NBA Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's Picks and Analysis
Covers.com

Day 3 of the new pro hoops season is upon us and we’re feeling wicked smart after our 2-0 picks from yesterday. We try to ride the hot hand and send you into the weekend with a couple more winners.

Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets (-6, 202.5)

Point guard depth is a problem for the Hornets. Charlotte signed Michael Carter-Williams to be the main backup ball handler but an offseason procedure on his knee limited his work during training camp.

The Hornets could normally get by with wing Nic Batum bringing the ball up when Kemba Walker needs a breather, but Batum tore a ligament in his non-shooting elbow in a preseason game and will be out for at least a couple months.

The situation forced head coach Steve Clifford into giving the backup point guard minutes to rookie Malik Monk – a great shooter who played 2-guard at Kentucky. The Hornets predictably turned the ball over 17 times against the Pistons and lost 102-90 as 3-point road dogs.

Pick: Hawks +6

Cleveland Cavaliers at Milwaukee Bucks (+2.5, 210)

The year to fear the deer is here. Milwaukee All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo exploded for 37 points on just 22 shot attempts Wednesday night against the Celtics. The Bucks left Boston with a 108-100 win and headed home to prepare for the other monster in the Eastern Conference.

Head coach Jason Kidd has a reputation for over tinkering with his lineups and rotations but that doesn’t look like it will be a problem this season. The starting five makes sense and big man Greg Monroe looks comfortable in his role as a go-to scorer in the second unit.

Pick: Bucks +2.5

Yesterday’s picks: 2-0
Season record: 3-3

Total Streaks

*The Over is 10-3 in the Hornets’ last 13 games.
*The Over is 6-1-1 in the Magic’s last eight games.
*The Under is 6-0 in the Lakers’ last six games.

Injury To Note

There are a couple injuries to point out for the Magic-Nets game tonight. Orlando forward Aaron Gordon is questionable with sore left ankle. He played 34 minutes in the Magic’s Wednesday win over the Heat and registered 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

The Nets lost starting guard Jeremy Lin for the season after he ruptured his patella tendon his in knee. We mentioned on Wednesday’s Pick ‘n’ Roll how important Lin was to Brooklyn’s ATS success last season. The Nets went 24-11-1 against the spread with Lin in the lineup last year and 17-27-2 without him.

Top Trends

*The Pistons are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against the Wizards.
*The Jazz are 7-0 ATS in their last seven road games.
*The Pacers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games.
*The Lakers are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 games at Phoenix.

Consensus

About 74 percent of Consensus players expect the Golden State Warriors to cover as 8.5-point chalk at New Orleans. The Dubs are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as road faves but just 2-5 ATS in their last seven trips to the Big Easy.
