Tuesday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Favorites won seven of 11 games on Monday night in the NBA, but underdogs compiled a 7-4 ATS record, including outright wins by the Cavaliers, Thunder, Grizzlies, and Blazers. The favorite/over combination hit in the two late games as the Warriors and Jazz each covered in high-scoring victories, while the OVER cashed in seven contests.

Game of the Night – Bulls at Pistons (-6, 200)

These two old rivals from the early 90’s are meeting for the first time this season as both teams are coming off losses in their last game. Chicago (11-9 SU, 12-8 ATS) fell short to Portland on Monday, 112-110 as four-point home favorites to suffer its second consecutive defeat since knocking off Cleveland last Friday. Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 34 points for Chicago as the Bulls played without point guard Rajon Rondo, who was serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Since covering six consecutive games in mid-November, the Bulls have gone backwards from an ATS standpoint by posting a 2-4 ATS mark the last six contests. However, Fred Hoiberg’s club has cashed six straight times in the role of an underdog, including four outright victories as a road ‘dog.

The Pistons (11-11 SU, 11-11 ATS) had their three-game winning streak snapped in Sunday’s 98-92 home defeat to the Magic. In the last 10 games, 100 is the magic number for Stan Van Gundy’s squad. When Detroit scores 100 points or more, the Pistons are 5-0. When they are held to 100 points or less, they have lost all five times. Detroit completed a 3-1 road trip prior to the Orlando loss, which included victories over Charlotte, Boston, and Atlanta, all playoff teams from last season.

Detroit has won seven of 10 games at the Palace of Auburn Hills, while holding all 10 opponents to less than 100 points as the UNDER is 8-2. Last season, the Pistons captured three of four meetings from the Bulls with all three wins coming by four points or less. In all three victories, Detroit was listed as an underdog, but closed as a favorite in the lone loss to Chicago at home this past January.

Back-to-back action

Five other teams besides the Bulls are playing with no rest tonight as the Wizards, Grizzlies, 76ers, Spurs, and Jazz are taking the court on the second of a back-to-back.

Magic at Wizards (-3½, 198)

These two Southeast division rivals have split a pair of matchups in Orlando this season as they meet for the first time at the Verizon Center. Both meetings were decided by three points or less as the Wizards held off the Magic, 94-91 back on November 25 as two-point favorites. Washington has captured nine of the past 10 matchups with Orlando since the start of the 2014-15 season, including a 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS mark at home.

The Wizards closed out a three-game road swing with a 118-113 victory at Brooklyn last night as 6½-point favorites to pick up just the second away win of the season. Washington has lost three of four games with no rest this season, including a recent home defeat to San Antonio. Orlando closes out a five-game road swing tonight looking for a 4-1 mark after beating Philadelphia and Detroit in the last two games.

76ers at Grizzlies (-8, 194)

Philadelphia suffered its seventh consecutive loss in last night’s 106-98 defeat to Denver as the 76ers embark on a three-game road swing. The 76ers have yet to win an away contest this season (0-6 SU, 1-5 ATS), while owning an 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS mark with no rest.

The Grizzlies outlasted the Pelicans in two overtimes on Monday night, 110-108 to cash as 4½-point underdogs, as Memphis improved to 3-1 without point guard Mike Conley. Memphis has compiled a perfect 5-0 SU/ATS record with no rest this season, as four of those victories came at FedEx Forum.

Spurs (-4½, 205½) at Timberwolves

San Antonio edged Milwaukee on Monday night, 97-96 to improve to an impressive 12-0 on the road this season. The Spurs have won four of five times on the second of a back-to-back set this season, but San Antonio has failed to cover in each of its four contests overall. San Antonio has captured each of the seven matchups with the Wolves since the start of the 2014-15 season, including four double-digit victories at Target Center.

Minnesota snapped a four-game skid in Saturday’s overtime triumph at Charlotte, as the Wolves erased a late seven-point deficit in regulation. The Wolves have struggled in Tom Thibodeau’s first season as head coach at 6-14 SU and 7-13 ATS, while dropping three straight games at home.

Suns at Jazz (-7, 203)

Utah swept the four-game series from Phoenix last season, including a pair of blowout wins in Salt Lake City. The Jazz return home after beating the Lakers on Monday, 107-101 as 4½-point road favorites to win for the sixth time in seven games. Utah has fared well without rest by going 4-1 SU/ATS in this situation with two of those victories coming at home.

