Mavs, Clippers meet Wednesday
By: Sam Chase
StatFox.com

The Mavs are off to the worst start of any team in the league.

In a Western Conference that is even more crowded than ever before this season, few expected the Dallas Mavericks to be in contention for a playoff spot. Then again, few thought they would be as bad as they have been to start the year. The Mavs are 1-7 and 2-6 against the spread in the early going. After getting its first win in a victory over Memphis, Dallas has lost three straight: the road leg of a home-and-home against the Grizzlies, a tightly contested home game to Philadelphia and a 15-point road defeat to Utah. The downtrodden Mavs will try to buck up for a national TV game on Wednesday night, when they'll remain on the road for a 10:30 pm ET matchup with the Clippers. Los Angeles started the year 4-0, but dropped two consecutive home contests to Detroit and Golden State to fall to 4-2 (4-2 ATS). The Warriors loss was a blowout at a final score of 141-113, and it was the Clippers' 11th consecutive loss in the series between the two teams. Last year, these two teams split their four regular season contests.

For a second consecutive season, SF Harrison Barnes is leading the Mavericks in scoring. At 16.6 PPG, though, that's not saying a whole lot, and his 12.1 PER certainly doesn't paint him in a flattering light. He had his best game of the year in the near-win against Philly, scoring 25 points on 17 shots. It's also probably not a good sign for the team that 33-year-old backup PG J.J. Barea is second on the team in scoring at 13.6 PPG. Offering hope for the future is rookie PG Dennis Smith Jr., who has started in all six of the game's he's played. He's had to sit out two games with swelling in his knee, something that could possibly be of concern going forward. He led the way for the Mavs in their lone win this season, scoring 19 points and dishing out five assists in the victory over Memphis. PF Dirk Nowitzki is far from the player he once was at an average of 11.1 PPG, but he was Dallas's leading scorer against Utah on Monday night with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The team retained C Nerlens Noel through some awkward contract negotiations in the offseason, and he's still yet to live up to the hype that made him a high draft pick several years ago. The team is still waiting for the return of PG Seth Curry, who remains out for likely another two weeks with an injury. It's unclear how his arrival in the lineup will impact Smith's playing time.

With the offense running through him instead of departed PG Chris Paul, PG Blake Griffin has shown a return to the form that had him on the outskirts of the MVP conversation several seasons ago. One of the highlights of the early NBA season came last Thursday, when he capped off a 25-point, eight-rebound, five-assist night with a three-pointer at the buzzer to take down Portland 104-103 to keep the Clippers undefeated. He's been quieter in their two losses since, though, and was especially ineffective against Golden State, scoring 16 points on 10 shots and managing only three rebounds. His +/- of -23 was also second worst on the team in that game. No one else was worse than -17 except for sixth man SG Lou Williams, who posted an ugly -31. Williams managed 17 points by earning 11 free throw attempts, and SF Danilo Gallinari led the team in scoring on the night with 19 points. Gallo and Lou Will are averaging 14.2 and 13.2 PPG, respectively, thus far in their early days as Clippers. Newly added PG Patrick Beverley is putting up 13.3 PPG, making three of the top four scorers in Los Angeles players who were not on the roster last season. C DeAndre Jordan is averaging only 9.2 PPG, which would be his lowest total since the 2012-13 season. His .524 FG% would easily be the lowest of his career—last season he posted a career high of .714. He is still ruthless on the boards, though, averaging 16.3 RPG.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Game of the Night: Blazers at Jazz

Utah (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) continues its four-game homestand following 15-point triumphs over the Lakers and Mavericks. The Jazz owns a perfect 4-0 SU/ATS record at home, while limiting each of their opponents to 96 points or less. In Monday’s 104-89 victory over the Mavs, Utah erased a nine-point halftime deficit by outscoring Dallas 60-36 in the second half to cash as 8 ½-point favorites. The starting backcourt duo of Ricky Rubio and Rodney Hood combined to score 45 points, while knocking down nine three-pointers.

