Thursday night freebie is the Miami Heat plus the points at Oklahoma City.

There is no doubt in my mind the Thunder were caught looking ahead the other night when their four game winning streak was rudely snapped by the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Still, the Thunder have not been able to make a dent in the Miami armor, and Miami does come into OKC with wins in their last six games straight up, the last three coming by double-digits.

Including the playoffs, Miami has now won five straight against Oklahoma City.

Until I see evidence that the Thunder can actually win a game against the Heat, there is no way I am backing Oklahoma City to cover in the role of favorite against the Heat!

Take Miami plus the points.

3* MIAMI

South Dakota +3

Home court can be huge in the Summit League, and these two teams have shown that to be the case time and time again this year.South Dakota comes in struggling of late, but a lot of that probably has to do with the fact they have had to play five of their last six games away from home. The Coyotes have played a tremendously tough schedule this season and mostly so away from home, losing nonconference games at Wyoming, Gonzaga, Iowa and Kansas State and then have had to travel to conference powers North Dakota State and South Dakota State (which they won). One of their most impressive showings were just a few weeks back against their opponent here in this game, beating Oakland by 19 points in Oakland.

Speaking of Oakland, give this team some credit as they knocked off the conference big boys last week, beating North Dakota State and South Dakota State in a three-day span. The Golden Grizzlies have won five straight games currently, but keep in mind that they have played seven of their last eight games overall at home. This is a huge fact for a team that is just 4-12 away from home this season. Though a fairly decent program, Oakland has been awful on defense these last few years, ranking in the bottom five in all of CBB in effective field goal percentage on defense and are dead last again this season in league play in two-point defense, and that is for the second year in a row in the Summit League.

Tough spot here for Oakland to travel all the way to South Dakota from Michigan and get up for a bottom-level league team, especially after two emotionally draining wins just last week. Take South Dakota and the points here.

Clippers vs. Lakers
Play: Over

All teams on the road vs the Lakers with no rest off a home game have played over 17 of the last 19 times. In the series between these two the last 7 games have posted over the total. The Clippers have gone over 11 of 15 times vs teams who average 99 or more and 7 of 10 in Division games. The last 5 times they have played on the road they have played over the total. The Lakers have played over in 10 of 14 as a dog, 6 of 9 vs Division opponents and 13 of 19 vs teams who score 99 or more. Look for this one to fly over the total tonight.

The Predators have not been lighting up the scoreboard this year. They went through a goalless drought of nearly 177 minutes before Colin Wilson scored in OT for the 1-0 win over the Sharks on Tuesday. "I mean obviously we want to score but we're just preaching put the puck on the net," Preds' defenseman Ryan Ellis said after. "I think we've been outshot a lot in the early stretch here." Now Nashville gets a look at the Coyotes Mike Smith for the first time this year. Smith of course posted a 1.73 GAA and eliminated the Predators in five games in the Western Conference semifinals last season. Most recently Smith made a season-high 41 saves in a 3-2 OT win over Colorado on Monday (the Coyotes have seen the total go under the number in 21 of their last 35 when playing with two days of rest). Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne has been keeping his team in games, going 5-1-0 with a minuscule 0.97 GAA in his last six games (Nashville has already seen the total go under the number in in all four games that its played vs. teams with losing records). Two great goaltenders and a couple of teams that put an added emphasis on defensive play. I'll recommend a second look at the under in this one.

Colorado is 4-6-1, and is coming off three straight losses, including a 3-2 setback in OT to Phoenix on the 11th.

''At the end of the day, it's a terrible bounce,'' said the Avs Matt Duchene. ''As soon as you see it happen, you kind of know it's going to go in. That doesn't happen very often. It's a tough bounce.''

The Avs had there chances though, and were simply unable to put the puck in the net, going 0 for 4 with the man advantage.

Note that Colorado has seen the total go "under" the number in three of four this year when playing against a team with a losing record.

LeBron James is getting a lot of love from the media lately, after scoring 30+ points and shooting 60% or better in six straight games. Once again we're hearing comparisons to MJ, and questions as to whether or not LBJ is the "greatest ever".
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
I personally find such talk laughable. As good as LeBron is, when you put it in perspective, he's a long way off from Jordan's six championships, and the Heat are a long way off from being a dynasty. People say "can anybody beat the Heat?" If you watched the playoffs last year, you'd already know that the Celtics came very close, and probably should have won their series versus Miami last year.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Heat come into Oklahoma City today with a road record just one game above .500. The Thunder are hard to beat at home, with a record of 23-3 at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Miami was fortunate to come away with a win in their last game at home versus Portland. The Blazers had the lead at the half, and twice they held leads of as many as 14 points. With Portland leading with under two minutes to play, the Heat went on a 14-0 run in the final minutes to close the game and win their sixth straight.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
If ever the Heat were in a let down spot, this would be it. LeBron is on top of the world, and the Heat are media darlings, getting a lot of press, feeding their collective egos.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Thunder should take care of business at home tonight, taking the wind out of the sails of Miami, sending the Heat crashing back down to earth.