Phoenix sits in last place of the Pacific division at 6-14, while dropping nine of 12 games away from the Valley. The Suns lost to the Warriors for the third time this season in Saturday’s 138-109 setback in Oakland, as Phoenix fell to 2-7 and 5-4 ATS in the previous nine road contests.

Don’t Forget Us

The only game tonight involving rested teams takes place in Miami between the Knicks and Heat. Miami returns home from a 2-1 road swing, capped off by a seven-point loss at Portland on Saturday. The Heat have dropped two straight at home to the Celtics and Spurs, but Miami has compiled a 2-1 SU/ATS record as a home favorite this season.

The Knicks are listed as 1½-point road underdogs tonight at American Airlines Arena as New York owns a 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS record away from Madison Square Garden. New York has won three consecutive games as the Knicks hope to avoid a look-ahead spot when the Cavaliers travel to the Big Apple on Wednesday.

Sizzling Spurs face Timberwolves Tuesday night
By: Zach Cohen
StatFox,com

The Spurs will be going for their fourth straight win when they face the Timberwolves in Minnesota on Tuesday.

San Antonio is coming off of a tough road victory over Milwaukee, as the Spurs escaped with a 97-96 win. They have now won three straight games and 12 of their past 13 coming into this one, and they’ll certainly be feeling good about their chances to pick up a fourth straight. San Antonio was a dominant home team a year ago, but the Spurs are actually 11-0 SU and 8-2 ATS when playing on the road this season. The Timberwolves, meanwhile, are a lousy home team, as they are just 3-6 both SU and ATS when playing in Minnesota on the year. The Timberwolves are, however, coming off of a big 125-100 victory over the Hornets on Saturday. Minnesota was a six-point underdog in that game and the team badly needed a win. It was especially important for the Timberwolves to win that one because they know that it’s going to be very difficult to earn a victory on Tuesday. San Antonio has absolutely dominated this head-to-head series in recent years, as the Spurs have won seven straight games against the Timberwolves SU. They also happened to have covered in six of those contests. The trends in this game are yet another thing that favors San Antonio as Minnesota is just 4-14 ATS in home games after one or more consecutive wins over the past three seasons. It’s worth noting, though, that the Spurs could opt to rest their players after playing a night before.

The Spurs are playing well right now and SF Kawhi Leonard (24.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 2.1 SPG) is playing like an MVP this season. Not only is Leonard still the best defender in basketball, but he is also putting up a career high in points per game. He has done that efficiently as well, as Leonard is shooting 45.0% from the floor and 37.7% from the outside this season. It’d also be fair to say that he is struggling from behind the arc, so look for him to get back to the 40% mark in the near future. This game is going to need to be one of his better efforts, though. The Spurs like to rest their starters on the second night of back-to-backs, but Leonard seems to always be out there. He’ll need to be ready to go on both ends of the floor, as his matchup with Wiggins will go a long way in determining the winner of this contest. Two other guys that’ll almost certainly be out there are SG Danny Green (7.5 PPG) and C Dewayne Dedmon (4.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.4 BPG). Green is a three-and-D wing that’ll be crucial in a game against this young, up-tempo Wolves team. Dedmon, meanwhile, is emerging as one of Gregg Popovich’s favorite players in the frontcourt. If PF LaMarcus Aldridge (17.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.0 BPG) and C Pau Gasol (11.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.2 BPG) are rested then Dedmon will have a big role in this one. He is similar to DeAndre Jordan in that he won’t do anything out of his comfort zone offensively, but he is going to defend the rim and clean the glass.

The Wolves snapped their losing streak with a win over the Hornets on Saturday and SF Andrew Wiggins (22.8 PPG) came up big in that game. Wiggins finished that one with 29 points, four assists and three steals on 11-of-20 shooting from the field. He had not been playing well heading into that game so it was big for this Minnesota team to get him going. Wiggins is crucial to this team and he’ll need to find a way to stay effective in his matchup with Leonard on Tuesday. PF Karl-Anthony Towns (22.6 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.5 BPG) is, however, the most important player for the Timberwolves. Towns has emerged as a true superstar in his second season in the league and he is now averaging 26.2 PPG, 12.4 RPG and 2.0 BPG over the past five contests. Look for him to stay hot with a big performance against the Spurs, as San Antonio really does not have anybody that can match his blend of size and skill. SG Zach LaVine (19.8 PPG) is, however, the x-factor in this one. LaVine is averaging 23.2 PPG over the past five games for Minnesota and the Wolves will need him to keep scoring moving forward. LaVine does need to defend better, though. He has been lousy on that end and can’t afford to be against this potent Spurs offense.
