Game of the Night – Pacers at Wizards
Washington and Indiana each had long winning streaks snapped this week by the top team in the Eastern Conference (and defending champion) Cleveland. The Wizards (31-21 SU, 30-22 ATS) saw their 16-game home hot streak disappear in a 140-135 overtime setback to the Cavaliers on Monday. Washington also had its seven-game winning streak end that night, but the Wizards needed overtime in Wednesday’s 114-110 triumph at Brooklyn as 10-point road favorites.
The Pacers (29-23 SU, 23-28-1 ATS) had won seven in a row prior to Wednesday’s 132-117 home defeat to the Cavaliers, the fourth time this season Indiana has allowed at least 130 points in a game. To prove how much the defense struggled on Wednesday, Nate McMillan’s squad yielded 97 points or less in each of the previous four games, resulting in four easy UNDERS. The Pacers have stumbled on the highway this season by compiling a 9-15 record, but Indiana has won three straight away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The Wizards and Pacers are hooking up for the third time in the regular season with the final meeting coming next Thursday in Indianapolis. The home team has won each of the first two matchups as the Pacers held off the Wizards, 107-105 as 5½-point favorites on December 19. Washington exacted revenge nine days later at the Verizon Center in a 111-105 triumph as four-point favorites.
Scott Brooks’ team has put together a splendid 15-3 ATS mark in the last 18 games in D.C., while Indiana has cashed in three of the past four opportunities as a road underdog.
Memphis Bleak
Only one team has defeated the Warriors twice this season and it’s the Memphis Grizzlies. Golden State heads to FedEx Forum for the first of a tough back-to-back set that continues to Oklahoma City on Saturday night for Kevin Durant’s return. First, the Warriors look to capitalize off Wednesday’s 31-point blowout of the Bulls as Golden State knocked down 15 three-pointers.
Memphis routed Golden State, 110-89 as 13-point home underdogs in December, while the Grizzlies erased a 24-point deficit in a 128-119 overtime shocker over the Warriors at Oracle Arena last month. The Grizzlies have won six of seven to pull into tie for fifth place in the Western Conference playoff race, while covering in each of those victories. Memphis has held its past eight opponents to below 100 points in its last eight wins, but owns a 1-3 ATS record in its last four in the home underdog role.
Kings for a Night
Sacramento stepped up without its top player on Wednesday as DeMarcus Cousins sat out a 108-92 blowout of Boston as 8½-point underdogs. The Kings go for back-to-back home wins for the first time since November as the Hawks invade Golden 1 Center. Cousins is back from his one-game suspension, but the Kings have stumbled to a 3-9 SU and 4-8 ATS mark in the last 12 home contests.
Atlanta embarks on a short three-game road trip that continues to Portland and Los Angeles as the Hawks have won seven of their past nine away from Philips Arena. The Hawks have captured nine of the previous 10 meetings with the Kings, including a 106-95 home victory on Halloween as seven-point favorites.
Churning Pistons
Detroit is holding onto the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after winning four of its past five contests. The Pistons seek their fifth straight home victory tonight, but it won’t be easy against the Southwest division-leading Spurs. Stan Van Gundy’s squad has topped the 113-point mark in each of its previous four contests at the Palace of Auburn Hills, even though all four of those wins came against below .500 teams.
The Spurs rebounded from one of their worst offensive performances of the season at Memphis to outlast Philadelphia on Wednesday, 111-103. San Antonio has posted a 3-5 ATS record in its last eight opportunities as a road favorite, but has picked up double-digit victories in its last two visits to Detroit.
Keep the Streak Alive
The Heat lost last a game on January 13 in Milwaukee. Miami has rolled to 12 consecutive victories since that setback, including a 106-88 blowout of the Bucks on Wednesday as short underdogs. Erik Spoelstra’s club shoots for its 13th straight win tonight in Brooklyn, as two victories in this streak have come against the Nets.
Miami’s offense has come alive during this hot stretch by eclipsing the 100-point mark 11 times, while rallying from an 18-point fourth quarter deficit in a 109-106 triumph at Barclays Center last month. The Nets are seeking their 10th victory on the season as Brooklyn has dropped 11 straight games, but is coming off consecutive covers as a double-digit ‘dog in losses to Charlotte and Washington.
