Atlanta Hawks vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Atlanta Hawks are becoming a frisky team of late, but they are still on the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The Toronto Raptors, who host the Hawks on Tuesday, are at the top of the East and own the best home record in the NBA at 26-5.

Atlanta knocked off one top-eight Eastern Conference team -- the Indiana Pacers -- and then battled the defending champion Golden State Warriors tough in a 114-109 setback before knocking off the Phoenix Suns 113-112 on Sunday to finish off a 2-2 homestand. Taurean Prince knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds left in Sunday's triumph and his development is a big part of the Hawks' plans for the future. The Raptors are not looking too far into the future and are instead focusing on winning a championship this season. Toronto's lone loss in the last 12 games came in overtime and the increasingly well-rounded roster is leading the team to wins even when All-Star guards DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry struggle.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), Sportsnet One (Toronto)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (20-44): Prince went 6-of-8 from 3-point range in Sunday's win and Atlanta knocked down 17-of-33 from beyond the arc. "I thought we got good looks," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. "I thought we moved the ball when we could get good looks. We actually passed up a lot I thought. I thought we for sure could have had more attempts, you don't know whether they'll go in or not, but I'd like to see us shoot more when we're open." Point guards Dennis Schroder and Malcolm Delaney combined to go 5-of-10 from 3-point range and were two of the five players on the roster to knock down multiple 3-point attempts in the win.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (45-17): Toronto struggled a bit in its last two games and held off a late surge to pull out Sunday's 103-98 home win over the Charlotte Hornets. "I would say last year we probably would have lost that game, but we were mature enough to make plays, the right plays," Raptors coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "The dog days of the year right now -- you can't see the end of it." The end of it for Toronto includes 10 more games at home but also two trips to Cleveland and one to Boston.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Raptors SF OG Anunoby (ankle) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

2. Prince is 14-of-25 from 3-point range over the last three games and knocked down multiple 3-pointers in each of the last six contests.

3. Toronto took the first three meetings this season by an average of 20.7 points.

PREDICTION: Raptors 119, Hawks 106

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Charlotte Hornets Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Philadelphia 76ers slipped a bit in their quest to earn homecourt advantage in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a loss at the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday, and the road has generally been a difficult thing to master for the young squad. The 76ers will take another crack at winning away from home when they visit the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.

Philadelphia is one of six teams angling for the No. 3 spot in the East but owns the worst road record of that bunch at 14-18 and will play only six more games away from home after finishing up the current four-game trip. The 76ers, who are winners of 13 straight at home, held a 19-point, third-quarter lead at Milwaukee on Sunday but finished the game with 26 turnovers and ended up falling 118-110. "You see teams just crawl into our chins," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told reporters. "How we react and respond is going to be a key influence to how successful we are." The Hornets know how strong the 76ers are at home and dropped a 110-99 decision at Philadelphia on Friday before finishing off a brutal road trip with a 103-98 setback at East-leading Toronto on Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS Southeast (Charlotte)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (34-28): Philadelphia rookie point guard Ben Simmons recorded six of his team's turnovers on Sunday but also matched a season high and a franchise rookie record with 15 assists. "We just kept turning the ball over," Simmons told reporters. "We got to execute, and we got to take care of the ball." Simmons is locked in a battle for NBA Rookie of the Year honors with Utah's Donovan Mitchell and is averaging 17.3 points on 60.2 percent shooting and 8.9 assists in seven games since the All-Star break.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (28-36): Charlotte had the misfortune of playing the Boston Celtics, 76ers and Raptors in consecutive road games and dropped all three, though the best performance was the last as it pushed the East leaders to the wire in a 103-98 setback. "(In the) fourth quarter it was purpose of play on both ends of the floor," Hornets coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "We had purposeful offense, smart play and very good defense. Like I told them, if we are serious about making a run here, that's what we're capable of." Charlotte is trying to make a run toward a postseason spot and entered play on Monday 5 1/2 games behind eighth-place Miami.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. 76ers SG JJ Redick is 18-of-30 from the field, including 10-of-17 from beyond the arc, over the last three games.

2. Hornets SG Nicolas Batum is averaging 9.4 assists over the last five games, raising his season average to 5.3.

3. Philadelphia won its last trip to Charlotte 105-99 on Feb. 13, 2017.

PREDICTION: 76ers 106, Hornets 104

Miami Heat vs. Washington Wizards Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

6th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Miami Heat look to continue their recent success against Washington when they host the Wizards on Tuesday. Miami has won six of its last seven meetings with the Wizards, including a 91-88 victory on Nov. 17 in its most recent visit to the nation's capital.