Portland (4-3 SU, 3-3-1 ATS) is playing the only road contest in an 11-game stretch following a 2-2 homestand. The Blazers were tied with the Raptors at 29-29 after one quarter on Monday night before the lid was placed on Portland’s rim. Amazingly, the Blazers scored only six points in the second quarter, while their only field goal came from Evan Turner with five seconds remaining in the half. Terry Stotts’ squad was held below 100 points for the first time this season, while failing to cover in the last three games.

The home team captured all four matchups between these Northwest division squads last season, including a pair of blowouts by the Jazz in Salt Lake City. In the last eight matchups dating back to New Year’s Eve 2015, the team with the home court advantage has come out on top, including three consecutive victories at Vivint Smart Home Arena by the Jazz.

Quicken Change

It’s early in the season, but the Cavaliers had an October to forget after going 3-4. It wasn’t too bad following a 3-1 start, as three consecutive losses to the Nets, Pelicans, and Knicks have dropped Cleveland to below .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2014. Cleveland’s Sunday night setback to New York was the low point, falling to the Knicks as 10 ½-point favorites, 114-95, while the Cavaliers shot 38% from the floor.

Cleveland (3-4 SU, 1-6 ATS) hosts Indiana for the first time since sweeping the Pacers in the opening round of the playoffs last season. The Cavaliers have won seven straight meetings with Indiana, but the Pacers have covered in their last three trips to Quicken Loans Arena. Indiana (3-3 SU, 4-2 ATS) plays with no rest following Tuesday’s home victory over Sacramento as the Pacers are 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS this season on the second end of a back-to-back.

Magic Men

Of course Golden State is the top-scoring offense in the NBA, but right behind them is Orlando? The Magic (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) are averaging nearly 117 points per game through seven contests, while coming off their fourth outright victory in the underdog role. Orlando followed up a seven-point loss on Sunday at Charlotte by pulling away from New Orleans in the second half of a 115-99 triumph on Monday as 7 ½-point underdogs. The Magic have yet to cover back-to-back games, as they will look to accomplish that feat for the first time at Memphis.

The Grizzlies (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) suffered their first home loss of the season in Monday’s late meltdown to Charlotte, 104-99 as 5 ½-point favorites. Memphis covered its first three games of the season prior to a 1-3 ATS mark the last four contests. Since busting the 100-point mark in each of the first two games, the Grizzlies have failed to reach triple-digits in four of the past five contests, while hitting their first OVER of the season in Monday’s setback to the Hornets.

New York Win It

The Knicks (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS) fell into an early 0-3 hole, which included blowout road losses to Oklahoma City and Boston. New York has rebounded nicely by putting together a three-game winning streak, including underdog victories over Cleveland and Denver on a back-to-back set. The Knicks continue a five-game homestand at Madison Square Garden with a suddenly struggling Houston club invading the Big Apple.

The Rockets (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS) have dropped two straight since a 5-1 start, including a surprising 115-107 home setback to the 76ers on Monday as seven-point favorites. Houston allowed Philadelphia to shoot 55% from the floor, compared to 40% for the Rockets, who were led by James Harden’s 29 points in the loss. The Rockets have captured nine of the past 10 matchups with the Knicks since 2012, including five consecutive wins at MSG.

Howl at the Moon

Big things are expected out of Minnesota this season after acquiring Jimmy Butler from Chicago and the recent emergence of Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. The Timberwolves (4-3 SU, 2-4-1 ATS) lost their opener at San Antonio, then won two straight, lost two in a row, but are coming off back-to-back victories over the Thunder and Heat by three points each. Minnesota has gone OVER the total in six of seven games this season, but its defense has been scratched up recently by allowing 113 points or more in five straight games.

The Wolves travel to New Orleans to face a Pelicans (3-4 SU, 4-3 ATS) squad that has seen plenty of ups and downs this season. The Pelicans drilled the Cavaliers as short home underdogs last Saturday, 123-101, but ran out of gas in Monday’s 115-99 setback to the Magic as 7½-point favorites. Last season, the Pelicans owned the Wolves by capturing all three meetings, while the last seven matchups between these teams have sailed OVER the total.

Head-to-Head Matchups

The Bucks hit the road following a 110-91 home defeat to the Thunder on Tuesday as Milwaukee travels to Charlotte to face the Hornets. Milwaukee knocked off Charlotte at home last Tuesday, 103-94 as seven-point favorites, the third consecutive win in the series. The Bucks are 1-0 this season with no rest, while winning five of their last six on the second of a back-to-back since last season.

