Two Northwest Division teams that have been struggling in the early going meet Wednesday night in Vancouver with the Canucks hosting the Colorado Avalanche. Both clubs enter in off back to back losses. This will be the Avs' third straight road contest after losing in both San Jose and Edmonton.

Meanwhile, the Canucks are off a three-game California swing that ended with losses to San Jose and Los Angeles. They face an Avalanche team that's gone Under in four straight games. Colorado's done that four other times the past two seasons and on all four occasions they went Over in the next game. Note they've given up four goals in back to back games and three times this season. Against San Jose and Edmonton, they allowed a total of seven power play goals.

Vancouver has dominated Colorado in recent seasons, earning at least a point in 17 straight head to head meetings, going 15-0-2 during that span. They have blown leads in multiple losses this season, but should bounce back here offensively. There have been exactly five goals scored in five straight Canucks games. Tonight, they get over the hump.

For years, the mantra in this series for Stanford was “there’s no place like home” as the Cardinal have posted a 20-2 record SU and 15-6-1 ATS at Maples Pavilion versus the Ducks since 1990. However, both of those SU home losses came during the last couple of seasons at the hands of Dana Altman’s crew, and you can add a 2011 road loss at Eugene into the mix. This double-revenge situation from 2012 brings up an interesting stat from our database: Stanford is 18-9-1 ATS with double revenge from the previous season, including a 6-1 ATS mark versus teams with a win percentage above .830. Meanwhile, Oregon has struggled in games after facing Washington (the team that defeated them in the Pac-12 title game last year), going just 3-7 SU the last ten skirmishes, including 0-2 ATS the last two away, in post-Husky tilts. Johnny Dawkins will have the defending NIT champs clicking their red heels Wednesday night as the Cardinal starts a new Maples winning streak against the dastardly Ducks. We recommend a 1-unit play on Stanford.

True, Creighton shook the effects of its recent two-game slump by whipping Southern Illinois by 30 on Sunday. And rampaging F Doug McDermott already buried Mizzou State with 39-point explosion at Springfield Jan. 11 in a 74-52 Bluejays romp. But at an expected very hefty price (opening number at 20/20.5), we can make a decent case for Paul Lusk’s under-the-radar Bears, who have covered 8 of their last 9 (only spread loss in that span vs. Creighton) and did a decent job on the other Bleujays, save McDermott, in the first meeting. MSU sr. star G Anthony Downing capable of much better than his subpar 4-for-11 shooting infirst meeting.

Both of these teams play solid defense so I think points will be at a premium tonight, so that makes a big home underdog rather appealing to me. The public is in love with Miami after the Hurricanes recent run in which they covered six of seven in winning seven straight. This team beat Duke and embarrassed Florida State in their last two games, and the public has a short memory so that is what they are focusing on.

Virginia Tech on the other hand is coming off a bad stretch to start ACC play. They were blown out by double digits in the first two against Maryland and BC, then won at Georgia Tech and at home against Wake, but were beaten soundly by Virginia before playing Clemson tough at home last time out.

Miami has NC State on deck and this is a classic look ahead situation. I'll take the large number of points with the home dog here tonight.

You want to take underdogs who have been beaten by 48 points or more against the spread in their last ten games in the month of January. These teams are 43-14 (75%) the last five seasons.

Jerrod Hasse left UNC as an assistant to become head coach of the UAB Blazers and they have struggled in conference action. UTEP just won at ECU on a late shot. The Miners get solid guard play which is key in college basketball action.

Red hot Wolves come in to this highly contested series on a 4 game winning streak, covering 3 of 4 winning 94-66 on January 3rd. Michigan’s only loss was on January 13th at Ohio State 56-53. Since, they have won three straight against Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue. The #1 Wolves have been a superior shooting unit this season hitting an incredible 51% from the field generating 78.5 points per game. The Wildcats were 8-3 at one time, but have lost 6 of their last 10 after being drubbed at Nebraska over the weekend 64-49. We note NW had faced three ranked opponents in a week’s time, so a letdown against the Huskers was easily explained. The major strength for the ‘Cats is their changing defenses that have held the schedule to 61.5 points per game this season. In this series, UM is 13-6 ATS with a huge edge overall in Big 10 games at 28-11-1 ATS. However, with UM having Indiana next, the value lies in the huge number.

