take the 6 points.