Atlanta won its season opener at Dallas, but the Hawks haven’t picked up a victory since by losing six straight games. In three of their last four road defeats, Atlanta has been limited to 93 points or less as the Hawks head to Philadelphia. The 76ers have won three of their past four games, but have dropped seven consecutive meetings with the Hawks, including all four last season.

Phoenix continues its road trip after knocking off Brooklyn on Tuesday as the Suns travel to Washington. The Suns have dropped four straight meetings with the Wizards, but covered both matchups last season. Washington returns home following a 2-2 trip out west, but hasn’t cashed yet at Capital One Arena in two victories this season.

Sacramento suffered its fifth straight loss on Tuesday at Indiana as the Kings venture to Boston as double-digit underdogs. The Kings are 0-5 ATS in this stretch, but were 2-0 ATS against the Celtics last season. Boston is going the other way by winning and covering five consecutive games.

The Heat are the only team in the league that has failed to cover a game as they try to turn around their luck tonight against the Bulls. Miami lost two of three matchups with Chicago last season, while the underdog covered in all three meetings.

Toronto continues its six-game road trip in Denver, going for its third straight win. The Raptors captured both matchups with the Nuggets last season by a combined five points, but Denver has covered the last four meetings in the series. Denver is back home following a 2-2 road trip, while going 1-4 ATS the past five games overall.

Both the Clippers and Mavericks have been struggled of late as L.A. has dropped two straight since a 4-0 starts, while Dallas is riding a three-game skid since beating Memphis for its only victory of the season. The Clips and Mavs split four games last season as each team won once at home and once on the road.

NBA Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's Picks and Analysis
Covers.com

Milwaukee Bucks at Charlotte Hornets (-3, 204)

Break out the bug spray because the Hornets are buzzing in Charlotte. The Hornets are 3-1 straight up and against the spread over their last four games with wins over the Nuggets, Magic and, most recently, the Grizzlies at Memphis.

Charlotte is doing all this without a capable backup point guard to give Kemba Walker a blow when needed. Michael Carter-Williams and Julyan Stone are both out indefinitely as is starting wing and secondary ball handler Nic Batum.

The Hornets are on/off court splits for Kemba are crazy, as mentioned by ESPN’s Zach Lowe. Charlotte’s net rating is +17.8 with Walker on the floor and -33 with him on the bench.
Veteran shooting guard Jeremy Lamb is stepping up in Batum’s absence and showing the scoring abilities NBA scouts saw in him during his time at UConn. Lamb is averaging 17.1 points per game and shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Pick: Hornets -3

Indiana Pacers at Cleveland Cavaliers (-11, 215.5)

Should the Cavaliers be double-digits favorites against any team in the league right now? Cleveland is riding a three-game losing streak and is 1-6 against the spread on the season.
This is all happening during arguably the softest portion of the Cavs’ regular season schedule. They’ve lost to the Knicks, Nets and Magic and failed to cover against the Bulls.

The Cavs had a team meeting before Tuesday’s practice to address the early season struggles. Head coach Ty Lue says his player just need to communicate better on the court. We’re not so sure that’s all that needs to be fixed.

Pick: Pacers +11

Yesterday's picks: 1-1
Season record: 15-15

Total Streaks

*The Over is 11-1 in the Pacers’ last 12 road games.
*The Under is 15-5-2 in the Hawks’ last 22 road games.
*The Under is 6-1 in the Rockets’ last seven games.
*The Under is 4-0 in the Raptors’ last four games.
*The Under is 5-1 in the Clippers’ last six games.

Injury to Watch

Memphis Grizzlies All-Star center Marc Gasol is questionable to play Wednesday against the Orlando Magic after injuring his ankle Monday night against the Hornets. Gasol leads the Grizz in scoring and rebounding and he’s the anchor to his team’s defense.

Trends

*The Bucks are 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine games playing on zero days’ rest.
*The 76ers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.
*The Kings are 0-5 ATS in their last five games.
*The Celtics are 5-0 in their last five games overall.

Consensus

The Raptors are the most popular pick amongst players on the Wednesday NBA betting board.