The Wizards are aiming to avoid a winless four-game homestand after enduring setbacks against Golden State, Toronto and Indiana. "It's disappointing, but the year is not over," All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal told reporters. "We still got games left. We can still make that run. We've gotta take advantage of our schedule. Tuesday is definitely a must-win for us, that's another hungry team coming in here, so we gotta be ready to go." Miami has won four of its last five games after rolling to a 125-103 home triumph over Phoenix on Monday. The Heat are tied for seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race - just two games behind the Wizards for fifth and five ahead of ninth-place Detroit with 18 contests remaining.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HEAT (34-30): Hassan Whiteside has shot 70 percent while averaging 18 points and 18.5 rebounds in two games against Washington this season, and he tuned up for the latest meeting with a dominating performance versus the Suns. Whiteside was 10-of-13 shooting while recording 24 points, 14 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals in Monday's victory. "He did it all," guard Dwyane Wade told reporters. "I told him I felt this was his best game that I've seen him play, from afar when I wasn't here and since I've been (back) here. It's not going to happen every night, but that Hassan right there is going to allow us to win a lot of games."

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (36-28): Beal was a meager 8-for-27 from the field in Sunday's 98-95 loss to the Pacers and is just 19-for-61 during the team's three-game slide. Beal registered 22 points and a career-best 11 assists against Indiana, but he is carrying nearly all the load with All-Star point guard John Wall (knee) sidelined, and coach Scott Brooks understands there will be some tough moments under the duress of the situation. "We just got to keep looking for good shots, and he's going to continue to put himself in those positions," Brooks told reporters of Beal. "This team's going to continue to trust him and his coach is going to continue to trust him making those decisions and those positions that he's in. He's going to have to keep working through it all."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split two meetings earlier this campaign and will complete the season series Saturday in Miami.

2. Miami SG Wayne Ellington (quadriceps) could miss his fourth straight game.

3. Washington F Kelly Oubre Jr. (left foot) is listed as questionable after sitting out on Sunday.

PREDICTION: Wizards 105, Heat 97

Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Houston Rockets will try to snap a tie for the second-longest winning streak in franchise history when they carry their 15-game run into Oklahoma City for a matchup with the Thunder on Tuesday. A 123-120 win over Boston at home over the weekend tied the Rockets' streak with two others established in both 1992-93 and 1993-94, seven shy of the franchise mark of 22 established in 2007-08.

The win over the Celtics allowed Houston to maintain a slim margin over Golden State for the top spot in the Western Conference and offered another reminder to the Rockets that they will be getting everyone's best shot going down the stretch. "Yeah, every game from here on out is going to be a playoff game, playoff atmosphere, playoff intensity, physicality, everything. So, we're going to treat it like it is," guard James Harden told the media after collecting 26 points and 10 assists. The Thunder are in the middle of an eight-team battle for six spots in the West and they sunk to seventh in the conference after falling 108-100 at Portland on Saturday. They've won five of seven overall but all five wins came against some of the worst teams in the NBA and Oklahoma City has not defeated a winning opponent since Feb. 6.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (49-13): Although it was another high-scoring affair Saturday night, Houston players were proud of the defensive work they did on key possessions down the stretch. "Defensively we are very equipped to get stops," Trevor Ariza - who had a 3-pointer, a steal and a basket in a short span under two minutes - told reporters. "So we have a lot in this locker room." Eric Gordon fueled the offense with 29 points in 27 minutes and he is averaging 25.5 while making 12-of-25 3-pointers over the last two games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (37-28): Russell Westbrook scored 30 points in the loss to Portland but he needed 31 shots to get there and fellow All-Star Paul George missed all seven of his 3-point tries. "We closed well but obviously we didn't make the shots down the stretch," George told reporters. "But I think we got good enough looks. We got within three or four points. A play here or there to go our way and we've got a different ballgame. It just didn't happen that way." Carmelo Anthony was given the night off and returns to the court needing six points to pass Hall of Famer Jerry West (25,192) and move into 20th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Westbrook, George and Anthony combined for 75 points on 28-of-51 shooting in a 112-107 win over Houston at home on Christmas.

2. Rockets PF Ryan Anderson (hip) missed the last three games but is expected to return this week.

3. Westbrook grabbed at least 11 rebounds in seven consecutive contests.

PREDICTION: Rockets 114, Thunder 111

Denver Nuggets vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Denver Nuggets finally found some success on the road to go with their stellar play at home and they look to cap a perfect three-game road trip with a visit to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. The Nuggets began the trip with a 9-19 mark away from home but knocked off Memphis and Cleveland to maintain their hold on the eighth spot in the Western Conference playoff race.