Melo Matchup
The Knicks continue to spiral out of control following Wednesday’s late meltdown in a home loss to the Clippers. New York has dropped five of its past six games, including three straight defeats at Madison Square Garden as the Nuggets invade Manhattan this evening. The Knicks have topped the OVER in six of the past seven home contests, but has cashed in only one of the last five opportunities as a home favorite.
Carmelo Anthony has been the subject of trade rumors as the Knicks’ star faces the team that drafted him out of Syracuse back in 2003. The Nuggets continue a three-game road swing after falling at Atlanta on Wednesday, 117-106, the third straight road defeat for Denver. This series has been owned recently by the Nuggets, who have captured four consecutive meetings with the Knicks, including a 127-114 triumph at Pepsi Center in December.
Head-to-Head Trends
The Lakers visit Milwaukee as the home team has ruled this series recently by winning the last five matchups. Los Angeles has covered four straight meetings in the underdog role, while cashing in six of the past seven games overall. The Bucks have stumbled to a 2-11 SU/ATS record in the last 13 contests, as forward Jabari Parker is done for the season after tearing his ACL on Wednesday.
New Orleans and Minnesota split four matchups last season, as the Pelicans crushed the Wolves in the first meeting this season, 117-96 in November. Each of the past five meetings have finished OVER the total, as New Orleans tries to snap a five-game road skid at Target Center.
The Bulls embark on the fifth game of their six-game road swing in Phoenix, as Chicago hopes to get its top two players back tonight. Both Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade sat out Wednesday’s blowout loss at Golden State as the Bulls own a 7-3 record in the last 10 matchups with the Suns. Phoenix is riding an eight-game skid at Talking Stick Resort Arena, while covering only three times in this cold stretch.
Friday’s NBA Game of the Day: Pacers at Wizards
By Covers.com
Indiana Pacers at Washington Wizards (-5, 214.5)
Two teams surging up the standings in the Eastern Conference square off when the Indiana Pacers visit the Washington Wizards on Friday. The Wizards had a 17-game home winning streak come to an end on Monday but bounced back with an overtime win at Brooklyn on Wednesday while the Pacers' seven-game winning streak was coming to an end in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Washington battled into overtime in one of the best games of the NBA season but was denied an 18th consecutive home win in Monday's 140-135 loss to the Cavaliers and had to fight off a bit of a hangover from that outing before putting away the Nets 114-110. "We were trying to find a rhythm," Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters after Wednesday's triumph. "Some parts of the game looked good and some parts of the game we’re going to push fast forward on our film tonight and try to keep finding the good things we can do." The Pacers led Cleveland at halftime on Wednesday but completely fell off the pace after the break and ended up falling 132-117. "It's one game," star forward Paul George told reporters. "We look past this. We played a really good team tonight. We know what beat us and we know the reason why we lost tonight. ... If we're serious about where we want to get to, then we'll respond Friday."
LINE HISTORY: The Wizards opened as 5-point home favorites and the total hit the board at 214.5. As of Friday morning there had been no movement to either number. Check out the complete line history here.

The Pacers were outscored 40-18 in the decisive third quarter and allowed Cavaliers sharpshooter Kyle Korver to go 8-of-9 from 3-point range in the loss. "At the start of the third quarter, you can't come out not focused and ready to go as we did," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "You've got to be calm in games like this. We got rattled. ... It was a good lesson for us. We should learn from this."
ABOUT THE WIZARDS (31-21 SU, 30-22 ATS, 32-20 O/U): One of Washington's 17 straight home wins came over Indiana, a 111-105 on Dec. 28 that pulled the team within a game of .500 at 15-16. The Wizards are now third in the Eastern Conference behind Cleveland and Boston and are getting star-level performances from shooting guard Bradley Beal, who followed up a 41-point effort on Monday with 31 points in 41 minutes at Brooklyn. The 23-year-old did not play more than 73 games in any of his first four seasons and was limited to 55 last season but only missed four games so far this season and is logging heavy minutes (39.3 in the first four games this month) along with backcourt mate John Wall (42.3 minutes in February).
