Friday's Best NBA Bets
By Covers.com

Washington Wizards at Utah Jazz (-9.5, 195.5)

Just when you thought that the woeful Wizards might be making, they go and drop another stinker.

The Wizards opened their current five-game road swing by upsetting Detroit and Portland, picking up their sixth and seventh wins of the season. Then Washington was snapped by to reality in a 102-84 loss against the Los Angeles Clippers, dropping the cash as a 13-point underdog.

After the game it sounded like the same old story for the Wizards.

“I don’t look at this game as an 18-point loss, we just ran out of gas at the end,” Wizards Coach Randy Wittman told reporters. “You’re not pleased with a loss, but we fought. We hung in there. We competed. Came up short.”

The Wizards may be able to hang around against Utah on Friday after they have a day to rest their legs. The Jazz have lost five of their last six, covering the number just twice during that span.

Offense has been most of the problem as the Jazz have been held to fewer than 90 points four times during that same stretch.

Pick: Wizards

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-8.5, 186.5)

The Phoenix Suns can finally take a breath. The worst of their schedule is over and not a moment too soon.

The Suns just played three games in three nights and couldn’t pick up a win or a payday in any of those, dropping to 12-18 straight up and against the spread this season.

"Yeah, I got to say it was a pretty tough stretch," center Marcin Gortat told reporters after a 101-99 home loss to Atlanta. "The last time I played, three games in a row was five years ago in the summer league, so it was pretty tough. But that's not an excuse. Every team's going to have back-to-back-to-backs like that. So, we've just got to try to find a way to win the games, especially at home.”

After an off day, it doesn’t get any easier for the Suns. The Lakers are 9-5 against the spread at home this season and own the No. 4 scoring defense in the Association. After this one, the two clubs complete the home-and-home Sunday.

Pick: Under

Game of the day: Dallas Mavericks at Philadelphia 76ers
By Covers.com

Dallas Mavericks at Philadelphia 76ers (-3, 181)

THE STORY: The Philadelphia 76ers have utilized scoring balance and depth to rise among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Dallas Mavericks could be struggling in both those departments when they visit the Sixers Friday night. Dallas will have to overcome an injury-ravaged backcourt as it seeks to extend its winning streak to six games. The reigning NBA champs will be without three guards, putting additional pressure on aging veterans Jason Kidd, 38, and Vince Carter, 35.

THE LINE: Oddsmakers have the 76ers set as 3-point home favorites at the open with a 181-point total.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (19-11): Sixth man extraordinaire Jason Terry and Roddy Beaubois had already been ruled out of Friday’s game for personal reasons, and Dallas took another hit when guard Delonte West fractured and dislocated his right ring finger in Wednesday’s win over Denver. Forward Lamar Odom picked up the slack by scoring 14 points against the Nuggets – his highest output in 10 games. Last season’s Sixth Man of the Year, Odom has averaged 14.4 points in 21 career games against the Sixers.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (20-10): Philadelphia’s bid for a perfect 3-0 road trip was buried by a hail of 3-pointers in a loss at Orlando on Wednesday. The Sixers also received more bad news regarding center Spencer Hawes, who is being sent to a specialist for his strained Achilles tendon. Hawes has missed five straight games and 15 of the last 17, leaving rookies Lavoy Allen and Nikola Vucevic to man the point. Allen has started the last three games and scored a total of four points.

TRENDS:

- Dallas is 17-6-1 against the spread in its last 24 road games.
- The under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
- Philadelphia is 1-4 against the number in its last five overall.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Dallas has won five of six and eight of the last 10 meetings with Philadelphia.

2. The Sixers are 12-2 with Hawes in the lineup and 8-7 without him.

PREDICTION: 76ers 94, Mavericks 87.

Inside the Paint - Friday
By Chris David
VegasInsider.com

Openers

If you follow our NBA content, then you’re well aware that we use opening number from BetOnline.com, who puts out the first number. While they’re trying to play with the big offshore outfits, it should be noted that they too adjust after the “Big Three” of CRIS, Greek and Pinnacle post. I will say BetOnline.com is very strong with their side numbers, but the totals need work. Here are some adjustments on ‘over/under’ numbers for Friday that had moves of 2 points or more.