"For us to come in here on a back to back and beat [the Cavaliers], they were doing everything they could to get that win," Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters after the 126-117 win in Cleveland on Saturday. "I couldn't be prouder of our guys. Important win." Gary Harris and Will Barton combined for 55 points while making 10-of-20 3-pointers in the victory for Denver, which entered Monday a half-game ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers but just two games out of third place. The Mavericks are among four teams separated by one game at the bottom of the conference. They were throttled 126-109 by New Orleans in the opener of a four-game homestand on Sunday.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Altitude 2 (Denver), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (35-28): Denver lost its first six road games in 2018 - all to conference opponents - but has since claimed four straight away from the Mile High City. "There's a great belief in our locker room," Malone told the media at Monday's practice while discussing the recent road success. "I love the chemistry. I love the vibe and I love the fact that we're doing it as one, collectively. That's the most important thing about our team right now." The team has thrived on the trip despite the fact that star center Nikola Jokic scored just nine points - nearly eight below his average - in both games while shooting 5-for-13 from the floor.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (19-45): The team's oldest and youngest players - future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and rookie Dennis Smith Jr. - scored 23 points apiece in the loss to the Pelicans. Smith might reach many milestones down the road while Nowitzki continues to climb up several lists and needs just two rebounds to move ahead of Dolph Schayes (11,256) and into 27th place on the NBA's all-time list. The 39-year-old Nowitzki figures to move into third place on the all-time minutes played list and into fifth on the games played list in the next couple of weeks.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Mavericks SG Wesley Matthews (hip) missed Sunday's game and is questionable for this one.

2. Barton is averaging 22.8 points while shooting 59 percent over the last four games.

3. The home team won each of the first three meetings.

PREDICTION: Nuggets 109, Mavericks 103

New York Knicks vs. Portland Trail Blazers Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

6th March 2018 by Gracenote
Damian Lillard has been on a roll over the past 3 1/2 weeks and his latest scoring binge extended the Portland Trail Blazers' season-best winning streak to seven games. The All-Star point guard aims to lead Portland to a victory over the sinking New York Knicks on Tuesday, one night after scoring 19 fourth-quarter points to rally his team past the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lillard scored 39 points in Monday's 108-103 road triumph as Portland recovered from an 11-point, fourth quarter deficit with less than seven minutes to play - reaching 35 or more points for the sixth time in the past nine games. "I had some bonehead plays in the third - a couple turnovers, missed some free throws," Lillard said in a postgame television interview. "I had a lot of bad plays over the course of the game but it is all about closing it out and finding ways to get it done." New York is sliding in the wrong direction with four consecutive setbacks and 12 in the past 13 games. Coach Jeff Hornacek was highly disappointed with the effort in Sunday's 102-99 loss to the Sacramento Kings in a contest in which his team trailed by 19 points early in the fourth quarter before trimming the margin.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (24-40): Hornacek was a gritty player during a 14-year NBA career and he doesn't have a high tolerance level for performances that he views as below par or lacking pride. "Some of the guys think they're playing hard," Hornacek told reporters after Sunday's loss. "I'm sure the guys are saying, 'I'm playing as hard as I can.' There's playing hard and playing with desperation and doing what it takes to win. That's an internal thing. If you want to be in this league and be great, that's what you have to do and not just do it when you're down 15 points." The team's recent collapse - partially due to a knee injury to All-Star forward Kristaps Porzingis - also has raised questions about whether or not Hornacek will be invited back for a third season with the Knicks.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (38-26): Lillard is averaging 35.2 points during his nine-game run and his scoring spree has helped Portland ascend to third place in the Western Conference playoff race as well as reach a season-best 12 games over .500. The Trail Blazers can improve their positioning during a stretch in which seven of eight games are at home, beginning with the contest against the Knicks. The performance of center Jusuf Nurkic fluctuates, but he was solid against the Lakers by recording 16 points and 16 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the campaign.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lillard scored 32 points as the Trail Blazers defeated the Knicks 103-91 in New York on Nov. 27.

2. Portland SF Maurice Harkless (left knee) is questionable after missing the past two games.

3. New York SG Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 24 points against the Kings and is averaging 22 over the past six games.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 119, Knicks 98

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Los Angeles Clippers Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The last time the New Orleans Pelicans faced the Los Angeles Clippers they had the look of a defeated team, having just lost star forward DeMarcus Cousins for the season and beginning a stretch in which they would lose five of six games. The Pelicans head to Los Angeles for Tuesday's rematch under very different circumstances and hope to continue their longest winning streak in over seven years.

