Dallas at Toronto

Raptors taken behind the woodshed spanked 104-89 in South Beach Saturday night return to the comfort of Air Canada Centre hardwood where they'll host the Dallas Mavericks. Currently, oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag have Raptors 4-point home favorites.

Raptors have had good success on home court going 21-11 (17-14-1 ATS) netting 113.9 in offensive efficiency metrics while allowing 105.0 per opponent 100 possesions. On the other side, the road has not been kind for Mavericks as they're just 8-22 (14-16 ATS) on the campaign dropping 101.8 per 100 possesions while giving up 108.9 in defensive efficiency metrics.

Despite Home/Road splits, the huge discrepency in offense - defense metrics you bet Raptors at some risk. Purple Dinos have not responded against the betting line at home recently after a loss (1-5 ATS), have faltered against the spread after running the hardwood vs Heat (2-6 ATS) and have been poor bets facing Mavericks (1-3 ATS).

Monday's NBA Essentials
By Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Atlanta at San Antonio

Dire circumstances helped make the NBA an easy target over the weekend when one of the most anticipated games on the league's schedule was foiled by injuries and a desire to rest players. San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard found himself stuck dealing with the league's concussion protocol, while Saturday morning brought news that LaMarcus Aldridge was suffering through a heart issue that would keep him out indefinitely.

Despite the absence of their top two scorers, the Spurs not only ended up a double-digit favorite over a Golden State team playing without its best five, they won by 22. Back when they won a title they followed up with a 73-win regular season, the Warriors adopted "Strength in Numbers" as the team motto. They had t-shirts made up that were worn as warm-ups. Fans held up signs. From MVP Steph Curry to the last guy on the bench, everyone mattered.

Making moves to incorporate Kevin Durant eradicated that dynamic, which is ironic since it can now be most associated with the Spurs, who enter the week just one-half game behind Golden State for the best record in the league. San Antonio is 9-1 in its last 10 and has reached this point, about 80 percent into the regular-season, as the favorite to overtake the Warriors for the NBA's top record and the homecort advantage it carries with it. Only Golden State has a better home winning percentage than the Spurs have managed at the AT&T Center, where they've won 80 percent of their games thus far entering tonight's date with Atlanta.

Although Aldridge is dealing what is being termed a "minor ailment," a statement that sounds like an oxymoron considering we're talking about his heart, he's expected back despite the uncertainty. The issue is an arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat that will require monitoring, so there's no telling how long he'll be out. There won't be any rushing back. These are, after all, the Spurs we're talking about. They excercise caution when dealing with an ingrown toenail, so they'll know for sure that Aldridge will be fine before he's back in the mix. Fortunately, since Pau Gasol was coming off the bench after returning from a broken hand, he's available to step in, although David Lee, who worked his way into the rotation while Gasol was out, could also get the nod. Dewayne Dedmon will continue to start at center.

See, strength in numbers.

Head coach Gregg Popovich expressed hope that Leonard who be able to return for Monday's game against the Hawks, but concussion protocol is a different animal and he'll be cleared when ready. He sounds close though, so the Spurs should have him back sooner than later to lead the way at both ends of the floor. Leonard's well-rounded excellence has him in the MVP race, as his first four games this month saw him 33.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.3 steals, culminating with a head-to-head takedown of James Harden's Rockets. Kyle Anderson has started at small forward in his absence.

Although Tim Duncan has retired and Leonard largely leads through his play instead of vocally, the Spurs still have Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili as anchors, an advantage that should become obvious over the next month. With Duncan and Kobe Bryant out of the league, Parker and Ginobili, both now well past their prime, have won the most titles ahead of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and James Jones, joining Wade as the only active guys to do so over two different decades. Although neither is still consistently great, they still show flashes of brilliance and can take over for short stretches. On a team that lacks many outgoing personalities, they're the vocal leaders too. It will be interesting to see how they react in this one, knowing they're in for a challenge against former longtime assistant Mike Budenholzer, once one of Pop's most trusted advisors.