Bucks-Magic: 188.5 to 191.5
Heat-Cavs: 199 to 196
Wolves-Rockets: 198.5 to 196.5
Nuggets-Grizzlies: 199 to 196
Suns-Lakers: 185.5 to 187.5

Lin-Sanity

Friday’s New York-New Orleans matchup has no opener listed due to injuries. The Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony (groin) is ‘questionable’ and the Hornets have a slew of banged-up players that are either ‘questionable’ or ‘out.’ Even if Anthony doesn’t go, you would assume New York will be giving double digits at home. The Knicks have won seven straight (6-1 against the spread) and all the talk is about point guard Jeremy Lin, yet nobody has mentioned the defense. During this run, only two teams have busted 90-plus points (92,93) and that’s translated into 5-2 run for the ‘under.’ The Hornets have trouble scoring when they’re healthy so that streak should continue. Make a note that New Orleans has won and covered two straight after struggling through a 0-8 skid both SU and ATS. Gamblers could play on the Hornets with the look-ahead angle, since N.Y. welcomes Dallas on Sunday but that’s reaching.

Sleeping Giants

Who won the NBA Finals last year? Forgot? The Mavericks (19-11 SU, 17-12 ATS) have been inconsistent at times this season, just like everybody else. However, the club has ripped off five straight wins against good teams too. On Friday, Dallas begins a tough two-game test against Philadelphia before meeting the aforementioned Knicks on Sunday. The 76ers (20-10 SU, 19-11 ATS) own the better record and they’re favored (-3) at home but they’ve been humbled in their last five games, going 2-3 both SU and ATS. The wins were against the Cavs and Bobcats, while the losses were to the Spurs, Clippers and Magic. It’s safe to say the Mavs are in the latter of those two groups. Also, Dallas owns a 7-6 SU and 8-5 ATS mark on the road. In those six losses, four were by three points or less. I’d expect another tight affair here.

Heavy Wood

Last season, road underdogs on Friday’s were nice looks. Personally, I only bet on underdogs unless I believe they can win the game. Out of the five ‘dogs below, I honestly can’t see any of them winning outright. Covering? They’d have to play perfect and hope for the other team to come out real flat. Here’s my five cents on the below handful.

Orlando vs. Milwaukee: Stan Van Gundy and the Magic have been hot (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS), while the Bucks (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS) have been cold. Orlando has won four straight at home versus Milwaukee, three coming by 10 points or more.

Miami at Cleveland: The Heat have been an ATM machine (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) lately and they just beat the Cavaliers by 16 points (107-91) at home last week. Cleveland does own a solid 6-2 ATS ledger as a home ‘dog this season. It’s hard to fade Miami these days and I don’t consider Orlando a legit look-ahead on Sunday. I do think you could play the Kings on Tuesday against the Heat, with a surging New York team visiting Thursday before the All-Star break. Jot that down!

Oklahoma City vs. Golden State: OKC is 6-4 (60%) as a home favorite and that includes a 4-2 ATS mark as a ‘chalk’ of 9.5 points or more. If you take the points, you better hope Golden State hits close to 50 percent and I hate backing teams when you need great shooting nights. The total seems a little high at 210.

Utah vs. Washington: The Jazz shouldn’t be giving this many points and they’re playing the first home contest after a three-game road set, which is another reason not to back them. Still, Washington (3-11 SU, 5-9 ATS) is not a good team. They did just beat the Trail Blazers (124-109) on Tuesday but they shot 60 percent from the floor. They came back to earth on Wednesday to the Clippers (84-102). Again, if you back the Wiz, then you need them to shoot well. The points are too rich for me but Utah is still sound at home (11-5 SU, 10-6 ATS), especially against young clubs lacking depth.

