Tuesday 3/23/21 thread for handicapping service plays and expert predictions for NBA, MLB & NCAAB games

BROOKLYN @ PORTLAND | 03/23 | 10:00 PM EDT
PORTLAND -1.5
ANALYSIS: We'll go ahead and grab this now as the Nets will be without Kyrie Irving (and Kevin Durant but we knew that) plus key reserve Landry Shamet -- and the team is listing James Harden as questionable, although I'm sure the Beard will play. If he doesn't, this spread will really rise. Portland will be eager to play and wipe out Sunday's home destruction embarrassment against the Mavericks. Damian Lillard had a 60-point game vs. the Nets last season.

TAMPA BAY @ DALLAS | 03/23 | 8:30 PM EDT
TAMPA BAY -160
ANALYSIS: My model says the Lightning win in 70 percent of the simulations, so you're getting excellent value at this number. Tampa Bay is riding a four-game winning streak and has lost only three of its last 16 contests, including once in a shootout. Three of its victories in that span came against Dallas, including one that began its current run. The Lightning's first two wins versus the Stars were shutouts, and they've outscored Dallas 10-3 overall this season. The Stars have gone 6-10-8 since beginning 2020-21 with four straight wins and have dropped five consecutive home meetings with Tampa Bay. Take the Lightning.
WASHINGTON @ NEW YORK | 03/23 | 7:30 PM EDT
NEW YORK -2
ANALYSIS: My model says the Knicks cover in well over 60 percent of the simulations, so you're getting strong value at this number. New York has performed much better at home than on the road this season, going 12-8 while nearly posting a fifth straight win in its building before falling to Philadelphia by one point in overtime on Sunday. The Wizards have dropped three straight on the road and suffered an 18-point loss against the Knicks at home last month. New York is 6-1 ATS in its last seven as a home favorite. Expect that record to improve on Tuesday.

STETSON @ COASTAL CAROLINA | 03/23 | 5:30 PM EDT
STETSON +7.5
ANALYSIS: The Hatters are playing close to home in Daytona Beach and have the edge in fan support. Thanks in part to that support, they made a furious second-half rally Monday to upset Bowling Green 53-52. It was their first-ever Division I postseason win. This is a team that beat Liberty and played a tough non-conference schedule that included Florida and Miami. Coastal Carolina is clearly the more talented team, and wants a full-court game. But look for Stetson to slow the pace, keep it close and cover for the sixth time in its last eight tries as an underdog.

L.A. LAKERS @ NEW ORLEANS | 03/23 | 7:30 PM EDT
NEW ORLEANS -6.5
ANALYSIS: LeBron James' teams always struggle when he is not in the lineup, and the Lakers are no exception. Los Angeles is 11-22 in games without LeBron, including 2-4 the past two years. The Lakers will eventually adjust but not for this game. Los Angeles is a heavy underdog in this game, and it is unusual because there is a large record gap between the 28-15 Lakers and 18-24 Pelicans. Teams that are favorites or even money in the regular season facing a team that they have at least nine fewer wins than on the season are 384-279-9 ATS.

PHOENIX @ MIAMI | 03/23 | 8:00 PM EDT
PHOENIX -1.5
ANALYSIS: Playing on the road has not phased the Suns, who are 13-5 ATS away from Phoenix. The Heat are coming off of back-to-back losses at home and are just 8-13-1 there ATS this season. Add in the Suns winning eight of their last 10 games overall, and I like them to cover this small line.

L.A. LAKERS @ NEW ORLEANS | 03/23 | 7:30 PM EDT
NEW ORLEANS -6
ANALYSIS: This is our second look at the Lakers without LeBron James, and of course Anthony Davis has been away for awhile as well. I think back to two years ago how awful the Lakers were, and LeBron checked out mentally. We get that team again for a few weeks. The Suns beat them up Sunday night, and the Pelicans, who are fresh off their big win at Denver, should be up for the challenge of burying the Lakers. Pelicans to cover.
PHOENIX @ MIAMI | 03/23 | 8:00 PM EDT
PHOENIX -1.5
ANALYSIS: The Suns have won and covered their last two games and start a road trip in Miami on Tuesday. The Heat have a lot of injury questions, but Jimmy Butler is expected to start. The Heat have lost their last three against Memphis and Indiana twice after winning and covering their previous five. The Suns are 6-0 ATS in their last six as road favorites and 8-0 ATS in their last eight road games against teams with winning home records.

FLORIDA ST. @ MICHIGAN | 03/28 | 5:00 PM EDT
MICHIGAN -3
ANALYSIS: Michigan certainly feels the impact of not having Isaiah Livers on the floor, but they're still a very good defensive team that is now undervalued. The Big Ten struggles combined with Florida State's impressive win over Colorado has created a nice value spot for the Wolverines. My simulations make this number -4.7 thanks to Michigan's strength on the defensive end of the floor. Hunter Dickinson avoiding early foul trouble will be key, but Michigan should be fine against a Florida State team that ranks outside of the top 25 in terms of defensive efficiency. Lay it.