Bud's Hawks arrive in San Antonio on a three-game winning streak that has moved them one-half game behind Toronto for the fourth-best record in the East. Atlanta crushed Memphis 107-90 on Saturday and return home for a rematch against the Grizzlies on Thursday following this one. The Hawks beat the Spurs 114-112 on Jan. 1 despite Aldridge and Parker combining for 49 points. Neither will play tonight, as Parker has been ruled out due to a back issue.

Paul Millsap scored 32 points in that New Year's Day game, while Tim Hardaway, Jr., now in the starting lineup, won it by shooting 11-for-13 from the field, making 6-of-7 3-pointers. If Leonard isn't cleared to help stop Millsap, the Spurs shouldn't be favored despite their dominant record at home. Fortunately, the schedule is on their side, since seven of their next nine will be played in San Antonio and only one back-to-back situation arises. The Warriors must come back through town on March 29, which means Kevin Durant won't be back to partake in the festivities.

Regardless of what transpires against Atlanta tonight and how long it takes for Aldridge to safely return, San Antonio has moved into the driver's seat to claim homecourt in the West, which helps improve its hopes for a sixth NBA championship in 19 seasons.

Injury Concerns

Point guard Kyle Lowry will have his wrist re-evaluated this week but still isn't likely to return until late in the month at the earliest, so a Raptors team that is 2-4 in March must find a way to stay afloat with Boston pulling away in the Atlantic and the Hawks closing hard for homecourt advantage in a possible first-round series. DeMarre Carroll, who had finally managed to stay healthy for the first time since joining the Raptors as a prized free-agent acquisition in 2015, is dealing with a sore ankle and may not play as Toronto hosts Dallas on Monday. The Mavs have their own major concern since has missed consecutive games with a sore left knee after hitting the ground runing as the team's starting center upon his arrival.

Rudy Gobert missed his first game of the season in Saturday's 112-104 loss in Oklahoma City, sitting due to leg soreness after catching a knee from Houston's James Harden on Thursday. Not coincidentally, the Jazz surrendered their third-hightest scoring output of the season despite getting point guard George Hill bak to help slow Russell Westbrook. Gobert, one of the frontrunners for Defensive Player of the Year honors, will likely be a game-time decision agaisnt the Clippers in a huge game in the Western Conference. Entering Monday's action, the Jazz would be the No. 4 seed and would host fifth-seeded L.A. in Game 1 of a playoff series, but their lead is just a single game, which means that could flip-flop since the NBA has eliminated the mandate that a division winner must be locked in to a top-four seed.

Starting power forward Derrick Favors has been ruled out due to a bone contusion on his left knee and will be re-evaluated later this week. Hill, who had been dealing with a toe injury, had a flat performance in his return this weekend, while backup Shelvin Mack has been ruled out with a badly sprained ankle.

The Jazz hit the road for a four-game trip against Central Division competition beginning Wednesday and will see the Clippers in L.A. on March 25. If they can't overcome their injuries, they risk losing homecourt advantage and could wind up getting caught by OKC for the Northwest Division title.

The Lakers reached a new low in their season-long tank on Sunday night, losing at Staples Center to Philadelphia 118-116 when T.J. McConnell helped complete a comeback in the game's final minute with a go-ahead jumper. The 76ers therefore swept the Lakers this season, which won't hurt L.A.'s hopes of holding on to their 2016 draft pick, which otherwise goes to Philly if not among the top three. The Lakers will play in Denver for the first time this season and are undergoing a youth movement with rookie Brandon Ingram in the starting lineup and recently acquired young pieces Tyler Ennis and David Nwaba getting long looks. That has to be music to Denver's ears, since the Nuggets have a tenuous hold on the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, entering the week up 1.5 games on Portland and 2.5 on Dallas. Key forwards Wilson Chandler (groin) and Danilo Gallinari (illness, hamstring) haven't been 100 percent lately, but are expected to play. Starting point guard Jameer Nelson is hampered by a hip issue and is questionable, while backup forward Kenneth Faried remains sidelined with a back injury.