L.A. Lakers vs. Phoenix: The Purple and Gold have been inconsistent this season but the home record (12-2 SU, 9-5 ATS) is solid. I’ll give Phoenix credit for hanging around this season at times with a serious lack of talent. The Suns lost to the Lakers (83-99) on Jan. 10 at Staples Center in a game that was closer than the 16-point margin. The point-spread on that game was 7.5 and now it’s up to 8.5 with two teams going in opposite directions.

Pass the Rock?

Me and my colleague Kevin Rogers often describe the below games as dumb bets. If you wager on one of the four teams and win, don’t consider yourself sharp and if you lose, then you’re hence the saying, dumb. Since we’ve all been dumb, here’s a quick snapshot of each battle. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so!

Charlotte at Toronto: I did take the ‘Cats on Monday at home against Philadelphia and I didn’t watch the game. I managed to be dumb and cover albeit very luckily. If you don’t know, Charlotte has dropped 16 straight and all of them have been by six points or more, 12 by double digits. Toronto is giving 6½-points tonight and they’ve gone 3-2 both SU and ATS in the ‘chalk’ role this season. Not that it matters much with new faces, but Charlotte won and covered all four meetings against Toronto last season.

Sacramento at Detroit: Again, hard to back the Kings on the road (3-14 SU, 7-10 ATS) and even tougher to give points with Detroit, who is 1-3 both SU and ATS as a favorite this season. The Pistons are on a 7-1 ATS run and off a big win at Boston (98-88) on Wednesday but why are they only giving two points? And the opener at BetOnline.com was Detroit -4, which tells you the early move too.

Tough Matchups

While the two above games feature teams that are tough to back, I can make a case for all four of these squads. The lines do present nice value on the money-line with the visiting ‘dogs too.

Minnesota at Houston: Fourth meeting of the season between these teams on Friday. Houston captured the first encounter (107-92) on Jan. 23 before Minnesota earned victories in the next two games, including a 120-108 road decision on Jan. 30. The Rockets have been tough at home (11-3 SU, 10-4 ATS) and that includes a 96-95 upset over Oklahoma City on Wednesday. The Timberwolves snapped a four-game slide on Wednesday with an easy win over Charlotte (102-90). Total players should make a note on the early steam (see above) to the ‘under’ in this matchup. Plus, Houston has been an ‘under’ (19-10) squad all year and it’s currently on an 8-1 run to the ‘under’ as well.

Denver at Memphis: The Nuggets were once the surprise of the league and they were golden to bettors too but everybody has caught up to them, the oddsmakers too. Denver has been hurt by the injury bug lately and the team has produced a 2-6 record both SU and ATS in its last eight games. Memphis has been beat up too this season and its current form (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) has been much better or late. However, the Grizzlies’ offense has been inept at times and you wonder if they have the firepower to match Denver. Memphis did rally past the Nuggets in overtime (100-97) on Jan. 31 at home, but that win was more on Denver collapsing.

Phoenix - Lakers Home-Home Series
Sportspic.com

The Phoenix Suns (12-18, 12-18 ATS) swept on its back-to-back-to-back set losing to Golden State, Denver and most recently Atlanta try to end the three-game skid Friday when they open a home-home series against Lakers (17-12, 13-16 ATS) at the Staples Center. Suns six games under .500 thanks in large part to a 21st-ranked defense (96.9) are 7-10 (8-9 ATS) on the road this season netting 92.4 per/game surrendering 97.4 on 44.4% shooting. Meanwhile, Lakers well rested after an 86-78 win over Atlanta at home on Tuesday are a strong 12-2 (9-5 ATS) on home court scoring 94.4 per contest holding opponents to a lowly 84.7 PPG on 39.5% from the floor, 30.0% from outside. Lakers won an earlier meeting 99-83 as -7.5 point favorites on this floor giving Kobe and company a sparkling 9-1 (6-4 ATS) mark the past ten encounters in Los Angeles. There is ample reason to back Lakers on Friday but Sunday could be a spot for Phoenix when the teams head to US Airways Center as Lakers have struggled mightily away from Staples Center posting a 5-10 (4-11 ATS) record averaging just 90.7 PPG while allowing host teams 95.8 per contest. Lakers are also on a 1-7-1 ATS slide on the road vs a division foe.