Their eight-game run has vaulted Alvin Gentry's team into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference entering Monday. "I just think the guys are playing with a lot of confidence. They're playing for each other," Gentry told reporters after a 126-109 win in Dallas on Sunday. "We're grinding and scrapping and doing the things you have to to try and win, especially when you're in the West." The Clippers are in ninth place in the West but only two games behind New Orleans as their offense continues to click. Austin Rivers scored 27 points in a 123-120 win over Brooklyn on Sunday, the sixth time in the last seven games that Los Angeles has produced at least 122 points.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (36-26): While Anthony Davis has thrust himself into the MVP debate with a torrid stretch, Jrue Holiday's improved play has been just as important during New Orleans' surge. "To me, Jrue is probably if not the best two-way player we have in our game," teammate Rajon Rondo told the media. "One through four, he can check those guys. I think people are starting to see what he's doing just because of this win streak, but he's been doing it his whole career." Holiday scored 30 points at Dallas and is averaging 25.9 points on 55 percent shooting during the winning streak.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (34-28): Rivers scored 14 of his 27 points in a wild fourth quarter against the Nets and made the go-ahead 3-pointer in the waning moments as Los Angeles rallied from eight points down in the last three minutes. "It just seemed like we had a lot of moments where we could have just given up in that game," Rivers said. Tobias Harris added 26 points and he is averaging 19 points on 48.3 percent shooting in 12 games since being traded from Detroit.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Davis collected a double-double in each game of the winning streak and averages 34.8 points and 15.2 rebounds since the All-Star break.

2. Clippers SG Lou Williams scored 21 points in back-to-back games despite shooting 1-of-12 from 3-point range in that span.

3. Los Angeles claimed each of the last eight matchups against New Orleans at home.

PREDICTION: Clippers 119, Pelicans 117

Brooklyn Nets vs. Golden State Warriors Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018

5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Golden State Warriors have not lost since returning from the All-Star break and will try to run the winning streak to six straight and reach 50 wins when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. The Warriors got the weekend off after finishing off a sweep of a three-game east coast trip with a 114-109 win at Atlanta on Friday.

Golden State is battling the red-hot Houston Rockets for the top spot in the Western Conference and will play 10 of its remaining 19 games, including the next two, at home while making only one more stop at an Eastern Conference opponent -- Indiana on April 5. The Warriors struggled a bit more than anticipated at East-worst Atlanta on Friday but managed to grab the win as Nick Young stepped up with 16 points off the bench to help out an injured Stephen Curry. The Nets dropped the first three of a five-game trip but were competitive in each of the three, falling at Cleveland, Sacramento and the Los Angeles Clippers by an average of 4.7 points. "Yeah, very discouraging," Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters after the 123-120 loss to the Clippers on Sunday. "We couldn't make the plays to put it away. They say the hardest thing in professional sports is to close out a game. That's where we're at right now with our ability to close it out. We're not there yet."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE NETS (20-44): Brooklyn guard D'Angelo Russell totaled 40 points on the first two games of the road trip but was limited to six on 1-of-6 shooting in 20 minutes on Sunday. Russell's missing playing time went to reserve guard Caris LeVert, who responded with 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting in 29 minutes. "Caris was great," Atkinson told reporters of going with LeVert over Russell. "That's it. There was no way with the game he was having. There's only so many spots out there. We felt like we had to go with Caris."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (49-14): Curry, who has a lengthy history of ankle issues, rolled his left ankle after landing on the foot of teammate Zaza Pachulia in the first half on Friday. Curry came back into the game in the second quarter and briefly in the third before taking the rest of the night off but does not seem concerned about the injury. "I came back in the second (quarter), felt pretty good," Curry, who is expected to play Tuesday, told reporters. "It got a little stiff at halftime. I didn't think I would have to sit out coming into the third quarter, but sometimes the power of (team trainer) Chelsea (Lane) and coach (Steve) Kerr wins out, and we just want to be precautionary and safe."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors SF Kevin Durant shot 61.2 percent from the floor during the three-game road trip.

2. The Nets' starting backcourt of Spencer Dinwiddie, Russell and Allen Crabbe combined to go 3-of-23 from the floor on Sunday.

3. Curry collected 39 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a 118-111 win at Brooklyn on Nov. 19.

PREDICTION: Warriors 125, Nets 110