Maryland has Home loss revenge here tonight. However this has not been a good thing as they are just 1-8 straight up and ats in this role, their 6-17 road record scares no one. They may have a better record than FSU. However the RPI Rankings tell a different story as these two are ranked 64 and 69 with Florida St having played a tougher schedule, 30th in the nation to be exact. The Seminoles are also a perfect 3-0 this season vs teams ranked 50 to 100 in the RPI and they are likely to rebound off their worst shooting performance a 30% effort in their last game at Miami. Maryland has failed to cover 22 of 29 times the past few season vs winning teams in the 2nd half. Look for Florida St to emerge with a win and cover.

After Miami throttled Duke at home by 27 points a week ago, it avoided a letdown and took down ACC Florida St. by 24 points to make it seven straight wins including six in the conference. The Hurricanes did catch a scheduling break as the Seminoles were coming off a late second win over Clemson in its game prior to that but nonetheless, it was impressive for the Hurricanes. Now Miami hits the road for a big two-game stretch starting tonight and continuing Saturday at NC State. The Hurricanes will have their hands full come Saturday after the Wolfpack lost at Virginia on Tuesday so there may be a peak ahead to that game. This is a lot of points to be laying on the road and considering Miami was only favored by six points at Boston College in its last road game, this one is more than overinflated. Virginia Tech has lost two straight games and six of its last eight but it is banking on a return home to get things turned around following a tough loss at Clemson last time out. Miami's biggest challenge will be stopping Hokies guard Erick Green, whose 25.2-ppg average leads the nation. Miami is definitely the toast of the town as it is now ranked 14th in the AP Poll and only once since 1990 had a team leaped 11 spots in the rankings in one week. That presents a great go against opportunity in my book and we aren't even asking the Hokies to win as they should comfortably stay within this overpriced number.

Every once in a while the Miami Heat seem to lose their focus, dropping a few games when you least expect. The Eastern Conference is kind of a dog again this year so they have the luxury of just getting through the season. Tonight they should have more focus on the road at Brooklyn, a team that wants to think they are in the same league as Miami. The Heat have waxed them twice already this season but both of those game were in South Beach. That -2 may indicate otherwise but I think Miami will do so again, I am not putting much stock in their OT loss to Boston on Sunday. This is a rare game after a couple of days off and they should be focused and ready to dominate again.

Expect NM Coach Alford to have his Team prepared and ready to play off a loss @ SDST where NM offense scored a pitiful 34 points. New Mexico under Alford has done well after a S/U loss in the past. New Mexico is well coached and defensively they do a good job at taking away what their opponent does well on offense. With Wyoming playing without scoring threat Luke Martinez, the Cowboys only other real threat on offense is Leonard Washington. Look for NM to slow Washington down. Wyoming has lost S/U at Home to Air Force and Boise this Season, New Mexico is alot better than both these Teams. Look for NM to bounce back off a loss and get the Win Tonight ! Bet early as this line will go up.

Roll the Chipps tonight as the Home team will be the right side ... originally leaned the Chipps here guys but after a re work of the power ratings we go Bulls - 9.3 points.... How does a 9-10 ball club grabbing 7 to a 7-13 ball club looks to us way way too easy... THE EDGES ARE BIG HERE IN THE DEFENSIVE / BOARDS... ... We are playing the Bulls to cover the 7 as the sharp side Wednesday will be the HOME TOWN BULLS...Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

Dave Cokin

UTEP at UAB
Pick UTEP

A pair of teams heading in opposite directions collide in Birmingham tonight as UTEP takes on UAB. Tim Floyd has the Miners rolling and UTEP is currently one of the hottest spread teams in the country. This squad was better than its record early on. I have no clue as to why it kept happening, but early in the campaign, UTEP was coming out of the starting blocks stone cold almost every game, and they kept running into opponents that couldn't miss. That issue has been resolved. UAB is heading the wrong way. First year coach Jerod Haase hasn't been able to right the ship, and UAB is not just losing, they're losing decisively. The Blazers have only one close (one possession) loss all season, so it's not just bad luck in tight games. Hot team with what sure looks like a massive coaching edge points thee way to a call on UTEP to notch the win and cover as small road chalk.

Jim Feist

Detroit Pistons at Indiana Pacers
Pick: Indiana Pacers

Detroit is not a good road team and the Pistons are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning record. They take on an Indiana team off a tough one-point loss at Denver, and the Pacers are second in the NBA in points allowed and rebounds. The Pacers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. the NBA Central and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days. And the Pistons are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 meetings, including 2-7 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Indiana. Play the Pacers!
