Wednesday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night – Jazz at Pistons

Utah (42-25 SU, 30-35-2 ATS) begins a crucial four-game road swing against Central division opponents as the Jazz travel to the Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday. The Jazz remained in the fourth spot in the Western Conference playoff race after outlasting the Clippers on Monday, 114-108 as two-point home favorites. Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 27 points, while Utah knocked 14-of-21 shots from three-point range. Utah has cashed the OVER in five of the past six games, including four straight away from Salt Lake City.

The Pistons (33-33 SU, 33-33 ATS) return home with no rest following Tuesday’s blowout loss at Cleveland. Stan Van Gundy’s squad has won 10 of its past 12 games at the Palace, including four straight home games. Detroit has won and covered nine consecutive home contests in the role of a favorite, but have dropped two of their last three as a home underdog. However, the Pistons have struggled with no rest this season by compiling a 3-9 SU/ATS record, but seven of those losses have come on the road.

The Jazz crushed the Pistons in their last matchup in mid-January, 110-77 as 11-point home favorites. Amazingly, Utah scored only 14 points in the opening quarter, but Quin Snyder’s team posted 96 points in the final three periods to beat Detroit, who was playing on the second of a back-to-back after losing at Golden State the previous night. Each of the past four meetings between the Jazz and Pistons have finished UNDER the total, as Detroit has scored 96 points or less in five straight matchups with Utah.

Back at Home

The Wizards couldn’t pull out a perfect 5-0 road trip as Washington fell short at Minnesota on Monday, 119-104. However, Washington is sitting in the third position in the Eastern Conference playoff race after winning 25 of its last 32 games as the Wizards return to the Verizon Center to face the Mavericks. Scott Brooks’ club has split its last four home games following an incredible 19-1 run in D.C. from December through early February.

Dallas has been a disaster away from the American Airlines Center this season by posting a 7-23 road record, coming off Monday’s 100-78 defeat at Toronto. The Mavericks have been limited to 95 points or less in five straight road games, losing all five times, while covering just once. Dallas goes for the season sweep of Washington after beating the Wizards at home in January, 113-105, in spite of the dynamic duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal combining for 52 points in the loss.

No Luck Needed

The Celtics rebounded nicely from a 20-point defeat at Denver to close out their recent road trip as Boston blew out Chicago on Sunday, 100-80. Boston improved to 9-1 in the last 10 games at TD Garden, while covering for only the fourth time in this span at home. The C’s host the Timberwolves, a team Boston has beaten 10 straight times at home since January 2006, while cashing in each of the past four home victories.

Minnesota has suddenly won seven of its past 10 contests after Monday’s victory over Washington, as the Wolves moved to 9-1 ATS in this stretch. On the road, the Wolves own a 5-1 ATS mark since the All-Star break, including a 27-point victory at Utah on March 1. Minnesota looks to avenge a 99-93 home defeat to Boston in November as the Celtics outscored the Wolves in the fourth quarter, 31-12.

Struggling Squads

Both the Bulls and Grizzlies ended their respective losing streaks on Monday night with victories as the teams hook up at the United Center. Chicago snapped a five-game slide by holding off Charlotte, 115-109 as 7½-point road underdogs. Memphis also put a halt to a five-game skid in a 113-93 blowout of streaking Milwaukee, while ending a three-game home slide.

The Bulls have dropped three of their past four games at the United Center with all three losses coming by 10 points or more. Memphis has struggled on the road since the All-Star break by losing three of the previous four away from FedEx Forum with the lone victory coming at Denver on February 26. In the first meeting this season in Memphis, the Bulls held off the Grizzlies, 108-104 as 8 ½-point underdogs in mid-January.

Buck Bounce-Back

Milwaukee’s six-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt in Monday’s 113-93 defeat at Memphis. The Bucks continue their six-game west coast swing at Staples Center at Los Angeles to face the Clippers for the second time in less than two weeks. Milwaukee jumped out to a 19-point halftime lead over L.A. in a 112-101 home triumph as 5½-point underdogs on March 3. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greg Monroe each scored 24 points as the Bucks shot 55% from the field to beat the Clippers for only the second time in the last 10 matchups.

The Clippers dropped to 5-6 since the All-Star break following Monday’s 114-108 setback at Utah as two-point underdogs. Los Angeles has put together a 1-4 ATS home record in the last five games at Staples Center, but the Clippers have won eight consecutive home meetings with the Bucks since 2009.

Bumbling Blazers

Portland slipped to 12-23 on the road after getting blown out at New Orleans on Tuesday, 100-77. The Blazers entered Tuesday with victories in five of their previous six games, but Portland was limited to 30% shooting from the floor at New Orleans. Portland heads to San Antonio with double-revenge after losing twice to the Spurs by double-digits back in December. The Blazers own a 5-6 SU/ATS record with no rest, but Terry Stotts’ club has won and covered four straight times on the second end of a back-to-back.

The Spurs have won 11 of their last 12 games, while riding a nine-game winning streak at the AT&T Center. San Antonio held off Atlanta on Monday, 107-99 to cash as seven-point favorites, led by Kawhi Leonard’s 31 points. In the last meeting with the Blazers on December 30, the Spurs overcame an early 10-point deficit to blast Portland, 110-94 as 10-point favorites in spite of Leonard missing that victory due to injury.

Head-to-Head Trends

The Hornets and Pacers meet for the final time in the regular season as the home team has won the first three matchups. Charlotte blew out Indiana, 100-88 at home last week, as the squads hook up in Indianapolis, where the Pacers have won three straight. Indiana has been terrible with no rest, owning a 3-11 SU and 2-11-1 ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back after losing at New York on Tuesday.

The Heat have put together a remarkable 21-5 SU and 21-4-1 ATS record the last 26 games as Miami hosts New Orleans. The Pelicans beat the Heat at home in late December, the fourth victory over Miami in the last six meetings since March 2014.

The Lakers shocked the Rockets in the season opener at Staples Center, but Houston chased Los Angeles in its next meeting in December, 134-95. The teams meet in Houston on Wednesday as the Lakers have compiled a putrid 1-10 SU and 1-9-1 ATS record the last 11 games. Since December 2010, the Rockets own an 8-2 SU/ATS mark against the Lakers at Toyota Center.

The road team has won each of the first two matchups between the Suns and Kings this season as Phoenix knocked off Sacramento at the buzzer on February 3. Sacramento snapped an eight-game skid in Monday’s victory over Orlando, while Phoenix has lost three consecutive contests at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