Stanford still thinking it might be able to make a late run at an NCAA at-large berth after last Saturday’s victory at Arizona State. But not sure the Cardinal can extend the margin on a more-confident SC bunch that has looked like a different team since Kevin O’Neill’s ouster and the promotion of Bob Cantu (who is letting the Trojans run) as interim HC. Cantu is making a statement to keep the job on full-time basis, as the Trojans have upped their scoring by more than 8 ppg since the coaching change, with Wake Forest transfer G J.T. Terrell (14 ppg since Cantu’s elevation) no longer looking over his shoulder at a bellowing O’Neill if he misses a shot. At near double-digit price, Trojans worth a very hard look.

If you are looking to go to the extra board for a game, you can do a lot worse than taking a look to see if the Belmont Bruins are playing. An under-the-radar OVC team, Belmont has been rock solid for the past two decades under Rick Byrd winning 121 games the last five years, 57 over the past two years. For that reason, Belmont's ATS record is not staggering and at first glance, a bit suspect. The 20-5 Bruins are just 10-9 vs the points as a favorite but that's simply because they are always over-valued. A ggod example of this was the first meeting between these two in Nashville where Belmont (-15) easily rolled in a 78-66 non-cover win. In that game, Tennessee State was forced into 16 turnovers by the relentless Belmont pressure. The Tigers have a gaudy 5-1 ATS mark at home but keep in mind they haven't played any of the top three of the OVC .... . Eastern Kentucky, Murray State or BELMONT. No look ahead here as Belmont has just Eastern Illinois before playing their bracket buster matchup hosting Ohio U. Belmont 77-63

This matchup falls into a system to play on favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points like Loyola when they are revenging a same season loss vs an opponent, in a game involving two teams winning between 60% - 80% of their games. That system tightens up to 101-61 ATS when that favorite is playing at home and returning four starters from the previous season.

Canisius is 2-9 AT versus good defensive teams that are allowing less than 64 points per game over the last 2 seasons. The Loyola Maryland defense is holding opponents to 62.9 points and they are a respectable 9-3 straight up on their home court.

With Canisius in the middle of a five game road stretch I expect to see them struggle tonight against the Greyhounds. These teams are tied for second in the MAAC and with a horrible Siena team on deck, Loyola has had all week to prepare for the Golden Griffins. Lay the points in this game as the Greyhounds bump Canisius down in conference standings.

Jim Feist

Heat vs Thunder
Play: Over

Miami can play any style, but prefers to run, 5th in the NBA in scoring and on a 7-3 run over the total. The over is 7-1 in the Heat's last 8 games following a win, 6-1 over the total playing on 1 days rest and 5-2 over the total against the Western Conference. Oklahoma City loves to run, as well, tops in the NBA in scoring with 106.4 ppg. In a marquee national TV game, look for the offenses to shine and the over is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings in Oklahoma City. Play the Heat/Thunder over the total.

The A-10 title chase has evolved into one of the best races in the country. This is a solid league and right just two games are separating the first nine teams. VCU is one of the leaders at 7-2, which is absolutely not surprising. But Massachusetts is right there at 6-3 and I have to admit to being almost shocked at how well they're playing defensively. Plus, the Minutemen were right there in all three league losses, so the reality is that they have yet to be decisively defeated by any conference rival. There are also a couple of glaring stats on the VCU side that are a little troubling. The Rams are allowing a ridiculous number of offensive boards, and they've also been very erratic with their long range shooting as well as their free throws. Those numbers would seem to make a runaway unlikely. Obviously, the road team is going to have to avoid getting turned over so often they lose touch on the scoreboard. But the Minutemen like to play at a frantic pace, so I don't think they'll be overwhelmed here. VCU should win the game, but I can see this being competitive and I'm willing to take my chances grabbing the doubles with UMass.

The Cardinal (15-9) has won four of their last five games after their 62-59 win at Arizona State on Saturday. Now Stanford returns home where they are 10-2 with an average winning margin of +10.2 PPG. The Trojans (11-13), on the other hand, are 2-6 on the road with an average losing margin of -5.2 PPG. Stanford has covered the point spread in 6 of their last 8 home games against teams with a losing record on the road. Furthermore, they will be seeking to avenge their 71-69 loss at USC back on January 3rd. The Cardinal should take care of business here as they have covered the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games against teams with a losing record. The Trojans have won three straight games after their 71-60 win versus Washington last Sunday as a 2-point favorite -- but they are just 2-11-1 ATS in their last 14 games following a point spread win. Additionally, USC is just 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 games on the road. Lastly, the Trojans are just 7-18-1 AS in their last 16 games against teams with a winning percentage over 60%. Take Stanford minus the points in this one.
