BEN BURNS

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Burns Big Monday ROUT

I'm taking the points with SAN DIEGO. The Toreros, who play with "revenge" from a loss (still covered) at Gonzaga last month, bring plenty of confidence and momentum into tonight's game. That's because they've gone a perfect 7-0 (5-2 ATS) since that 1/19 meeting. That includes a solid 8-point win over St. Mary's, a ranked team which has defeated Gonzaga. The Toreros held the Gaels to a mere 55 points in that game. That type of excellent defense has been their trademark as they've allowed an average of just 57.4 points per game since the beginning of conference play and 59.7 on this floor for the season. That's worth noting as the Bulldogs have really struggled against quality defensive teams. In fact, they're just 2-9 ATS their last 11 games against teams which allow 64 points or less and a money-burning 8-20 ATS the past three seasons. During that same stretch, the Toreros have gone a profitable 20-10 ATS when listed as underdogs and 9-5 ATS when attempting to avenge an earlier road loss. They're also 5-2 ATS the last seven times they were listed as home underdogs in the +6.5 to +9 range. These teams are both tied with St. Mary's in the loss column in the WCC, making this a huge game. Not that the Toreros need any added motivation. However, it's still worth noting that their coach Bill Grier has added incentive to beat Gonzaga, as he was an assistant coach there before being named San Diego's head coach prior to this season. Look for Grier's Toreros to continue their recent strong play, taking this game down to the wire and earning (at least) the cover.

Burns Big Monday Total of the Month

I'm playing on Syracuse and Louisville to finish UNDER the number. These teams are both coming off back to back high-scoring games. That has helped keep tonight's over/under line generously high and I feel that we're now getting excellent value with the UNDER. Despite the relatively high final score of 77-70, looking at Syracuse's last game and we find that the Orange actually played well defensively, as they held the Hoyas to just 41.8 percent shooting. Note that the Orange have seen the UNDER go a profitable 19-9 the past few seasons when coming off a win vs. a Big East team in their previous game. Looking back further and we find the UNDER at 63-34 the last 97 times that the Orange played a game (with a total) after coming off a victory over a conference opponent. During that time, they've also seen the UNDER go 47-26 when listed as underdogs, including a perfect 5-0 when listed as road underdogs in the +9.5 to +12 range. As mentioned, Louisville also comes off back to back high-scoring games. However, both those games came on the road. In their most recent home game, the Cardinals help Georgetown to just 51 points in a game that stayed below the total by double-digits. In their previous game here, they limited Rutgers to just 50. Prior to that, they held St. John's to 57, Marquette to 51, West Virginia to 54 and Cincinnati to 58. For the season, they are allowing just 55.9 points per game on this floor while limiting opponents to a 36.8 shooting percentage. They've seen the UNDER go 12-7 the past few seasons when playing with one or less day's rest in between games and a profitable 15-4 after having scored 80 or more points in their previous game. They've also shown a longterm tendency to "slow things down" against high-scoring teams, as they've seen the UNDER go 37-19 the last 56 times (games with a total) they faced a team which scores 77 or more points per game. Look for another strong defensive performance by the Cardinals tonight and for the final combined score to fall below the number. *Big Monday TOM

NHL

Burns Conference GOW

I'm playing on the LA KINGS. The Coyotes, who defeated the Kings at Phoenix on Friday, have a much better record for the season. However, the Kings have actually earned more victories over the past five or six weeks. In fact, LA has won 10 of its last 17 games, including four of the last five at home, while Phoenix has won only eight of its past 17. That includes a 1-4 mark the last five times that the Coyotes played on the road. Despite picking up a couple of wins lately, note that the Coyotes remain an ugly 8-17 their last 25 games played in the month of February and 42-72 (-42.4) over the past decade. In addition to playing with "revenge" from Friday's loss, the Kings should be highly motivated to earn their first victory in the season series. Indeed, if not for losing every game against Phoenix, the Kings might still have a shot at the playoffs. Although they have played as well over the past several weeks as they have at anytime in recent memory, the Kings are priced much more reasonably than they usually are when they've been a host in this series. They were laying -165 and -175 for this season's two earlier meetings here and they've been favored by a minimum of -120 in 19 of the past 20 series meetings here. Note that although they were beaten in both games here this season, the Kings still remain a healthy 12-4 with four ties the last 20 times they hosted the Coyotes. Look for an inspired effort from the revenge-minded Kings as they do some damage to their division rivals and improve to 38-32 the last 70 times they played a home game with an over/under line of six or greater. *Western Conference GOW

Priceless Picks

1 Unit on Manhattan +4

I like the Jaspers catching a couple field goals at home. Manhattan has looked very good in its past 2 games, beating Canisius and sticking it to a better Marist team. Manhattan has won 7 of the last 10 home meetings in this matchup. Siena heads out on the road after a disappointing home loss to Loyola-MD. Without any momentum heading into Manhattan to play the streaking Jaspers, I don't think Siena can get the job done. The Saints are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite and will fail in the favorite role again here. Take the points.

Rhode Island Rams (+) vs Xavier

The Rams are absolutely catching the Musketeers at the right time to spring the upset. Of course with the way this line dropped this morning it may not be considered much of an upset but many still don't see Rhode Island in nearly the same light they see the Musketeers. That general consensus opinion may change after tonight.
